Gotta think Kobe Clark is either still injured or redshirting. Thinking that too. He has not played much at all this year or last year. Can a player redshirt two years? He should qualify...I would love to see him play.

Team played great. Hopefully all will benefit from the experience. As Ryan develops and gains strength, he's going to be really good, he has skills.
As young guys play, they will relax or build up to the challenge and play better. Ewing did a very good job too.

Guys I’m a bad fan. Completely forgot about this game lmao. And of course it’s the best performance of the season I’ve been forgetting on purpose. At some point this program will hopefully be back, and I have a lot of respect for those fans that are staying as engaged now as we all were a decade ago. I’m still following along and hoping to see the young guys develop. However, with a staff that is openly mocked for not recruiting our area, an athletic department that refuses to promote the team, plus nearly a decade since being good, it’s more of a very casual fandom right now for me personally, which is something I seriously never thought I’d say.

They both got significant run. Perhaps (and maybe it is crazy) Pat was thinking about Cuse in giving Rice more minutes. Since now you are just making sh** up, here is some fact based history because this has nothing to do with Syracuse. Every time in his collegiate career Rice has shot over 70% for a game , he shot less than 30% the next game. As every thoughtful golfer knows, just because you shoot a low net score today doesn’t mean you will break par tomorrow….no matter how euphoric you feel after today’s round. I'll take a 30 point win given we are 4-4 rather than pulling out a magnifying glass to look for negatives. Interesting golf analogy.

Really enjoyed the ball movement on offense and the contributions of both post players tonight. Ewing had these kids focused on distribution and crashing the board for offensive rebounds. Aminu is growing quickly and while this opponent is not an upper echelon team, neither were Dartmouth, St. Joe’s and South Carolina. Signs of growth across the board tonight. Hopefully it continues when they step up in class against the Orange and TCU. Noticed the same. All credit to guys tonight. They were really, really good. And UMBC isn’t the most crap team we’ve played by a fair stretch. The youngsters are talented. We just shouldn’t have to start from scratch every season. If we had two other returning upperclassmen other than Carey, this would be a solid team. Good, they were like a young machine, clicking on all cylinders! Especially early in the game!

Progress, baby steps. - Posting about Rice every game feels weird. He's going to take a ton of shots. When he's on, it carries our offense. When he's off, it almost submarines our chances of being competitive. And there's no in between. His first shot is literally the most important of the game for Gtown. Celebrating when he's hot and complaining when he misses just feels pointless. Some days it will win games for us, other days it will kill our chances. Hopefully Saturday we get the fire Kaiden
- Dante 7 assists, 1 turnover (and the turnover I'd like to see Carey get to that ball on fast break). Reasonably under control, and picked his spots pretty well. His only long 2 early in the shot clock was to stem the tide of the UMBC run, probably the right spot there to assert himself.
- I really liked when Ryan and Beard joined Aminu / Carey in the first half, they were able to keep the momentum going, nice pick and roll where Beard sent the help defender to the 3 point line before dropping to Ryan for the dunk. But when Riley came in, I was expecting Rice to come back in with him. Now it's Beard, Riley, Carey, Collin, Ryan (and then Billingsley 1 min later)...that's just not fair to Riley and led to an incredibly rough stretch. I understand the desire to play the freshmen, I continue to think their best chance for success is finding spots to pair them with starters.
- UMBC still took a ton of threes, but at least in the 2nd half they didn't feel as open or in rhythm (subjective of course). Hopefully the team is getting the importance of proper close outs (although Riley had one in front of Ewing in 1st half where he was almost jogging out there and Ewing looked like he lost it)
- For the "we don't run any plays" crowd...first play of game we run a pick and roll with Aminu getting a screen from Dante, because Ewing knew they would switch. That got 5'2 Rogers on Aminu, who immediately backed him down and blew past him for a layup. That was clearly planned before the game, nice planning and execution all around

Great job, Hoyas.
Not too much to say about that one. Lots of that is stuff you hope would happen vs an early season cupcake - solid play from stars, long stretches of dominance, nobody overworked.
Nice to see Ryan control the paint a bit. His lack of athleticism will hurt against big, crafty centers (and even shows vs quicker undersized opponents) - but he's got good hands and a nose for the ball. They made a point of getting him the ball on a number of possessions - like Pat said he wanted to last game - and he looked pretty good for the most part.
He's got the tools to be a good starter down the line. Just hope he progresses - like all the frosh.
Rice - wow. Incredible. But does anybody wanna bet the farm 1-8 isn't happening next game? I wouldn't. Gimme a couple more of those 4/5/6 three games against Syr/TCU/BE and I'll stop worrying.

