www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/32779473/maryland-terrapins-men-basketball-coach-mark-turgeon-steps-10-plus-seasons“He led the Terps to a 226-116 record and five NCAA tournament appearances in the past seven seasons, and he won a share of the Big Ten regular-season championship in 2020… The Terrapins reached the second round of the NCAA tournament last season before falling to Alabama to finish 17-14… The school said the decision for Turgeon to step down was a mutual one, and that a national search for a new coach would take place following this season…” Better record than GU during the same period… various tournament appearances… regular season title… If a Thompson or Ewing had that record at GU, some of you would give him a lifetime contract. At Maryland, that record gets you fired. But JTII did make it to the Sweet 16 and Final Four, made it to the NCCA Tourney in 8 of 13 seasons (62%), won a BET, and three regular season titles... And he got the life-changing contract.

There are two players, but both moved away 5 to 7 years ago and haven't had a home in the DMV, Aminu and Dante. Then you have Carey too. All three left the area, but are back. If you spend any time talking to local players in the last 5 to 10 years nearly all of them say one thing, I want to go to college away from home. Recruiting doesn't fix that. Many of the local WaPo All Met players have said they would have made the same decision to leave the area for college, hands down. But, many also say if something happened and they needed to be home (Pandemic has had a lot of players thinking about this losing relatives) they would play and Georgetown is the program they would want to play at. But, at the end of the day they are happy as all get out to be in college hundreds or thousands of miles away from home. That's the going trend everywhere. and it makes sense. Not true. It’s a case-by-case. DMV prospects feel that GU and Maryland are not doing a good job of recruiting them.

Free transfer is used up, the basic piece is mid-year transfers can't play on two teams has to sit out until the next season if they played at all. NCAA hasn't let that one slide at all. I think the real mistake by the admin/school was to suspend Tre King before the season. I guess if he had played one game and then was booted for the semester, then he would've had to stay at Georgetown. If this had happened early in the summer there still would have been time to get another piece. Really it was just awful timing. I don't understand how you can make that assessment/judgment without knowing even the smallest detail of why he was told to leave.

St. Johns, UCLA, and Ohio State are the exceptions to the non-rural state teams only having 2 or 3 players from within 50 to 100 miles of the university. Utah teams are around 50% local, as are Oregon and University of Washington, but other schools aren't recruiting there very hard. UCLA and Ohio State are the two teams who draw local and are top teams, usually. UNC, Duke, UVA, and most of the Big East, ACC, and Big 12 (in non-rural areas) all basically have 2 or 3 of their 15 players from within 50 to 100 miles of the school. Also, talk to any high school student within 2 year of heading to college, those in college, and those 5 to 10 years out of college. Outside of rural areas they want well away from home. Keeping a player local is hard work as it is against what their teammates are doing and all of their friends who are going to college. Now add in Instagram and TikTok and talk to people this age and that makes the "I want out of here and to go somewhere else" all that much stronger. Georgetown works their butt off locally. I see them all over the place at the top schools, at the public live tournaments, and private runs. People saying they aren't recruiting locally aren't out locally where the good players are at. Most are talking utter nonsense with no facts and making things up. But, watch Instagram where the Hoyas travel outside the area to recruit, but also follow Twitter with Ewing, Oates, Crouch, Kirby, and Waheed sightings in the DMV around the good players in the area. It quickly turns to facts showing many on the board have no clue what they are saying and just making things up.

That's the going trend everywhere. and it makes sense. Not true. It’s a case-by-case. DMV prospects feel that GU and Maryland are not doing a good job of recruiting them. Where? Who? Good players in the DMV are getting Hoya coaches there and talking to the players. If the player is good AND fits what the coaches are looking for they are talking to them. If a players is complaining they either aren't up to Georgetown quality (many who have complained in the past and loudly went to mid-majors and didn't play well there and Hoya fans aren't looking for that junk) or they have a players coming in who is better and / or a better fit. Many complaining also have offers from Georgetown, but they went cold as they didn't play well. One player going to Michigan next year is an old double reclass and will be close to 21 when he starts college. He is a man playing against kids in high school, but undersized but has a high motor and a huge ego to go with it. He is listed at 5'10", but JV players 5'7" are taller than him. Height isn't everything, but an old player who also comes with a lot of handlers. That is a skip for most coaches. If he does well somewhere, like Michigan great. Hoyas have 2 solid point guards already.

Full scholarship college ballplayers are still college kids. Most of us wanted to get the heck away from home, no? And, in some cases, it's far better for kids to leave. Victor Paige comes to mind. I loved watching him play for us but I've often wondered what his life might have looked like if he hadn't played locally.

