Four-star shooting guard Deshawn Harris-Smith had a very productive night on day one of the National High School Hoopsfest. Harris-Smith is a very tough lefty who excels at finishing through contact, defending, and playing with a high motor providing energy to his team. As of right now Smith is ranked No. 86 in the 2023 national rankings and has taken two visits to Georgetown, visits to Penn State, Rutgers, and Villanova, while planning to visit North Carolina State in the near future. Georgetown: “Georgetown shows a lot of love. I speak with Coach Ewing and coach Crouch almost every day so they're building a relationship with me, im building a relationship with them and they speak to my mom and dad, so they're just showing a lot of love right now and I really appreciate that.” “They have a NBA legend as a coach with a lot of connections and can get people to the next level. They run a lot of NBA stuff out there so why not play for them.” 247sports.com/college/basketball/recruiting/Article/Basketball-recruiting-Deshawn-Harris-Smith-Rutgers-Penn-State-Rutgers-Villanova-177368705/

Harris-Smith played mainly on the ball for Fairfax (Va.) Paul VI this weekend. We have known the 6-foot-5 strong-bodied junior was a Swiss Army knife type wing, but these initiation skills opened our eyes. Defensively, Harris-Smith guarded multiple positions as he averaged three steals through his two games. He showed range going 3-5 from beyond the arc while grabbing 7.5 rebounds and four assists per game. Currently ranked No. 69 in the updated 2023 Rivals150, Harris-Smith has taken unofficial visits to Penn State, Villanova (no offer), and Georgetown. He is setting up a visit to NC State soon, where he is hoping to earn an offer. basketballrecruiting.rivals.com/news/shaw-s-takeaways-national-high-school-hoops-festival

Georgetown: "I know Patrick Ewing is one of the greats, an NBA legend. They are doing a lot of NBA stuff, getting players ready for the next level. They show a lot of love, talking about staying home and everything. I like what they're saying." More on his recruitment: "I feel like Villanova is the main school (that) talks to me a lot but hasn't offered. ... Hopefully, that offer will come soon. I am supposed to go to NC State soon, so trying to set a visit up with them. They haven't offered yet, but they're talking to me a good bit. I want to go somewhere with a coach like coach (Glenn) Farello - Paul VI head coach - who cares about me on and off the court. Someone who will go through adversity with me, so they just don't go looking for someone else when I am not playing my best. The culture is big, too; I want to be a winner. I have always been a winner." basketballrecruiting.rivals.com/news/deshawn-harris-smith-keeps-improving-mulling-offers

2023 DeShawn Harris-Smith, Paul VI (D.C.) DMV native Josh Reaves was on a loaded Oak Hill team in 2015 and fellow DMV native Harris-Smith has that kind of vibe to his game. Fans will love his athleticism, coaches love how much he’s improved his decision making and perimeter jumper. He’s now a three-level scorer and the nation’s top programs are taking notice. Villanova offered two weeks ago and they won’t be the last. He’ll end up with Blue Bloods hitting his line. www.ozarkssportszone.com/2022/01/09/2022-bass-pro-tournament-of-champions-players-to-watch/

Deshawn Harris-Smith, Paul VI
After a dominant first day from Paul VI, Deshawn Harris Smith emerged as one of the top point guards from day one. Harris-Smith still scored the ball through mostly drives to the rim where he used his body extremely well to power himself through contact and finish but what really stood out was his ability and willingness to get his teammates involved. Harris-Smith was one of the prospects to make a big leap in the latest rankings release and looks to be a very solid piece to the high major program he chooses.
Xavier head coach Sean Miller, Penn State head coach Micah Shrewsberry, Villanova assitant coach, and coaches from Maryland were among some of the schools court side for Harris-Smith. Harris-Smith recently took an official visit to Xavier, and plans on taking visits to both Penn State and Maryland.

