Some interesting quotes from this article: Maryland: “That’s an opportunity to stay home. I know a lot of people think my game fits the Big East but the Big-10 is another good opportunity. It’s playing in one the best conferences in America. There’s also opportunity to play right away over there. The two guys committed in my class right now I’ve already played with both of them so we already have good chemistry from the jump. Being a hometown group we would have a lot of push and support behind us. Coach Willard is a great coach who does the best for his guys and let’s them rock out.” Villanova: “I think everybody knows their connection with Takeover and PVI. With Coach Neptune being the head coach he was already there so I’m not really worried about the culture of Villanova changing. He’s been there for 12 years with the program. Villanova is a winning program plays the right way and develops a lot of pros.” 247sports.com/Article/Basketball-recruiting-Deshawn-Harris-Smith-Penn-State-Maryland-Villanova-Indiana-Xavier-191822596/Amp/

With an expert pick placed into On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine (RPM), let’s review the intel as we rank the contenders. Since being named head coach, Kevin Willard has prioritized locking down the DMV. A central figure in keeping that talent home in 2023 is Deshawn Harris-Smith. Already committed are DMV natives four-star Jamie Kaiser and three-star Johnathan Lamothe. Harris-Smith is familiar with both, having played with them growing up. They all bring a local pride in bringing Maryland back to its glory days. Willard did an excellent job of building a relationship with Harris-Smith and discussing building a fence around the local area. Willard also showed the four-star wing exactly how they would play him and that the depth chart ahead of Harris-Smith was thin. Harris-Smith is particularly close with Jamie Kaiser, so when he decided to stay home with Maryland, it was only a matter of time before Harris-Smith did as well. At the end of the day, staying home, playing with his friends, and the opportunity to play early was too much for the other programs to overcome. www.on3.com/news/intel-ranking-the-contenders-for-four-star-deshawn-harris-smith/

DHS is supposedly announcing his decision tomorrow night. Willard just owning the DMV right off the bat. I read his introduction speech when he was hired - said the same that all coaches say, want to keep all of the best recruits in the area @ the local school. Looks like Willard is following through on that.

On Wednesday evening, the Maryland coaching staff received their third four-star commitment in the 2023 class with the addition of DeShawn Harris-Smith, who chose the Terrapins over Indiana, Penn State, Villanova and Xavier. WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE TERRAPINS The addition of Harris-Smith gives Kevin Willard his third top-100 option on the wing in this class, joining Jamie Kaiser and Jahnathan Lamothe. The Terrapins are in fantastic shape at the 2 and 3 spots with those three prospects now in the fold, so now their attention will shift to other positions. At point guard, Elmarko Jackson, a player who received a bump in the latest Rivals150 is at the top of the wish list. When addressing the need for post players, look for Maryland to push hard for Mouhamed Dioubate and monitor a possible reclass from DMV target Derik Queen. basketballrecruiting.rivals.com/news/deshawn-harris-smith-commits-to-maryland3 other reasons this is significant 1. Local recruiting ties The narrative around Maryland basketball has always been the same – “If we could ever get everyone to stay home…” Well, don’t look now, but Willard is starting to accomplish that. It began when he first arrived last spring with transfers and less celebrated local prospects, but has gone to a new level this summer with some of the region’s most established and heavily recruited prospects. Equally relevant, is that it hasn’t been specific to one grassroots program or circuit. Lamothe comes from the Nike sponsored Team Durant program, Kaiser from the Adidas sponsored New World program, and Harris-Smith from the Nike sponsored Team Takeover program. In short, keeping the top local talent is absolutely huge for Willard, but doing it while building local relationships across the board is even more impressive. hoyatalk2.proboards.com/post/989117/edit"A big thing was staying at home," he said. "I got a huge supporting cast and I feel like I wouldn’t be able to leave. I wanted them to be there to support me because they have been supporting me my whole basketball career. There’s also an opportunity to play right away and it’s something that a lot of schools can’t offer. I feel like coach Willard is trying to bring Maryland basketball back and take care of the DMV guys. The whole class is DMV guys right now so I feel like he actually cares about us.” It just feels like he actually cares about us," Harris-Smith explained of why he's resonating with the local talent. "He’s a player’s coach, he wants all of us to succeed. Us being hometown kids everybody is going to be looking to see what we do at Maryland so there is some pressure for us to succeed and have good college careers. He talks about how he will play me as a combo guard and that’s how he will play me in college with me and Jahn [Jahnathan Lamothe] rotating at the one- and two- will be great for me and him. When he was the coach at Seton Hall you could see how his players play with confidence like Myles Powell. He was out there playing without thinking that if you take a bad shot then he’s going to take you out so I feel like that’s what made me like coach Willard the most.” 247sports.com/college/basketball/recruiting/Article/4-star-DeShawn-Harris-Smith-commits-to-Maryland-Kevin-Willard-2023-basketball-recruiting-Jamie-Kaiser-Jahnathan-Lamothe-191997891/

They have a strong class. Hopefully we can add another piece with Allen and add some transfer(s) for our own strong class. As nice as it is to keep locals at home, with the environment changing so much, we will have to see how it all pans out, and how many of those guys contribute and stay.

Damn! Another Thompson/Ewing lover excuse down the drain… this one joined the “small Catholic schools cannot compete against the State colleges” narrative of the last JT3 years…
