Sad for everyone that it ended this way even though the end was evident quite a while ago. I'm glad that the University took a flier and gave Patrick a shot. Was he the best candidate after and extensive search? Clearly not. But, he loves his alma mater and he had put in a lot of work as an assistant and was one of the top 2 people/reasons Georgetown basketball was ever a national thing. I really wish it had worked out but it really didn't as we've all seen. I've seen posts akin to, "Patrick should be fired and banned from stepping on campus." To those with that mindset I'd only ask, what have you ever done for the University that anyone would give a rip about?
Failed coaching experiment considered, Patrick will forever be a consummate Hoya. He proved to be an awful coach. But, he also never gave up. Should he have? Maybe. But, have you ever known a highly successful professional athlete that stopped trying to win? I'm not trying to apologize for the man. I'm only saying that part of the reason people have so much anger toward him is the same part that made him great as a player. He was told a lot of things as a young man while playing. Hell, there were signs hung while he played. His response was to shut people up by winning. He didn't win as a coach. There are far worse transgressions.
The W/L and player transfers will be what they were and it'll all reflect poorly on Patrick wherever he goes from a coaching standpoint. I hope that, prior to taking the HC job, Patrick considered what his life would be professionally if it went south and went south badly. I have no doubt that Patrick gave it his all. But, if it's not something you're going to ever excel at, the effort can seem as though it was for nothing. Patrick tried, for a second time, to make Georgetown basketball, a national brand. He failed once. But, no one would have ever cared if he hadn't succeeded so brilliantly the first time. I firmly believe that he had to be let go and I firmly believe that it was a season too late. But, I also admire his want to and his willingness to fail. He never needed to do any of it. Both Patrick and the program are worse off for the shot. But, I'm glad that both parties can part ways saying that they tried and failed and move on from there. When big swings don't hit, they usually make for ugly misses (if you're old enough, picture Dave Winfield screwing himself into the ground). Bittersweet day. Hoya Saxa.

Where do you get Pitino as “win at any cost”? So Louisville was not great but he was judged not responsible, and where else has he had issues? GTown’a last coach had personal sexual issues and could not graduate anybody. Is that suckitude at any cost? See Hawaii 1976. See Porcini Restaurant 2003. Add on Louisville 2017 which you already mentioned, and dont forget Louisville 2010-2014. Quite a storied history for the next Hoya savior.

The facts around the Hawaii situation aren’t clear but among the things Pitino was faulted for was giving kids vouchers to eat at McDonalds. In other words, things that nowadays can easily be done legally via NIL, stipends, etc. Regarding Porcini, Google Ewing’s own stripper problems at the Gold Club (and I believe he was married at the time too). With Louisville, he wasn’t found to be directly aware of or involved in the problems. And yes, Pitino has baggage. That’s the only reason he’s available to Georgetown.

Sheesh, who knew Ewingectomies were so painful!
Patrick, I love you, all the best in the future!
To the next coach, whoever you may be, I hope you run a discernible offense! And, uh, defense! Throw in an identifiable substitution pattern and maybe a plan or two to inbound the ball and get it across half court against pressure, and, well, I would really like that!

Kevin Ollie got a raw deal and ended winning the lawsuit for wrongful termination against UConn Kevin Ollie ended being hurt by all that early success at UConn including the National Championship. But the man can coach and is light years ahead of what we got out of Patrick Ewing. where did this name come from? the guy can coach, though. Just someone who is still out there. Relatively still young for a coach and has a Final 4 and a National Championship on his resume. $4 million per year should be able to get him.

Just relieved. Time to move on. Quite frankly, I believe Ewing is relieved.Naw, Patrickk Ewing wanted to come back and will miss that $4 million per year paycheck. He is going to sit home and do what now?? He is going to miss being at the university, the players and coaching the sidelines during games There is nothing else like it.

Thanks Coach Ewing. You love your school. You tried your best. It didn't work out.
The highlight was winning the Big East tournament title. That was a cool moment. Moving forward, it is time for new blood. Let's get a young (or relatively young) up-and-coming coach with head coaching experience. A leader with attention to detail, especially on the defensive end. Shooting the 3 and defending the 3. That is today's game. Get some assistants that have recruiting ties to B-more, PG county/DC and Northern VA areas. Someone who understands the current college landscape of recruiting and what a student-athlete of today means. The old guard is being phased out (Boeheim, K, Williams, Jay Wright) for a reason. With all due respect to you. Patrick Ewing has left this program in shambles Tried his best...Patrick Ewing stopped having practices getting paid $4 million per year Where I am from not practicing is no where close to trying your best to win. It's like taking a test without studying for it.

As the resurrection of GU basketball is at least a 2 if not 3 step process, we have completed the necessary Ewingectomy.
Now the harder more metastasized, more lethal problem must be handled with a radical Thompsonectomy.
If that requires amputating a 40 year tumor from 2nd Healy, so be it.

Yes, Pitino has baggage. Every conceivable candidate has an issue of some sort, whether it be past issues or winning issues or both. But we are competing against schools willing to take calculated risks to be great. Pitino’s very realistic upside is something like Kelvin Sampson’s performance at Houston. (Sampson had similar issues but has been clean at UH). Nobody else offers that level of upside or that level of certainty of success.

This is, um, one way to react to this news. Trust me,I am glad that he is finished as the head coach. My life isn't going to be any better by dumping on the man.

I hear you, but deep down I believe Patrick knew the college game was not for him. Ewing is a great guy, but I don’t see him as a master motivator, a player development kind of coach. There is no way of telling, of course. However, if after 6 years, this did not become apparent to him, then something is wrong, he would be clearly missing the obvious. And mind you, I like Ewing. His commitment to, and play at Georgetown, his Caribbean roots—along with the charismatic giant of a coach, John Thompson is what got me hooked on Georgetown. I wish him well.

Having gotten lured into the conversation, let me just say I don’t think Rick Pitino is our guy, either. Have nothing against the man; watched him for many years as a coach; and yes, he is a great coach! I would love to see him hired at Georgetown in some other role, just not as the head coach. We need someone young and upcoming as the partial face of the program.

Ewing doesn’t get into Georgetown if it wasn’t for Big John. Same with Iverson. Georgetown isn’t as squeaky clean as you think. There’s people who don’t want Pitino no where near Georgetown Basketball program. I believe Jack and Reed don’t want that baggage to enter Thompson Center. Maybe they should just hire Michael Gaughan
