Tell that to the Knicks too. He did okay with the Knicks. Okay is about the best a coach can do with the Knicks ever since Pat left. An ok coach at Georgetown feels like an impossible dream.

Can’t get too worked up about this one. Disappointed, but when our defense is basically just hoping that teams miss shots, we will lose when they hit their threes. We tried some 3/4 pressure which I thought was slightly better, but, really we just don’t have any answers on the defensive side. Same old song and dance. Our only way to win is to outscore teams, and that’s just not going to happen often at this point.

Our offense looked a lot better last year. We don’t seem to be moving the ball around the perimeter well. I wish we would set a play to give Berger an open look. What’s the point of having a money shooter if you can’t get him open looks.

He didn't lose it but it took him a while to get into the front court and then he had his back to the hoop trying to run PNR instead of moving it. StJ's ball pressure really disrupted us. Couldn't even get solid ball screens. It left us too often in a forced one on one situation with the shot clock winding down. Not a good place to be when we don't really have any players that can consistently best a good defender. We did have Berger open a few times, but we certainly didn't run anything for him. The D is bad. I think it's more individual D right now than schematic. Aside from Dante, no one can keep a player in front of them. Rotations look so much worse when, well, you always have to rotate. We can block shots but they lead to offensive boards.

I like both players, but Blair and Carey are not PGs. Ideally, you don’t want them bringing the ball up and running the offense. May not have too many options this year though.

Does this loss mean that we will beat SJU in the BE tourney?

Dante had a rough game, but he's the guy who should be bringing the ball up and getting us into the offense. Blair & Carey are the two guys who can consistently score from range if given clean looks -- our offense should be biased towards getting those guys clean looks. Hoping we can throw Berger on this list soon enough. Frustrating to not put Pickett on that list -- but unless he's completely set/squared/balanced, he's just not reliable. I feel like this team will go as Q goes. He has potential, and if he improves, we have a chance to steal a few BE games. He has made a difference protecting the rim, but needs to add power to his offensive game, and be able to pass out when it's not there. At this point, when he catches, he's taking the baby hook, period. He's not passing out, he's not going up strong. That's not gonna get it done against good competition. We'll be out-talented for the remainder of our games. I'm just looking for improvement & eventually, cohesiveness. Unfortunately, didn't see much today. But I'll keep tuning in.

Recall some posts this past offseason saying the defense should be improved over last year, even with no change to scheme, because of an uptick in overall athleticism and having more than 6 bodies. Didn't think that was true then and don't think it is now. This team, as presently constructed, still should be better defensively than it is. But it needs help from the staff to put together an actionable plan to execute and accomplish that. To date, it hasn't. We've also grown accustomed to a very low level of athleticism across the board here over the past few seasons so that when we see someone with even average athleticism, we think we're getting an athlete. The answer is yes, we need both.

SJU effectively guarded our ballhandlers as they moved the ball up court. Wearing our guards down and chewing up time. Posh was an absolute dog.

The answer is yes, we need both. We need the right kind of athlete. Again excepting Dante, our quickness and what I'll call foot-eye coordination is terrible. Jamorko is under any measure a great "athlete," but his foot speed isnt, even for his size. You can see it most obviously in his offensive game where he struggles to ad lib so much. Same is true on D, where you are necessarily reactive. Carey and Bile are downright poor on ball defenders also. So is Jalen Harris. And Berger. Blair I think is average. So, of our seven primary non-post defenders, five are poor and only one inspires confidence. Others may disagree with my assessment at the margins, but regardless.....you can't win with that unless the other team lets you or the matchups strangely work. Not if you're playing a standard M2M. I think we have to commit to something else. Much more zone. Something gimmicky. Something else.

They tagged Berger from the moment he checked in. We either could not, or simply did not, adjust. One small failure on a very long list.

The answer is yes, we need both. barttorvik.com/team-history.php?team=GeorgetownOur defense is rated pretty much the same as it has been in the prior 3 seasons of the Ewing era, somewhere in the 100-140 range. So no noticeable improvement. No surprise, but last night was our worst game from a metric perspective, with the Navy game not far behind it. Ironically 3 pt defense isn’t the largest culprit to our struggles, but it’s actually our ability to force turnovers, where we rank 325th in the country. As a result we are forced to defend more and simply let more possessions result in attempted shots and be at the mercy of makes/misses. I know it’s been brought up before, but in the JTIII era, only once did we rank outside the Top 65. Most P5 and BE teams rarely fall outside of the Top 100 in either offensive or defensive efficiency, but here we are looking at a 3rd straight year of doing that on the defensive end, and making matters worse we probably will on the offensive side too for the first time under PE.

The whole team has to step up a notch or two, or we're going to get rolled. We need better chemistry and decision-making. Defense is a matter of heart and effort. St. Johns was hotter than a firecracker! We've got to be better and we need everybody!

Unfortunately Blair has never been a consistent shooter from range though he can score. He is shooting worse than Pickett from 3 while launching 25 more 3's than his senior counterpart. I do not think that this team's problems are perimeter shooting, particularly with the emergence of Carey. We need to run an offense with plenty of ball movement to get to the open perimeter shooter. I'll take my chances with some combination of Pickett, Blair, Carey, Berger and perhaps D. Harris if they are getting open shots. Every team has inconsistencies from deep--watched Creighton continuously launch away and miss. Recall the last St. Johns game and Nova's first half against the Hoyas. It's just that the Hoyas seem incapable of maintaining ball movement for any length of time before we devolve into iso matchups. I know Ewing is in love with feeding the ball down low to Wahab or Tim, but these guys are doubled up often and shooting 58% and 50% from in close. The ball stops--no kick out to open shooters. It's one single power move usually well guarded by the opposition. It's happening enough that you begin to wonder if it is by design. If so, why? The major problem with this team is that in his 4th year of coaching (or 19th counting assistant coaching) and with his 4th set of players, Ewing has yet to figure out how to implement an effective defense against ball movement and perimeter oriented offenses. It has not happened and there is nothing to suggest so far that it will happen. Very discouraging that a team has to shoot well every night just to be in the game. There has to be cause for hope that this can improve.

Dante was getting his pocket picked for easy turnovers bringing it up. This is why they had to switch to Carey and Blair. Dante needs to get used to Big East speed and length. They don’t want to overwhelm him and have him be a shell shocked like Carson Wentz or Adam Gase

The program definitely needs to find better athletes. They lost quite a bit of athleticism when the transfers happened last year (Mac, LeBlanc, Alexander and Gardner were all high level run/jump athletes). Jalen is very fast and athletic and Dante has really good speed and quickness, but other than that I am not sure I would say we have another high level athlete on the team this year. Sibley has good length and looks somewhat athletic, but does not seem conformable enough at this point to show that physical skill and Kobe Clark has some athleticism, but not really at a Big East level. Q is athletic and mobile for a guy his size, but his foot speed and explosiveness is not that impressive. The rest of the team is not slow or "poor" athletes, but they are just middle of the road athletes and as the game becomes faster and more wide open the need for high level athletes becomes more important. Hopefully Riley and Beard (and Aminu, fingers crossed) can add that dimension next season.
