Unless you’re living at 3623 O St… I lived in that house from 1980-82. Much better then without a bike rack or a big dorm across the street.

Unless you’re living at 3623 O St… Well, it was previously around the corner and across the street from the entrance to that same house, rather than along its side, so I think they'll take that tradeoff. Especially since its 37th Street location would cause occasional conflicts with traffic, including the G2 bus. Honk honk honk

Just imagine what a $30m scholarship endowment could do... It could buy 20 perpetual scholarships, 10 faculty chairs, or even a down payment on a new on-campus gym. But none of those are what the donor wants, nor probably GULC. Georgetown sits on the outside of the T-14 for a variety of reasons (Russky can go into more detail on these) but its facilities are comparable to a much smaller school. Where the likes of Duke and Chicago have about 650 students, GULC has 2,000 and with that kind of traffic McDonough Hall shows its age. A 200,000 SF building addresses many of these issues.

He's already donated for scholarships in th LLM program as noted in the article: Tsai’s $30 million gift follows a $600,000 gift he made to the Law Center in 2020 to create the D. Tsai Endowed Scholarship Fund, which so far has provided six full tuition scholarships for Master of Laws students. Tsai said he created the fund in order to share the gift his father gave him by encouraging him to leave home for the first time ever to study in the United States. (My LLM "scholarship" was courtesy of the US Navy and the American taxpayers! 😀)

Liz went to GULC, so she knows that institution and the dynamics behind its rankings and positioning within legal academia far, far better than I do.

While I am glad he has contributed some money to scholarships, my point is there is such a larger need for a school that seeks to be known for putting its graduates in public sector positions that pay 1/2 (or less) of what one single year of law school costs these days. GULC's issues aren't the facilities, though I would say that the current use of space is abysmal and strategic renovations (or use of all of its other space) can address whatever space issues this new building seeks to solve. The future of law is virtual. GULC now sits outside of the T-14 because it's too big; it is trying to be everything to everyone and has lost focus.

I guess we found a place with more permissive building rules than Georgetown Something reads as highly premature with this, or lost in translation. 1. In the NY Times account, it reads that "The two [presidents] were also scheduled to discuss security cooperation, including on cybersecurity, and a new initiative for a satellite program at Georgetown University, the first American university to open a campus in Indonesia." Why would President Biden need to negotiate this? Is a trade deal a precondition for inviting American universities in? Or is the phrase " at Georgetown University" a typo? 2. The other skepticism is that when there are major announcements like this, it is carefully, underscore, carefully curated through the public relations office and specific statements follow from the President's office and the respective deans. As of 8 pm, nothing from any GU channel. (Jack DeGioia wasn't even at the speech, per photos.) 3. There is no "Education City" in Jakarta and the leading Catholic school in the country (Atma Jaya) is mostly business and engineering, as are most Indonesian schools. So if there's a "fit", I'm not seeing it. Short of a nine figure gift or somesuch benevolence, I'm not sure where this goes; at least not yet.

When you accept money from foreign actors, you are now beholden to them. Very slippery slope. See Qatar and current Middle East situation.

What's weird about that line you quoted is that it's been nuked from the NYT article and lives on only in a couple of archived versions hosted on other sites. In any event, just because two presidents "discuss" something doesn't mean they are "negotiating" something. I suspect this is more likely to be something like the Villa or the facility in Alanya than a "campus" as most people think of it.
