Best dunk I've ever seen in person was Willie Talyor in a pre-season game at McD. He took off from alittle inside the free throw line and dunked it over some stiff. He got called for the charge but I've never seen anyone get off the ground like that.

The best one I have ever seen was a guy named Mark Lenoire from Broad Ripple high school in Indy. He was close to the free throw line and he almost brought down the house against a really bad Park Tudor team. That Broad Ripple squad went on to the regionals and lost to a Warren Central team that featured a guy named Jeff George. He actually was a pretty good high school hooper. I know this is for Indy people only but had to mention it. Actually, these are the type of stories that I LOVE to hear… Some of the best plays I’ve seen were probably in pick-up ball in the students’ gym at A&T…none of them were dunks in traffic though… I’ve started this thread and similar ones on two other boards and it’s just so interesting to hear guys from the SouthEastern Conference and Big Twelve tell stories about games and plays that took place out of my viewing area, or to hear some of the older guys talk about David Thompson, Lew Alcindor, and the Big O… Totally loved the story by HoyaChris and the classic Hoya dunk in McDonough… I was going to come back with best fast-break dunk later on, but it seems like we may be treading on that one with the mention of the Vince Carter dunk over “Frenchie”… Although the Vince Carter dunk was impressive and it got me really “GEEKED-UP”, nothing brings a smile to my face like Dr. J rocking the cradle over Michael Cooper…it’s amazing that no one could think of any of his dunks he’s had in traffic…I’m quite sure there were ‘aplenty’…

I am fond of Demetrius going stong to the hole after a steal against the Cuse @ MCI in Jan '01. They were ranked higher than us at the time (I think, could be wrong), and it was a big win. It was my first home game after moving back to DC and I couldn't get over Hunter's hops (which would make a fine name for a beer, btw).
Three other memorable things from that game:
1) Oranges were thrown on the court at the end of the game.
2) As I was feeling very little pain, I taunted the 7'5" Syracuse player with taunts of "Popa!" all game. I wasn't sure if anyone else remembered Constantin Popa, but I sure did. I can't remember the 'cuse player's name though.
3) A Hoya of virtue, valor and honor walked into Fado (as always, the home of visiting teams' fans) before the game, and in the midst of the sea of orange held up a sign that read, "I wiped my @$$ with your acceptance letter!," and then proceeded to get on camera with it in the student section. I believe that this sign has been revisited in recent years at games, and that the poster (pardon the pun) may in fact be a regular on the board. I hope so. You are a Real Man of Genius.
To bring the thread full circle, I am also determined to do nothing at work today.

I know it wasn't in traffic, but does anyone remember this dunk in the McD's All American dunk contest by James "Flight" White? Absolutely Sick.

My favorite dunk contest dunk (non-Pro division) was Isiah Rider's in the college dunk contest. Baseline, between the legs, touch the ankle kinda thing.

I think now would be a good time to open the door to ALL dunks...alley-oops, fast-breaks, off-the-glass/rim, etc...

Best NON-dunk ever:
I don't remember what year, I don't remember the opponent, but it was Vin-sanity when he was at UNC. He was trailing the play on a fast break, the guy with the ball pulled it out towards the benches, saw Vince streaking, and tossed it up.
Now, mind you, I don't care about UNC. I don't hate em, I don't like him. Watching them gets me about as excited as watching anything on MTV (that is to say, not at all). Great dunks, even though awesome to watch and feats of athleticism I can only dream about, don't get me THAT excited when I'm watching them on tv. That being said...
... so the ball is up in the air, but its way up the lane. If it had landed, I'd say it would have landed only two feet or so inside the foul line. So here comes Vince. He takes off a good shoe-length behind the foul line I'd say, skies to get this ball, his momentum carries him through the lane so quickly that by the time he gets his hand on the ball its in perfect tomahawk position, and he throws down with some of the greatest thunder I have ever... EVER... seen. Nevermind it went off the back of the rim and all the way PAST half court on the fly, it was without a doubt the most violent, poetic, graceful, amazing dunk (or non-dunk) I have ever seen. Despite the fact TV dunks and UNC hoops do nothing for me, I can remember my buddy and I literally leaping out of our seats to see this.

Can we talk about Daryl "Chocolate Thunder" Dawkins here? The man had near-pornographic dunks and shattered back boards like it was his job.

Buffalo, if we're thinking about the same dunk attempt, it was against Duke in'98... Ed Cota threw it off the glass for a trailing Vince Carter, and the whole crowd rose to their feet screaming, "WWHHOOOOOAAAAAA...AAAAAAHHHHHHHH!HH!!!!" as the basketball bounced off the back of the rim and landed out of bounds... had that one on tape...along with Hoyas at Redmen '96, Hoyas at Orange '96, Hoyas vs. UMASS '96....loaned it out to a Carolina Alum...never saw it again...

In case any one in thinking: where is Ed Cota now? He is the starting PG for Dinamo, Saint-Petersburg's Euro League team.

He's doing well, don't worry - he makes 1M Euro + a year and drives a fairly nice Benz judging from the car parked in the players lot with the Russian "Cota" license plate.

Anybody remember te celebrity dunk contest ABC showed parts of during all the halftime show's during the mid 90's? That was sweet.
I know I'm gonna get yelled at for this, but another great non-dunk was Rudy Gay's from the MCI matchup last year. Good gawd did he get high. I swear the ball was near the tip top of the backboard.
Good thing he missed it horribley and had that awful spill for a "landing" (great laugh), otherwise we might have really been murdered during that first half...

I heard he was a good guy so I wish him well... Maybe he was a nice guy, but around UNC he was known for being a huge pothead and kind of a punk. Also, I'm not sure if he graduated or not...if not, what a disgrace to my school.

Does anyone remember the opener for 96-97' against Cleveland State? I just remember seeing the highlights on TV; Victor had a two-handed jam in which he swung from the rim like a circus freak afterwards because he dunked the ball so hard.
Man I miss watching Victor play. He may have been out of control, but he was fun to watch. That Washingtonian article about him after he was shot and lost his eye was pretty sad...I hope that he is doing okay.
