I took zero pride last year in having called the big doughnut of a season fairly early in January. It just appeared obvious to me - too many one dimensional players, no team concept, very little basketball intelligence, nothing to instill confidence.
A new season, almost an entirely new roster - and nothing has changed. The same one skill players. Selfish, sloppy play. No basketball sense.
I think we slop out an ugly win somehow and somewhere. But I have no confidence that we can do it twice.
I have lived and died with the Hoyas for 43 years. I do desperately want them to be winners
I just know they won't.

I think we get at least 5 wins in the conference. The Big East is very down - I think there are really only 2-3 good teams (Creighton, UCONN, maybe Xavier). It won’t mean we’re better than last year, it will just mean the conference is worse.

In the five years starting with 2008-09, DePaul in-conference went 0-18, 1-17, 1-17, 3-15 and 2-16, playing desultory games with a certain air of futility/inevitability in front of moribund "crowds" announced at an average of about 3000 per game in a cavernous (feeling) off campus arena. It didn't seem like THAT long before (though it sorta was) that in December 1984 Depaul had played the Hoyas in a #2 vs. #1 nationally televised TV game at the Capital Center, won going away by the Ewing-lead Hoyas. This was one of the games that NJhoya78 (see earlier thread) traveled South to attend in person. For some reason I thought about all this earlier on my way back from today's game.

As bad as Ewing is, the talent on this team is better than several Big East teams I’ve seen this season. The conference overall is pretty bad, I think we beat teams like Providence, St. John’s, Butler, and DePaul at least once.

The conference overall is pretty bad, I think we beat teams like Providence, St. John’s, Butler, and DePaul at least once. It's just hard to imagine them putting together 40 full minutes of remotely competent basketball. they have (I think) led at the half of every game. But the complete collapse in the second half in all but the Green Bay game is remarkable. You can feel it coming the minute the opponent scores a few times in a row. They panic, go into hero ball mode, and this feeds the opponent's confidence. It all snowballs quickly, and the collapse is on. And this is against bad/mediocre teams. The BE is not particularly strong this year. But even the weaker teams seem psychologically strong enough not to fall apart at the first sniff of adversity. Until they demonstrate that they can play two good halves of basketball in the same game, I'm going to have a hard time believing they can beat any BE team- despite the increased talent level compared to last season.

Its just part of his setup. Each team we are about to play is the worst team that ever played basketball in the history of the game. The Big East is very down. That way he can dramatize even more the magnitude of our failures. I'm not sure that strategy is really necessary anymore! But I'm always surprised people fall for it.

Anything under 4 BE wins should be considered a disaster. 9 new players, more talent, new assistant coaches ….same terrible results.

It’s not that Ewing is the worst coach in Big East history, it’s that my bar of 5 Big East wins (which I took the over on) is too high. Good job by you, JohnnyJones, for pointing this out to the rest of the board. Keep patting yourself on the back for attending Big East Tournaments, though. You’re obviously a much better fan that the rest of us. Hopefully I can be more like you someday and extol the virtues of Ronny Thompson and Pat Ewing.

I am guessing he is certainly a much more invested fan than you. I am extremely confident of that. I assume you understand that there are lots of levels of Fandom. Please stop assuming that there is only one absolute way to move forward. Most of us don't disagree with you but when you offer nothing else - ever- it really becomes tiresome. Stop speaking for the entire fan base.
Again - I agree with a lot of your sentiment. Please appreciate that lots of folks - like those who graduated earlier than 1992 like I did - are also invested.

It's super weird to me that after an offseason of being attacked for being too negative that someone's motives come into question for statements that the team might be mildly awful rather than exceptionally awful. I'm not sure I'd bet on above 5 wins but I'd bet on above 1. Regression to the mean is a thing, and as bad a coach as Patrick Ewing is, Wahab has been an efficiency monster this year, and the problem seems like usage. This team isn't going to win 10, but if you cut Murray and Spears' minutes to 28 and involve Anglin and Riley more why would 5 be off the table?

Anything under 4 BE wins should be considered a disaster. 9 new players, more talent, new assistant coaches ….same terrible results. This is what the current regime had reduced us to. Under 4 wins is a disaster? That sentence is the disaster. The bar has been so lowered that someone wrote that.

Anything under 4 BE wins should be considered a disaster. 9 new players, more talent, new assistant coaches ….same terrible results. So 5 wins is not a disaster? 5-15 for a combined 5-35 in the last two seasons is not an absolute dumpster fire?

Some would color 4 wins as progress and call it a step in the right direction. My guess is that the administration would try to spin it that way. It’s sad to say the least.

If you don't pay attention you'll miss it but he will say things to make it look worse if they don't come true. He'll talk about Flowers being a GTown lock so when he goes to WVU it appears that Ewing lost the kid. Or in this case even the terrible Ewing will get 5Ws in this BE but no one watching thanks this GTown team is winning 5 gms. I see maybe 2. Butler and DePaul.....Boya just wants to make sure that no one screams progress after 3Ws 🤷🏾♂️
