Allen is a really good point guard I wish I had more hands, so I could give this post four thumbs up One thing I noticed Allen doing in this game was cutting diagonally to the middle of the court with his head up and scanning for teammates, when bringing the ball up in transition. He seems comfortable taking the ball at an angle through traffic as opposed to following a straight line up the court, which seemed to be a former Hoyas' ball handling habit. Not sure if this makes for a more successful possession but it caught my eye and I will be watching for it going forward.

Taking care of business, the way it should be:
• All hail the skip pass. It’s honestly been the biggest, most notable difference in our offense. We’re making the defense work more. The first couple of games it led to open 3s. Now defenses have to come flying out at shooters, which can lead to driving lanes. Both Mac and Mosely dunks were directly off a skip pass / attack (h/t Yurt7 for screening his man for Mosely to have a clear path)
• While Mac didn’t shoot well, I didn’t have a major issue with his shot selection. 2 of the 3 pt attempts were a bit of a force, and I loathe the pull up 20 footer with 20 seconds on shot clock. Other than that, he was aggressive, attacking the lane, and was able to get paint shots or catch and shoots. No issues with those, they’ll fall most nights. It wasn’t hero ball
• Yurt7 was simply too much for them physically. I liked that we posted him up in the middle of the paint so it was much tougher to front because the baseline wasn’t there to help. I still feel most big east teams will end up sending a double.
• I’m admittedly a little harsh on our defense (and tonight will definitely help the defense numbers) but there’s still some serious gaps in the pick and roll defense a better offense will exploit. It did feel more like bad offense as opposed to good defense. There were a few times our big man running back to help after the hard hedge served as another screen on our guard. Also felt like UMBC guards did a good job maintaining their dribble during the big man hedge; as soon as our big man turns to recover you can take off and keep our guard on your hip. Just things to monitor
• I asked before the game what will happen when Pickett is on bench. For tonight the default was 4 guards. Imagine this will vary by opponent. Big East will probably force bigger lineups in those spots
Keep the momentum going!

I'm sure its been posted multiple times elsewhere, but I haven't read the board the last couple of days so I wanted to add my thoughts on UMBC. My biggest takeaway from the game was how reserved/smart Mac played. He's coming into the game averaging 26 ppg since the defections and off back to back BE POW honors, and he doesn't bring a crazy "get mine" mentality to a thumper game. He misses three good early midrange looks off of curls and basically totally tones it down for the rest of the game. Very few forced shots (and many, many opportunities to do so). Great growth from Mac. Really smart game.
Obviously Yurt was awesome and the team defense was outstanding. But huge maturity stepping stone for Mac as a leader as well. Well done Gate City!

That’s a big facet of good transition basketball going at an angle forces the defense to have to turn which gives the advantage to the offense... Allen, Mosely & Blair all do a good job of passing the ball ahead in transition also...

Noticed Blair closed out the game running point for quite a bit. Like this move to prepare him for spelling Allen or if there’s foul trouble. Gonna need some backup options there as season progresses.

I know he played less than two minutes but Chuma Azinge surely looked the part. Quick first step and got into the lane a couple times. Hope he and Jaden Robinson get some more minutes these next two games.

One nit that I had from the game is that Mac had 3 of the laziest defensive plays I have seen from him in a while. He had been doing so well. He totally lost effort for a while in the 1st half. I was hoping we were past that.

I was hoping we were past that. Yeah, I agree. There were a few times where McClung was either in a bad position on the court, or lost his man on a drive, etc. during the game. It's definitely the area where I think he can improve the most; he's got athleticism, he just needs to focus and try to stay in front of his guy better. The entire defense lost effort in the second half, but that's expected once the walk-ins come in. It wasn't just Georgetown, either. UMBC clearly had had enough by then, and they weren't necessarily giving it their all either. I am okay with that in this type of game for a short period, but this is exactly why you don't play many 250ish or worse opponents like UMBC. Games against such low-level competition really don't help in any way, though it's nice to totally dominate like that here and there.

Rewatched the game last night and was focused on what Allen was doing off ball. He really is a coach on the floor and motivator. There was a sequence in the first half where Blair got the rebound and started to push the ball up court. Allen filled the lane on the right side with Jagan trailing. Allen continues to the block and signals to Blair to hit Jagan on the wing. Allen then back picks the defender to free Jagan. Jagan's man is late in transition. Jagan blows by the defender, gets in the lane, and hits Blair for an open 3 on the wing that he buries. Really good basketball from all 3 guys.

I was hoping we were past that. Yes I didnt want to explicitly call out in my summary but agree. After he gave up a 3 and a backdoor cut, Ewing called timeout and pulled him in 1st half. It's really more off ball stuff than actual on the ball / in a stance type situations. It's not like he's just getting isolated and blown by. But he does struggle to fight through screens and loses track of his man in off ball situations. Will continue to be a big focus area for him but he received the message and gave more effort when he came back in.

He is still Mac however, so he took the opportunity to give us his first in-game reverse, twohanded, overhead dunk. (first as far as I can recall) It was a thing of beauty. And it did get him showcased on ESPN's top plays of the night. And, ok, I gave a BIG shout out YESSS!!! here at home. Maybe you heard it. His teammates seemed to like it. TBT - given the incredible highlight reels we've seen of him in HS, kid has really toned down the showboating while playing for Patrick.

Sagarin has the Hoyas at 35th, the 3rd BE team behind Butler and Nova.

I would have been interested to see how we played against Rogers. Playing a small quick guard I have no doubts Jagan and Allen could handle the defensive responsibility but I would be interested if those two could isolate and post a guy like that.

Unless I missed it, there was no replay at Cap One of the reverse slam.

I might as well add my only negative takeaway on this game. I'm still concerned that Yurt does not recognize double and triple teams quickly. Too many times he tried to force up shots in the paint instead of passing out to open wings. We have been talking about how this team is starting to play like Nova. Well Nova centers are notorious for finding open players when they are double or triple teamed. Maybe because we were so much stronger up front PE directed guys to pound the paint. But I really missed the ball movement we saw in the previous 3 games.
