It's almost like everything didn't happen neatly in the timeline: Rice commits TJ decides to transfer TJ starts process of finding new school TJ announces next stop (10 days after Rice announcement, 6 days after transfer announcement) Also having a former Georgetown assistant coach at USD (who also was an assistant at Princeton after Georgetown). May have helped persuade the comparison of USD to the other schools and campus life. Tough to think there's much more than a coincidental link there. Does Bahar really have any connections to Pat or GU at this point? I dunno - maybe. SD is enough of a nice draw by itself, I suppose. Still don't think those factors help allow you to choose a school in less than 2 weeks. Especially one that you didn't seem to have any previous attachment to & that's on the other coast.

Keep in mind there have been quite a few players in the portal for less than 3 days this year. But, coaches keep connected to the schools they have been at and coaching is a brotherhood as much as NBA is for players. If you go to any recruiting events (or many) you see how tightly networked the coaches are, particularly the assistants. There is a lot of trading notes and giving pointers, there are a lot of players. You can often hear coaches tell other school's coaches there is a player they should look at or talk to as the player is good and fills a need they have (this happens particularly when a school is stacked at that need). Add to that Georgetown being a tight family / network and any past assistant says hello to the current assistants and coaches. Not to say that happened here, but USD is hitting on everybody. Coaches scouting the portal will call the prior school, if they have a good connection there and ask about the player. The WCC schools (all except University of Portland have a religios affiliation) are pretty much all looking for student athletes with good academic record and a good student citizen and most don't tolerate any extra curricular mischief. WCC has decent level of play and they play Gonzaga and either St. Mary's or BYU are in or at the edge of making the Dance every year. WCC doesn't have a tv deal to speak of, but playing Gonzaga draws eyes and good players get playing time.

In this day and age with the transfer portal, recruiting/scouting has taken on an even more intense form. Guys not getting playing time at a bigger school, will be on smaller schools' radar. Guys lighting it up at smaller schools will be on major program's radar. During the season.

Seeing that TJ's father coaches a pretty high level HS program, have to think he has plenty of connections with college programs...

That and the former Georgetown assistant at USD was Director of Scouting at USC just prior so knows how to build tracking systems and has a strong network of coaches at high school and travel team level.