I don't want to see the type you team you want. You seem to thing players who aren't good should be at Georgetown because they are local. That is clearly genius thinking.

You build your base with the four-year local player. That is what SJU is doing. We should take advantage of the best basketball area in the country, that is our backyard, and build our strong base. Genius!

Maybe we should let all those coaches and experts who think the Maryland job is one of the top 15 head coaching jobs in the nation because it’s in the basketball hotbed know that now that really is not a consideration because all the best recruits want to leave the area.

It quickly turns to facts showing many on the board have no clue what they are saying and just making things up. So we are not to believe the quotes from DMV players, coaches, etc…? I'm looking for names. There are a lot that cry loudly, but aren't close to Big East or top tier D1 level. The DMV is packed with really good players. Ace Baldwin from St. Francis did his best to look like he was getting recruited hard by Georgetown and Maryland, but also complained loudly when he wasn't getting more attention. The only real offers he had were VCU and Richmond and he hasn't played much yet. Rodney Rice really had interest in Georgetown, but was injured his sophomore year and changed from Bullis to DaMatha to get more looks. Pandemic his and nobody was really getting solid looks. But, Rice at 6'4" is a point guard and a slasher who can shoot, when his game is on. He had an offer from Georgetown, he had conversations with them it seems, but Hoyas had Dante and Tyler coming last year. When Tyler pushed it off a year to show up this year, that becomes a road block ahead of Rice. Rowan Baumbach, who Hoyas talked to a lot as a really good 6'4" point guard and someone Rice has serious problems defending, also hit the same roadblock. Rowan wasn't complaining about it, but Rice did a bit, but seems happy with Virginia Tech. Point guard Dug, the 5'6" double reclass really wanted to be seen as having Georgetown recruiting him, we wants a lot of attention. Same roadblock and if he came to Georgetown and took a red shirt year, he would be 25 when he graduated. Seeing him and Rice in the same gym with Hoya coaches there Dug wasn't the one getting talked with. The DMV is stacked. The top players mostly want to play away from home. Those who seem to want to stay often aren't getting offers close to Georgetown's level. It would be like St. Johns competing with low mid-majors. Those usually are the ones crying about things and loudly. If a player is good and stands out locally in the DMV, Georgetown manages to see them. If they are good they talk. I know a couple players at the small Christian schools in PG County that have been quite good and done well in travel ball. Georgetown has made time to check them out one way or another. Hoya coaches know all the WCAC coaches and players and the IAC, but also the good school around Baltimore and Northern Virginia. They are at the live periods at DeMatha and Maret, as well as up and down the East Coast. I've been in the gym in live period when 4 Hoya coaches were there switching between 2 games, with Bray, and Roy Williams, as well as 40 other coaches. If a local coach is complaining they likely aren't all that good as a coach or their player isn't what the Hoyas are looking for. Name a player who complained about not getting recruited who was a pure miss. There will be some as you can't bring everybody in and sometimes there are misses. But, most craying and complaining loudly want to be seen and heard because they don't have what it takes to be seen and heard.

Let me put it this way: if Pat had the best DMV recruiter on staff, do you think he would not be able to close a top DMV recruit? Do you think we have the best staff available to accomplish it right now? Is it impossible to retain the top talent in the area?

Sometimes, kids (and/or their handlers) get googly eyed when big time programs from out of state give them attention in recruiting. Sometimes kids want to leave home and start anew. There are a lot of factors.

Listen to the Chris Wright and Austin Freeman podcast with Jeff Green. Austin ended up at Georgetown because of Jeff Green. Green, Freeman, and Wright all played in the same travel team program and knew each other. Green, Wright, and Freeman were there with Summers (Baltimore) and Hibbert too. But, other than Wright, Georgetown was each of their best offer. They stayed local because Georgetown was the best school interested. Hibbert and Green were Eshrick recruits, but didn't play for him. Green, Hibbert, and Summers came into a Hoya program that wasn't solid and was rebuilding. Wright and Freeman came into a Hoya team just off a solid tournament run. After that there weren't many local recruits.

You complain about me bringing up Rodney Rice then say I didn't repsond? Make up your mind. I also walked through four other local players who felt deeply slighted by Georgetown not recuiting them hard enough, but there weren't spots for them. You haven't done the work of this huge massive problem you state. You are just bringing up BS. I brought facts and loud complainers and likely why they weren't at Georgetown (didn't have talent or Hoyas had two or more better players). Where is this problem. If you have to dig for a problem and it is hard to find, is it really a big problem or one that really isn't big and completely blown out of proportion like many things on this board?