Juice the Cuse, Hoya Saxa Dante played more of a facilitator role which is what is needed. We won't win if he has the most field goal attempts on the team. The shot distribution was really good in this game. Mutombo actually had the most field goal attempts at 15 attempts.

Mutombo keeps the ball high and arms always up, which helps him get blocks and rebounds, get his shot off quickly and prevents his ball from being stolen. Rice I don't mind. He has a quick release which makes him almost unguardable. The only variable is if he is on or not. But everything is usually really close even when he is off. He also catches and shoots. He doesn't have to take a bunch of dribbles which bogs the offense down and ball stops. He doesn't have to be ball dominant. All his shots are good looks because they are just catch and shoot.

Hot Kaiden will carry us to a win over UMBC but save some for Saturday. This was an understatement. That was one of the all time Hoyas performances. I would rather him shoot 4/8 each game than trade 0/8 with an 8/8. Wonder if Ewing will start to sit him early in the nights he doesn't have it or if games like this cloud his judgement all year. It is very hard. If Rice hits even two shots on Sunday at the right times, that game is down to the wire. His misses on open threes KILLED us. And then he comes back looking like Curry...insane.

I like that we are playing Cuse at home, so Rice can at least shoot at the same hoops. The Dome can mess with your depth perception the first time playing there.

Looking at the box score there were several very solid performances in different areas: Wilson: 4 blocks in 13 min. Harris: 6 boards and 7 assists in 23 minutes. Aminu's double double in 24 minutes. Mutombo: double double with 4 blocks in 18 minutes Billingsly: 7 boards in 8 minutes. Beard: 6 assists in 16 minutes. Rice: wow. These are numbers that build confidence in these kids. Couldn't have come at a better time and I credit Pat and staff for getting them ready after the recent debacles.

Great team win. This is how I'm sure many of us would have preferred the Dartmouth and Longwood games to go.
As I mentioned in the waning minutes of the game, this was won on passing and rebounding. We out hustled them across the court, won the 50-50 balls, and got guys in positions to take good shots. When Rice is set and in his preferred shots, its nearly automatic. When he's being run off screens and fading any direction, he often misses. We made a concerted effort to get the ball inside to our Cs, Ryan was able to take advantage and make post moves and Malcolm was always ready to receive that dump off. The Freshman got a ton of minutes which is what is needed to get them acclimated and push their development forward, both Beard and Riley had ups and downs but looked more comfortable with each minute they got on the court. Billingsly didn't have the best game but his athleticism and rebounding outside of his zone still let him put up good numbers and get some easy baskets. Dante filled the stat sheet and it looked like he was trying to distribute a more then going for a mid range shot on the first move...it also allowed the ball to continue to move and let him get good shots later in the possession.
In the end though, it all came down to rebounding and we won that battle not just because we were a bigger team; the guys went after it! 61 reb to their 30. We also did great on the O boards which is key for this weekend...we need to go and get the boards against the Zone. Hopefully last night was a turning point and the guys start to realize what is needed to win games.
Go Hoyas! Lets keep the momentum going!
Also unsurprising to see who hasn't commented (or who didn't even bother to watch) the game. Personally, I don't care if people have negative outlooks but how could you not appreciate how the team played together and their enjoyment on the court.

Any game is a good game when Victor and Chuma get some PT. The whole team was rooting hard for Victor to get his first career points. Chuma is also so quick getting to the basket. Both are great Hoyas and hopefully we get some more Victor for the Victory minutes this season (and his next two years).

Did not get to watch last night, but two stats that jump out to me:
1. PGs combined for 13 assists and 1 TO--including 6ast/0 TO for Beard. 13:1 ratio is pretty preeeetttttyyy good
2. Rebounding margin was 61 to 30??!! I mean I know we had size on these guys, but holy hell

