As an upstate New Yorker who grew up 35 minutes from the Syracuse campus, and whose old friends and in-laws are rabid Orangeboy fans, my blood has started to boil days before this game ever since the Manley Field House victory in '80.
For the first time ever, I just can't get excited about this game. I suppose the pandemic and the absence of fans doesn't help, but it is mostly the downtrodden state of our program. I have literally zero confidence that we can win a game that comes down to the last minutes, and even though Magoo's Minions are a fairly mediocre program these days, I fear the best we can hope for is to keep it close - and then implode down the stretch.
That said, the Syracuse 2-3 zone begs for a catch and shoot sniper like TJ. We have to get him some minutes here to see what he can do.

Not to overstate it but to me Berger's minutes against Cuse is almost a litmus test for Ewing's coaching acumen. Ewing knows the 2-3 zone so I fully expect to see Berger in for more minutes.

Limiting turnovers and getting back in transition are going to be huge for this game. I actually like our chances halfcourt vs. halfcourt; this is not a good perimeter shooting team we're going against and I think we can hold our own in the paint. But if we don't take care of the ball and hustle back on D after a miss, it's going to get ugly in a hurry because as much as we like to pride ourselves on playing fast, we really don't know how to do that very well. Traditionally, they do.
Not sure how many saw the graphic during the Butler game, but we went into it 354th of 357 D1 teams in turnover margin (-5.8 per game). Our guys have to understand that a missed shot is better than a live ball turnover. Get them on the rim and go after it. Q/Timmy are important here, they need to crush the offensive glass AND kick it back out when appropriate. Cuse bigs are usually foul prone and just not good at all.
Have seen a lot of calls for Berger to be the guy who can beat the zone, but I think Carey is especially key. If he can flash to the foul line and hit a few, that definitely will force the zone to collapse a little bit. Catch and shoot, forget putting the ball on the floor. It's not his forte anyways.
Thinking this will have a similar feel to the WVU game. If we sustain effort and focus, we can be right there until the end. If we are there, can we finish? Not nearly as optimistic about that.

The most maddening aspect of our TOs is how many of them are just careless or lazy. The drive into the lane with no idea what you are going to do with the ball, the lazy no look pass, the attempt to force the ball into a post who has already been doubled or who does not have good positioning to receive the pass and so on. There is no such thing as a good TO but as I have suffered through these games it constantly occurs to me that least half of our TOs are easily avoidable with some focus and effort.

Really 8:00pm? The same time as WFT... Well that sucks. Hopefully one game is over by halftime. Who am I kidding? No way I'm not watching playoff football no matter how long the odds.... 😭

Have been waiting 4 years for Pickett to hurt the SU zone with a flash to the foul line for a jumper, over the zone with his length. Maybe this is the year??🙄

Dislike Syracuse but cannot remember a year when the game seemed less important or less interesting. This is another lost season and for me it is now only about watching how Ewing plays it out and shows growth in terms of teaching these kids to close out a game.

Game's start time has just been changed. Game has been rescheduled to Saturday, at 7:00 pm (instead of 8:00 pm), and will now be on ESPN instead of ESPN 2. Change necessitated by postponement of Clemson at North Carolina game (Clemson has now paused competition due to COVID-19), and opening of television slot on ESPN.

Ok.... dare I say we have a good chance here.
We match up pretty well. Our offense mainly struggles with having nobody who can beat their man one on one. You don't have to do that against a zone. We also have some legit shooters, like Berger, Blair, and Carey. We have length in Pickett and Sibley who can play on the wings effectively. And one of our strengths has always been offensive rebounding, which is much easier to do against a zone.
Defensively, yeah this isn't going to be pretty. They can score. Their guards are lights out shooters. They haven't shot it well yet this season, but they absolutely can. Griffin can play. We have to not give either of their guard's easy looks, and we will probably need one of our wings to step up and lock down Griffin (which isn't impossible). But scoring won't be a problem. At all.
Ewing has always designed good offense against a zone and our pieces this year work best against a zone. We can take these guys. We match up well. Just have to defend and make our jumpers. Berger should play a lot this game. Just don't play Bile in the high post. That's a TO waiting to happen.

Hard to shoot in the Dome. We haven’t won on the road. We can’t play a solid second half of basketball. Call me skeptical.

This has to be the least interested I've ever been in watching my 2nd fav rivalry in sports. Both teams are not what they normally are. Syracuse has shooters but not like years past. Neither team can hold a lead. Magoo as much as I dislike him can still coach a turd of a team. Hoyas need to exploit their lack of interior ability and stay strong on the wings. I still pray for a win but if the Hoyas don't it won't be as devastating to me as it has been my past 30+ years of fandom.

I can’t believe I have to remind people of the true nature of our enemy: "Amin would allegedly talk about their plans with code words. "Syracuse" meant "Syria," and "basketball" meant "jihad."' Link

Sure doesn't feel like a Gameday but I'm definitely ready to see a strong performance against the Orange. Let the shots fly, play strong defense, and move the ball!
Go Hoyas!!
