2 membership cards revoked. You each have to write a Boeheim booger joke & say 50 Manley Field House is Officially Closeds as penance. I can’t believe I have to remind people of the true nature of our enemy: "Amin would allegedly talk about their plans with code words. "Syracuse" meant "Syria," and "basketball" meant "jihad."' LinkNobody - and I mean NOBODY! - knows this rivalry any better than I do. As I have posted before, I grew up 35 minutes from SU and was an avid Orange fan. I saw Bing and Magoo play. In high school I watched my girlfriend in a play while listening to a big Syracuse - Louisville game on my transistor radio with an ear piece. I watched SU football sitting on concrete bleachers in 30° weather at old Archbold Stadium. Then I went to law school at GU in the fall of '79. When Hoyas v. Orangeboys came around, my friends started riding me about the game. Over and over. And the Manley Field House was officially closed and all I heard was whining about refs, physical play, boo hoo hoo. Since then I have lived the game. I have been to almost every Hoya game at the Dome, listened to the unwashed masses scream, curse and, too often, rejoice. Michael Jackson with the dagger from the top of the key, Smitty weaving through 5 defenders for the scoop at the buzzer; Pearl sticking a knife through my heart, Sam Jefferson with the brain fart(!). During the heart of the rivalry it was just me against my friends, family and in-laws, 1 versus many in person, by phone, then by social media. My gut hurt and my blood boiled for days when we lost to the Orangeboys; the air smelled cleaner, food tasted sweeter, and life was perfect when we won. But then Syrapuke took the money and ran to the ACC. Our Hoyas nosedived to the bottom of the (new) Big East; some Syracuse fans started to mock and pity us instead of hate us. Add in the pandemic, bizarro season, fanless arenas - and yet another rock bottom Hoya season. I want to win this game. Personally, more than any other game on the schedule. But I just won't be devastated by a loss.

As I said on another thread, the only thing that would make this season bearable would be wins over Syracuse, UCONN, and Nova. Wins over DePaul would be nice just to keep us out of last place.

(Updating this with the Butler game now): barttorvik.com/team.php?team=Georgetown&year=2021If you look at the +/- column it tracks the average margin during the entire game. If you look at any other team's page, it is incredibly rare to lose a game when your average margin is anything higher than +5 on average; that's really considered a blowout. Teams have roughly a 95 pct chance to win a game where the margin is this big. In fact, look at our Coppin St game where we wound up winning by 32, the average margin was only slightly higher there, coming in at +7.1. After the Butler game we now have lost 3 such games with a +5 average margin in the BE already this year. In the Ewing Era, these are games with the largest average margin in a loss: (sadly 4 of the top 6 are among our past 11 games when you go back to the BET last year): 12/27/17 vs Butler: +7.7 1/2/21 vs Marquette: +6.7 12/11/20 vs Villanova: +5.5 1/6/21 @ Butler: +4.5 12/8/18 @ Syracuse: +4.1 3/11/20 @ St John's (BET): +3.7 12/16/17 vs Syracuse: +3.2 So do we have enough talent to lead the majority of these games? Or do we exceed expectations and the coaches get us to play better than our talent warrants for the majority of these games we wind up losing? Even a bad team would get lucky enough to win a few of the above games. It’s really crazy how statistically improbable it is we’ve lost all of these games. I tend to think if we are good enough to take / hold leads this long, then it’s not fair to say we don’t have the talent...

The fact we can’t close out these games I think speaks to a failure to adjust when the lead evaporates. PG play is also magnified in close games so I do think while we can build leads without that position being solid for the first 30 mins, but it rears its ugly head in those last 10. What’s interesting about the list of games is they are mostly all this year or Ewing’s first year. When we had Akinjo and/or Allen, we closed games infinitely better.

I don’t remember lots (any?) well closed out games last year and the last one in particular stands out as an egregious collapse.

But we did win some tighter games at OSU, Butler and St John’s, and home vs Creighton and DePaul. Notably in that last regrettable game it turned when Allen got hurt.

Maybe we should wear pinnies if that gets us to play like it’s practice.

True, the losses were more often straight up blowouts. I guess the meltdowns against Nova and SJU to end the season left too big an impression on me.
