It’s sad that the contest was my basketball watching highlight of the past 2 years. From the brevity of this thread , looks like few here even had this minor pleasure. Guess the next highlight comes with Pats retirement ( with full pay) after we lose in first rd of the BET.

Somewhere Akinjo’s just a little jealous 🤪 Hopefully, Akinjo is somewhere working really hard on his game to make a NBA team in the near future.

SALT LAKE CITY — A slam dunk contest without any stars. A three-point contest without Stephen Curry, the greatest shooter ever. A skills challenge without headliner Giannis Antetokounmpo, sidelined with a last-minute wrist injury. Despite that collision of adverse circumstances and notable absences, the NBA’s All-Star Saturday slate sent the Vivint Arena crowd home happy thanks to a memorable dunk contest showing by fan favorite Mac McClung and a three-point contest victory by Damian Lillard, who went to college in nearby Ogden. McClung, a highflying 6-foot-2 guard who had spent this season with the G League’s Delaware Blue Coats before signing a two-way contract with the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday, earned three perfect 50 dunks to claim the newly christened Julius Erving Trophy. The 24-year-old, a former standout at Georgetown and a native of Gate City, Va., beat New Orleans Pelicans forward Trey Murphy III in the final round with back-to-back perfect scores, earning top marks from the judges and appreciative cheers from the crowd for smoothly executing each of his attempts. www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2023/02/18/nba-slam-dunk-contest-highlights-results/

I really want to see a program that roots for kids like Crouch does, not an extremely petty one that keeps a kid stapled to the bench in their home state in front of their friends and family or refuses to hang a NBA jersey.

Crouch is part of the Georgetown program. He absolutely is - and I want a Georgetown program that is more like him and can demonstrate some heart rather than Pat or Ronny. If you want to know why people continually push Pitino or Cooley, it is not just the wins. It's stuff like this.

Pat was clearly too busy to watch the contest. He is game planning for that great Butler team we face today.

Good for Mac - he managed to succeed on a stage many said (or hoped) he would not get.
Echoing AltoSaxa, we could stand to tone down the post-on-poster rhetoric here a tough.

Somewhere Akinjo’s just a little jealous 🤪 Hopefully, Akinjo is somewhere working really hard on his game to make a NBA team in the near future. James is with the Westchester Knicks in the G League. He had a good start to the season during the Showcase Cup portion of the G League where he finished 2nd in assists and also averaged a decent amount of points. During the regular season the team waived their previous backup PG Tra Holder and signed a guy named Obadiah Noel... Noel eventually replaced Akinjo in the starting lineup despite the fact James was still playing pretty good during the regular season. James still gets a lot of minutes off the bench though. As for him and Mac, they have already had 2 head to head matchups. Both were underwhelming performances from both guys. I would say Mac got the better of him, but not by much, as Mac played bad... Akinjo just played worse. They really didn't guard each other much for whatever reason, and when they did there really wasn't anything extra going on. After the first game, they shook hands and hugged for whatever that's worth. James actually seemed to go a lot harder in his matchup with Sharife Cooper who he had to backup in Summer League... those two genuinely seemed to not like each other and they had a great battle... James played very well but Cooper got the better of him. Mac did get this 360 layup off a bad Akinjo pass

As the first player from the NBA’s developmental G League to participate in the All-Star Game slam dunk contest, Mac McClung is appreciative of the opportunities that come from being known as a viral dunker. But as he graciously sits through interview after interview as he is peppered with questions about his highlight-reel days in Gate City, a small town in southwest Virginia, McClung can’t help but feel pigeonholed. In the same vein as a boy band that’s looking to change its sound but is constantly reminded of its origin in bubble gum pop, McClung has spent the past six or so years trying to prove his abilities on the hardwood extend far beyond the dunking clips that put Gate City High on the map. www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2023/02/20/mac-mcclung-nba-career/
