There was seismic movement within the Associated Press Top 25 this week, as four teams fell to the ranks of the unranked. Kansas leapfrogged over Louisville into the top spot, as the Jayhawks romped over Wisconsin Milwaukee (95-68) and Missouri Kansas City (98-57) while the Cardinals were defeated by Texas Tech (70-57) before routing Eastern Kentucky (99-67). There are only two Big East Conference teams in the AP Top 25, with Butler moving up one slot to #17 after losing at then-#11 ranked Baylor (53-52) and defeating Southern (66-41), and Villanova moving up two slots to #18 after defeating Delaware (78-70). Seton Hall, formerly #22, fell out of the rankings after losing at Rutgers (68-48), and Xavier likewise fell out of the AP Top 25 after losing at Wake Forest (80-78). The Pirates and Musketeers, along with Marquette, DePaul and Georgetown, also received votes in this week’s poll.
The biggest gainer among last week’s ranked teams was San Diego State, which managed to climb five spots to #20 without even playing a game. The biggest losers among last week’s ranked teams were Michigan and North Carolina; the Wolverines dropped nine slots to #14 after losing at Illinois (71-62) and against then-#10 ranked Oregon (71-70, in overtime), while the Tar Heels dropped nine slots from #17 to unranked after extending their losing streak to three games with a 56-47 loss at then-#9 ranked Virginia and a 68-64 loss at home against unranked Wofford.
In addition to North Carolina, Seton Hall and Xavier, Colorado fell out of the AP Top 25 after losing against Northern Iowa (79-76) and winning at Colorado State (56-48). Now ranked, in their places, are Washington, Pennsylvania State, Texas Tech and West Virginia. The Huskies return to the rankings at #22 without having played a game, the Nittany Lions debut at #23 after wins over then-#4 ranked Maryland (76-69) and Alabama (73-71), the Red Raiders return to the rankings at #24 after defeating then-#1 ranked Louisville 70-57, and the Mountaineers debut at #25 after defeating Austin Peay (84-53) and Nicholls State (83-57).
