Some thoughts ahead of tonight's matchup:
- There are a few things that vividly stick out from the first game: 1. Our pick and roll coverage on Kolek was awful, we made him look like an All BE player. 2. Their front court athleticism between Kuath, Prosper, Lewis, Ighodaro overwhelmed us. 3. Every bad shot / turnover will result in a fastbreak the other way.
- That being said, Marquette has lost three of four. Of course the win was against Nova, losses @ UConn and @ Providence aren't really worth dwelling on...but losing @ Butler last game? That one definitely raised some eyebrows. In particular, their defense has slowed down the last few games. I didn't get to watch that game but they didn't force a ton of turnovers against Butler. Wonder if they're slowing down a bit or if people are adjusting to their pressure defense better.
- I know people are clamoring for Beard, this feels like a really difficult ask against their ball pressure. Something has to change with Dante's game, there's things we need him for but he has to be willing to turn down long 2s early and probe the defense for a better shot
- Justin Lewis is starting to garner some BE POY buzz, although it feels like it's Gillespie's to lose, especially after his performance last night. I said this last time but I'm kinda fascinated by the Lewis vs. Holloway matchup. Lewis is clearly more advanced but I think Holloway has to look at Lewis' projection and ask himself can he get his game to look a little more like that. Lewis got leaner, stronger, a little more mobile, and more comfortable on the perimeter. Holloway has crafty post moves but his possessions where he has to put the ball on the floor from the perimeter have been tough. Hopefully he watches Lewis closely
- I'm fine playing Mutombo, but I think we need to start talking about the defensive rebounding. Defensive rebounding rates: Ighoefe: 23%, Wilson: 18%, Mutombo: 14%. Ryan is actually more likely to grab an offensive rebound than a defensive rebound. Ewing clearly benched him after Kalkbrenner got 3 straight offensive rebounds on Saturday then didn't play him Monday. That seems like an over-reaction but clearly it's what Ewing needs from him to play more
This screams like a get right game for Marquette and our 3rd game in 5 days. Hopefully I'm wrong. Hoya Saxa

If you are rooting for Ewing to retain his job, each of these remaining games are becoming must wins.

Every remaining game probably requires some sort of complete abandoning of the current strategy in order to have even a remote chance of being competitive. It's like in the NFL when the vastly less talented team has to resort to surprise onside kicks, trick plays, etc. to gain advantages because they know their Plan A just isn't going to work against the opponent's Plan A.
I've accepted losing at this point for this season, but pleading for any kind of wholesale adjustment just for the sake of showing something different. We caught McD off guard by going small on Monday; even he openly acknowledged this. If it's pressing after every make for 40 minutes, go for it. If it's switching zone vs. man at every TV timeout, do that. If it's going to small and switching everything, mismatches be damned, do that. Honestly, if it's having Rice jack 15-18 3's like Hawkins did on Saturday, do that too. I'd even be fine with Aminu jacking up some more 3s even if lightly contested. Just no more vanilla PnR defense. No more 20+ shot attempts for Dante. No more sitting and back and watching the opponent carve us up in the halfcourt because we haven't made a single defensive adjustment for the entire game.
Realize we have limited options and we are likely unprepared to employ alternatives, but there's no harm in trying at this point.

I wasn't sure where to put this but whatever happened to the Howard transfer Bristol? Can we assume he is not going to play for us this year and in effect is redshirting?

My understanding is that he has 3 full years of eligibilty. He has been sitting on the bench at home games.

To dream the impossible dream... An offensive groove.
Dante, Coach knows it, you know it, I know it. Some people don't know it, but they don't know lots of other obvious things. It is all you, my man. You know what to do. This team is at it's best when you are doing your thing. By all means, drive and dish and swing the ball and don't forget to "MOVE!", of course. But you have to shoot, and you have to hit. Free the other guys to play their best ball by playing your best ball.
Gonna have to sizzle from the field, to help both limit their inside advantage and allow for some press. Marquette might be able to handle it, maybe just try and pressure the inbound pass then pull back. If we could dictate the flow a bit, we could compete with these guys. It all starts with putting the ball in the basket.
LETS GO HOYAS!!!!

Too many games in not enough nights. They played last Saturday and are coming off a loss. I don’t think that this one can be judged too harshly, but we’re gonna win anyway.

We definitely need Dante to keep looking to get scoring opportunities. He's gotta keep driving and keep looking for the mid range shots. When he doesn't have the shot, he's got to get it to the open man while driving to the basket.

Our post play is just not good. Our bigs are not polished yet and do not box out or go up strong. Just have not seen much progress in the position.