Xavier: “l really connected with coach Sean Miller on the visit. He talked about me coming in and getting a starting role, being a big part of the team if I were to come there. His goal would be for me to try and get Big East Freshman of the Year. It was just a lot of great things about my future there and I really liked it.” Penn State: “I talk to them everyday and they came up to my school to talk to me. They have a great relationship with my coach so we talk about Penn State all the time.” “Coach Shrewsberry talks to me everyday and knows Jaylen Brown is my favorite player. He used to coach for the Celtics so he would always send me film on him, try to help me get better, and send me motivational quotes before games. I feel like he’s really locked in on our relationship.” Villanova: “I still talk to coach Dwayne everyday. Our relationship is getting stronger and they’re still a top contender in my decision even with a head coach switch. I really like Villanova, it’s like a Team Takeover and Paul VI thing.” 247sports.com/Article/Basketball-recruiting-Deshawn-Harris-Smith-Xavier-Villanova-Maryland-Penn-State--189033240/Maryland: “Just getting re-offered recently meant a lot to me. It’s nice to have the ability to stay a lot closer to home, to have my family be able to watch me play. They have a great system and I feel like in the past they never really got DMV guys but are off to a good start with Jahnathan. They’re looking for a 5 man freshman class from guys from the area which feels good. Maybe we can build a home freshman class.” 247sports.com/Article/Basketball-recruiting-Deshawn-Harris-Smith-Xavier-Villanova-Maryland-Penn-State--189033240/

On the recruiting front, Harris-Smith said he’s been hearing from a variety of schools, including Butler, Penn State, Villanova, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Xavier. He said he plans to wait until after the second live period to set up some more visits and trim his list. “I’m trying to have a great relationship with the coach like I do with Coach Farello,” he said. “I feel like me and him - I look to him as kind of a father figure, and I need that at the next level because that’s going to help me get to the NBA and that’s my ultimate dream. Player development is huge for me, because like I said, I want to get to the highest level and I know I have to be way more skilled than I am right now to get there. www.dmvelite.com/news_article/show/1230386#.YrSBTgoPvmc.twitter

DeShawn Harris-Smith also had a strong game, impacting the game in more ways than one. He led his team in rebounds with seven, while also adding 10 points and five assists. Smith is a reliable, hard-nosed guard with power. Harris has taken official visits to Penn State and Xavier. Penn State’s head coach Micah Shrewsberry looked on, as did an assistant from Xavier. www.on3.com/news/live-blog-eybl-session-4-live-evaluation-period/

For the second time in just over a week, IU has offered a guard in the rising senior class. On Saturday, Fairfax, Va. based 6-foot-4 combo-guard DeShawn Harris-Smith reported an offer from Indiana. The IU staff watched Harris-Smith play this weekend at the Nike EYBL event in Kansas City according to multiple reports. For spring and summer basketball, Harris-Smith plays for Team Takeover on the Nike EYBL Circuit. That’s the same Washington D.C. area program that produced Victor Oladipo and Xavier Johnson. www.thedailyhoosier.com/iu-basketball-recruiting-hoosiers-offer-2023-guard-deshawn-harris-smith/

Perhaps no one elevated himself more on Day 1 than Team Takeover’s DeShawn Harris-Smith (2023). The big-bodied guard posted two absurd stat lines in two wins on Sunday: 17 points, 11 rebounds, and 2 assists against ProSkills, and 17 points, 13 rebounds, and 9 assists against Georgia Stars. The explosive lefty plays his high school ball at Paul VI Catholic (Virginia) and showed growth as both a shooter and a slasher this past season. Also noteworthy: his Twitter handle is @thatdogdeshawn in an era where every player wants to “have that dog in them.” Harris-Smith certainly lives up to that billing. He holds offers from Iowa, Virginia Tech, Indiana, Maryland, and Villanova among others. thefieldof68.substack.com/p/-a-high-school-basketball-tradition?r=8p5cn&utm_medium=ios

As a junior, he was the VISAA Division 1 Player of the year as well as first team WCAC.
Watching him play reminds me of 80's Hoya players - strong, doesn't back down, wills his teams to victory through true grit.
He, with Dug McDaniel (Michigan), led last year's young Paul VI team to WCAC, VISAA State, and Bass Pro Shop Tournament of Champions championships.
Glad he's getting recognized on EYBL circuit this summer.

Local kid who is blowing up nationally, reminds somewhat of Cam Whitmore in that respect. Go get it done, Hoyas coaches!

Not to be that guy, Hoyaboya, but I wouldn’t spend much time tracking him. Seems very unlikely he’s a Hoya.