Some brief thoughts: - It was nice to see us outwork/outathlete this group. It's not necessarily indicative of future success against better teams, but it is an important step to be able to use those advantages to beat teams that don't have them. Even if you take our crazy 3 pt shooting down to 8-23, we still win by 15 largely on rebounding.
- The pre-game discussion is odd in light of this game (and some others). I understand the "the year is lost, just get young players time" idea, but a) last year we said that and the upperclassmen actually coalesced and did something b) other than Carey and Rice, who are actually old? c) This team dropped a 14 point lead in a heartbeat with all the inexperienced players on the floor.
- On the last point, we're simply hamstrung by two facts: the freshmen are largely a complete disaster on defense, and aside from Harris, Muhammed and Rice, we have no even slightly consistent way to generate offense. You can't take all three off the court, and it's probably a mistake to play without two for any stretch.
- To that point, Rice is bad at defense. Like really bad. And sometimes he can't hit anything. But he has to play, and he has to shoot. We can lament the inconsistency so far, but since we're not drowning in weapons, we must go with what we got. He actually has a Curry-like release and I think rather than trying to find ways to sit him we need to find ways to get him into a rhythm.
- It's largely the same with Dante. I see a ton of angst over long two pointers (that he tends to hit) and his aggressive style that can lead to dicey situations or turnovers. But he's a sophomore point guard who plays good defense, has a 15% TO rate and a 30%+ assist rate, and oh, by the way, tends to take the vast majority of our late in the shot clock, no one can create shots. He's doing a lot. He has to, people.
- Both Malcolm and Ryan played well, but it wasn't much of a test. UMBC had no one down low. It's been our achilles heel. Our freshmen are bad at defense, but freshmen tend to get better. Our centers ... they are going to tear us apart defensively from what I can see. Ewing hasn't been good at developing defenses that balance interior defense and perimeter defense, but I actually wonder if it is a bit hopeless this year. We really need one of these guys to step up and being able to rebound and stop a guy once in a while.
- For some strange reason, people seem to think Carey has been good this year. Other than starting the season at 60% from 3 ... he's been awful to the level that I think he needs to consider giving back the captaincy. I'm one of the original hoyalalk OGs on efficiency stats ... but man, I think we're misusing. Poor defense, poor decision making, disappearing, and an efficiency rating that is held up by unsustainable shooting and free throw drawing. Is Carey getting these calls in the Big East. He's weirdly worse than his numbers but better than he's been playing, but he needs to step up. I like the frosh, but if we're going be anything, I suspect it is because Carey and Rice become the consistent performers we need, along with Dante and Aminu.
- The freshman class has a lot to like. I just wish we didn't have to play them so much because it's a struggle bus for a decent number. Aminu is great, of course, and in another world where everyone didn't think they were an NBA #1 pick and have a bunch of people screaming it, he'd be the perfect example. Because he plays largely below the rim, and needs perimeter work at his size for the NBA. Ten years ago, he'd be an amazing college player that'd stay three years and lead his team to a Final Four. I worry that expectations and outside pressures are going to rush him before he's ready. He'll be an NBA player ... but 6'5" guards muscling down low and using smart pump fakes is not an NBA game right now. This is not a criticism: he just needs to extend his range, work on some explosiveness, refine his defense, etc.
- I really like Beard. He's smart, he looks for the pass, he has good vision. He's more of a combo, if we're quibbling, though, as he's not bringing a ton to the table in terms of forcing the defense to react. He plays opportunistically, but for that to be a plus, he needs to learn team defense and he needs to be able to hit some outside shots. He doesn't do well on the dribble under pressure or in one on ones, so he needs to fill out those other parts.
- You can see the potential with Riley, but I think everyone should acknowledge that he's pretty terrible right now. Some good steals, but defensively he's all over the place, and offensively, he's mostly bringing offensive fouls. I do love the effort level and no one should take this as a long term knock. But I don't think people should be complaining about playing time for the frosh when he's registered 35% of minutes and been showing merely potential so far. This is investment in the future.
- Billingsley and Holloway aren't the same player at all, but I feel like both of them have the strong potential to be really, really productive college players. Both use their size pretty well, even if Jalen needs to reign it in a bit. Both need to figure out how to get in shape/weight room to get some more quickness and explosiveness without killing their abilities to use their size. I think if they can do that, they can be effective enough defensively, become an asset on the boards and get that much more effective in their offensive games. Both seem to have pretty good instincts.
[li]Ryan's so very interesting. He's not very bouncy. He doesn't jump. But neither did Roy Hibbert, and he was very effective. Can he get his lateral movement up to where he can become that kind of asset. He actually reminds me of Roy a LOT. It's too bad we don't have a strong upperclassman complement, especially a more athletic center to take the heat off him when he's going to be outquicked. - Overally, super exciting freshmen class (and Holloway has some intriguing things). If we can get Carey to bring back a solid game, Rice to be a bit more consistent, and a non-Aminu freshman to step up, I think we could be better than we think in the Big East. But it'll be that defense that will be the linchpin. We have so many young guys on a team that has rarely played strong team defense to date. It's going to take a good chunk of progression, but we saw it last year.
