I am saying 8-2 out of conference and 12-4 in conference for a 20-6 record. On the out of conference side, I am guessing we will beat either the Illini or Duke, and we will drop a second game to either Oregon or UTEP.
On the conference side, I am guessing we drop the first two coupled with a potential loss to a school like WVU or ND plus one game you would expect us to win like one of the St.John's games or something like that. What does everybody else got?

Out Of Conference:
@ Illinois - L Duke - L @ Sun Bowl (Colgate) - W @ Sun Bowl (UTEP) - W Vanderbilt - W @ Oregon - L @ Michigan - W Fairfield - W @ Navy - W @ James Madison - W
Big East:
@ UConn - L @ 'Nova - L Syracuse - W Cincinnati - W @ West Virginia - L West Virginia - W Pittsburgh - W @ DePaul - W @ Notre Dame - L @ Marquette - W Providence - W Rutgers - W @ St. Johns - L St. Johns - W @ South Florida - W South Florida - W
That makes us 7-3 OOC (with the loses coming against our premier opponents) and 11-5 in BE play (we ALWAYS lose in The Garden, NEVER play that well in South Bend, and I don't think WVU is going to be THAT bad... time will tell). Heading into the BET, I don't think 18-8 is an unreasonable number. But I wouldn't be surprised if we dropped one to, say, Cincy or 'Cuse (even though without Warrick that team will be bunk) to have us at 17-9.
Oh yeah... I also wouldn't be surprised if we won IN Illinois. I'm not sure their reserves are going to be able to fill in that well for the losses of Powell Jr, Head, Williams and even that monster Ingram guy at center.
So I'd say a floor of 18-8 (17-9 if guys don't improve like we hope and think they should) and a ceiling of 20-6 (if things go our way and we get a break or two... a la Roy wide open for a dunk against ND).

Too early for predictions from me. But I like the Hoyas' chances against Illinois.

Things to consider for the Hoyas' opponents:
1) Does Illinois have ANYONE to step in for Williams, Head, Powell Jr.? 2) What is going to happen to the You Con players who are either being investigated or have serious health issues? 3) Who is SUcks going to put out as their starting five? Who is still going to be on the squad come October? 4) Can the Duke freshman make the contributions needed to keep them atop the ACC? 5) Is it possible for WVU to keep that magic streak going? 6) How will ND fare without Thomas, Cornette and Latimore? 7) How improved will SJU be? 8) Can Louisville make up for the losses of Garcia, Myles and O'Bannon? 9) How's Cincy going to be without Maxiell? 10) DePaul and Marquette - anybody know anything about 'em?

1) Nik Smith, Richard McBride and someone else. Not complete scrubs, but nowhere near last year's talent.
2) They'll get off, maybe serve a one game suspension.
3) McNamara, Roberts, Watkins and two of Devendorf, Wright and McCroskey. Every single player there is a Top 75 player, I think. But I haven't been overly impressed by most of them.
4) Yes. The ACC is weak this year. But we can beat them, provided the refs call it even. Redick is good but hardly unstoppable, and we can handle Williams if the fouls don't pile up. I guess the wildcard is McRoberts. If he's as good as stated, we'll need Roy to step up versus Shelden so Jeff and Brandon can contain McRoberts.
5) Not really. But that was the one game last year where you could honestly say the officials gave us one. And they weren't hot then. The Big East is chock full o' parity and playing in Morgantown sucks.
6) Losing a senior PG is always tougher than people think -- call it the Kevin Braswell syndrome. But they have a very good class coming in, and Quinn is a good player. I'd say the Braswell theory trumps the misnamed Ewing Theory, but their talent level won't be much different than ours.
7) I'm waiting for a sophomore slump. Lots of teams overperform for a first year coach by playing hard. SJU is one of those. Hill and Hamilton are legit talents, but somebody has to lose, right?
8) They won't. Palacios may step up, but I think this year is all on Dean. Their fans are crazy -- saying this team is better. It isn't. I wouldn't be shocked to see them miss the NCAAs or to see Dean and Palacios carry them to a Sweet 16.
9) Better than expected. They have a veteran squad, a super frosh that fits into their needs perfectly, and are physical enough for the BE. They'll start 3 seniors with a ton of experience.
10) Marquette is basically a new team except for Steve Novak, their Pittsnogle with less toughness. But they have a FANTASTIC class coming in -- three Top 100 guards including PG Dominic James. But we'll beat them like a drum down low, and I think they'll struggle this year unless James is otherwordly.
DePaul has Sammy Mejia and a bunch of other New Yorkers, so they'll more of less play like a streetball team, shooting poorly, but making fantastic plays. They ave a PG in Cliff Clinkscales who couldn't make a shot last year. Their best player from last year was Quemont Greer, and he'll be replaced by freshman Wilson Chandler. Wesley Wilson-alike Wes Green returns to their squad after leaving for personal reasons.

No problem predicting Hoyas will win all their games and win the NCAAs after dedicating their season to Esherick.

As for Illinois, Nick Smith actually graduated as well. The returning Dee Brown and James Augustine will undoubtedly be starters. The other 3 spots will likely be filled by some combination of Calvin Brock, Brian Randle, Warren Carter, Shaun Pruitt, and Richard McBride. All except for Carter are Illinois kids. Carter is a kid from Texas. None of the 5 has really proven much to date because they have been stuck behind the top 7 from last season - which doesnt tell us much except they fall in somewhere behind a group of kids who were No. 1 most of last season. Brock is a point guard; McBride, Carter and Randle are swingmen; Pruitt is a post player who is still developing. Brock and Randle are also coming off injuries, I believe. As for DePaul and Marquette, I should know more about them but I dont.

For Luisville, Palacios has a nasty ankle injury...and will be out for 3-6 months. That's going to hinder his season.

You guys know me- the eternal optimist- but don't be surprised if we struggle out of the gate a bit. It's a tough schedule with a ton of roadies. Later on, when the returnees focus in and the new guys get their legs under them in the system, we'll see more results in the W column.
A 20-12 record with this schedule might nail us a 6 seed in the tourney.

think we may be getting a bit ahead of ourselves here (yet again).
fact is we have a ridiculously difficult ooc schedule and the conference is tough. unless someone develops a consistent outside shot, a pg who can penetrate and breakdown a defense, and a big man who can score, i think we are in for an up and down year and making the ncaa will be close yet again.
but having confidence in jtiii, i think maybe he knows something, that the team will be vastly better than last year. otherwise the schedule hes put together is suicide.

Even though it is tough, everyone is assuming we are going to lose every big name away OOC. I just don't see that happening and I think we will beat a couple of them.

Oregon is really the only away game I am having trouble seeing us win. It is just a horrible place to play and while I think our teams have comparable talent, the HC advantage they will have will be quite a bit. I am not saying we will win the others, just that I can see us having winning a bit easier even at Illinois.

Illinois lost a lot from last year, but they should still be tough, and Michigan could be very tough as well. UTEP also is no walk-over.
