Anyone who watched the Pistons and Lakers games tonight saw one former Hoya who looked like he belonged and one who didn’t. They play each other tomorrow night. Mac and the Lakers vs Cade and the Pistons, lol. Game is on tonight at 10 pm ET on ESPN2. At my age, it'll be a fight to stay awake to watch it! 😀 More coffee!

What happened to the Orlando summer league?
And why aren't the Pistons in the Las Vegas playoffs?

What happened to the Orlando summer league? And why aren't the Pistons in the Las Vegas playoffs? It's just the top 2 teams with win margin being the deciding factor. Detroit isn't close.

Not a good night for Mac. -22 in 7 minutes. Oof. Getting roasted on the Laker board: PlantedTanks PostPosted: Mon Aug 16, 2021 11:44 pm Post subject: Lakers wasted a camp invite on McClung. He is not close to being ready. He needs to really add to and improve his skillset. Would prefer over Cacok if Lakers decide to sign a developmental player. lakerican PostPosted: Tue Aug 17, 2021 3:49 pm Post subject: TDRock wrote: Ok let’s wake back up SL Lakes Did Queen sit? My takeaways: If Mac and Reeves were one guy, that guy would be worth keeping. Disappointed they didn’t show more…Reeves is barely worth the 2 way forums.lakersground.net/viewtopic.php?t=191413&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=325

Lakers know how to market - it's just as important in LA as winning (which is the ultimate marketing tactic). The only thing worse than losing in LA is being boring. You're competing in the ultimate entertainment capital of the world, you better entertain if you want to stay relevant (and yes, professional sports are first of all another form of entertainment).
If you're doing a camp invite for a UFA, McClung brings as much marketing & entertainment appeal as any. If he works out, great you just drew in more Gen Z fans to your social accounts, they might buy merchandise, they might post about it spreading your brand, and when they make enough money to afford the $300 tickets, they'll be Lakers fans. Build the brand in attempts both big (LeBron, AD, Russ) and small (Mac, previously Caruso) -- why more teams don't understand they are a global brand whose brand needs to be managed is beyond me. They are past the days of being local athletic clubs or regional teams (it's why European soccer's approach will get superseded in the next decade, I think). They are global brands or should be trying to be so if they want to keep their market value. Lakers have known that since before Showtime.
If Mac can't cut it in the NBA (which he definitely can't right now), the Lakers don't care. They put him on the G League team, get most of the same benefits to the brand on social and with Gen Z, increase attention & revenue to a part of the company that has to get subsidized right now (sold out G League arenas? Not out of the question when Mac sold out high school gyms -- even a few more tickets from his Overtime fans is helpful).
What I can't imagine the Lakers are expecting is him to play on their NBA team this year. The last 3 spots are all just placeholders (if they fill them at all) that will get cut once a NBA vet they think can help them gets released. Last year, they saw the Nets sign Griffin (who helped them a bunch) & Aldridge (who got hurt) after getting released, while the Lakers had to work to cut guys they didn't want to cut to sign Drummond after release. They previously signed Morris that way who was very helpful to them. It looks like they are keeping those spots more open this year for that. Really it optimizes their chance of winning a championship far more than signing some G League graduate or UFA. After all, winning is still the best marketing.

I'm thankful for the summer league as it partly filled the gap of no Kenner. Also, it allowed Yurt7 and Pickett to suggest they actually belonged while Mac that he does not. Bile didn't play enough to know. Former Hoyas like Kaleb, Domingo, and White did not show much in limited time. Just the first step; more to come.
