I know we didn't have anyone in the women's 1500m, but this was a [Jim Carey voice] ssssssssssssssmokin' time:
... I'm probably going to be banned, and rightfully so...

Spencer did not advance to the National meet in the 1500m.
Man, that stinks for all the men and women who have competed so far. Josette is still to come in the 5000m.

Ok, finally some good news (I was about to cede update duties to Nevada forever)! Josette moves on to Nationals!

At least we saw some good news. But from the western lineup in the 5000m, it will be hard for Josette to score some points. Peopele were doubling back from the 10000m and steeplechase and running some fast times in the 5000m. The east did not have a runner under 16:00; the west had 15. Of course, the weather was probably hot and humid in Florida, while it was a bit chilly in Sacramento. But at least good for Josette and she is going to the NCAA finals in Texas.

And I hadn't realized that you caused the bad results, birdman. But looking at it, there seems to be a cause and effect manifesting itself here JK. You can sub for me anytime.

Since we have only one entry in the NCAA finals in Austin, TX, I will combine the information with the prelims.
Josette'race, which is the 2nd to the last race of the meet:
1 Dani JONES JR Colorado 2 Charlotte PROUSE JR New Mexico 3 Caroline ALCORTA SR Villanova 4 Esther GITAHI JR Alabama 5 Joyce KIMELI SO Auburn 6 Angie NICKERSON SR Southern Utah 7 Alexandra HAYS SO Columbia 8 Rachel DADAMIO JR Notre Dame 9 Josette NORRIS SR Georgetown 10 Taylor WERNER SO Arkansas 11 Abbey WHEELER JR Providence 12 Jessica PASCOE JR Florida 13 Hannah STEELMAN SO Wofford 14 Adva COHEN SO New Mexico 15 Jessica DROP JR Georgia 16 Devin CLARK JR Arkansas 17 Weini KELATI SO New Mexico 18 Makena MORLEY JR Colorado 19 Fiona O'KEEFFE JR Stanford 20 Jaci SMITH SR Air Force 21 Abby NICHOLS SO Ohio State 22 Allie OSTRANDER JR Boise State 23 Julia PATERNAIN FR Penn State 24 Bethany HASZ SO Minnesota
The favorites have to be Weini Kelati (small but fast), Allie Ostrander, and Dani Jones. Kelati and Ostrander are doubling back from earlier races. I am hoping for a top 8 finish AND beating Alcorta from Nova.

BYU advanced another four (out of twelve) in the steeplechase. It seems as if they have the most followers at the meet. Spencer is our last hope for the men. Here is his heat: 2 1 Dalton HENGST FR Ole Miss 3:43.92 3:43.92 2 2 Christopher TORPY JR Miami (Ohio) 3:44.52 3:44.26 2 3 Yared NUGUSE SO Notre Dame 3:38.32 3:38.32 2 4 Casey COMBER JR Villanova 3:42.54 3:42.54 2 5 Spencer BROWN JR Georgetown 3:39.94 3:39.94 2 6 Teddy BROWNING SO Indiana 3:43.05 3:43.05 2 7 Johnny LEVERENZ SR Butler 3:45.05 3:42.77 2 8 Joseph MURPHY SR Indiana 3:44.47 3:42.68 2 9 Nick DAHL SO Yale 3:44.58 3:44.58 2 10 Ryan MCGORTY SR William and Mary 3:44.94 3:44.67 2 11 Ben HILL JR Michigan 3:44.97 3:44.97 2 12 Allen SIEGLER JR Yale 3:45.28 3:45.28 He has the 2nd fastest seed time. He and Nuguse are the only ones under 3:40 in this heat. Again five advanced from the two heats plus two fastest times. The two times are season's best and all time best. In the unfortunate absence of Hoyas competing this weekend, it's interesting to note that all four BYU steeplers made the final. Incredible result, and awaiting the 10K to see how that plays out with their six(!) entries (they also got one runner through to the final in the 1500m).

The announcers need to stop referring to the 4x400 as "the last event on the track today." It's the last event that ESPN has the attention span to show, but that's not the same thing. /grumpy

BYU had great success in the mens 10K (I promise I'm not turning this into a BYU fan-thread, and no, I didn't convert despite being the only non-Mormon/BYU alum attorney in my previous firm for the last five years)
The race was predictably slow given the oppressively hot and humid conditions (water was offered to runners at the 150 and 300m points each lap). The Wildschutt twins(?) of Coastal Carolina took the lead early, and eventually one of the BYU guys upped the ante (forget who, they are all 5'10 and blonde). Kirwa from Liberty U really upped the pace with like 16 laps to go, and with less than 3 laps left Brandt of UCLA rushed to the lead and dropped a giant hammer that broke the race wide open. But on the last lap, Young had the lead and fought off Kigen before the turn with 200m to go, and it was all over from there. Congrats to Coach Eyestone on a great showing tonight.

One of the Wildschutt brothers (twins?) was running 1:10 laps, then he ran a 1:22 lap. Found out that he was clipped from behind and had to stop to put on his shoe. And Yound of BYU ran a 55 s last lap.

Here are the results of the NCAA 800m finals. I would like to think that if Joe were well he could have been at least 3rd or 4th. Hoppel completes the indoor/outdoor sweep.
1 Bryce HOPPEL JR Kansas 1:44.41 PB FR 2 Devin DIXON JR Texas A&M 1:44.84 3 Festus LAGAT JR Iowa State 1:45.05 PB 4 Carlton ORANGE JR Texas A&M 1:46.40 PB 5 Cooper WILLIAMS JR Indiana 1:46.45 SB 6 Michael RHOADS JR Air Force 1:46.58 PB 7 Jonah KOECH SR Texas Tech 1:47.28 8 Vincent CRISP SR Texas Tech 1:47.48
Also, the 3000mSC was won by Steven Fahy, brother of Hoya Darren Fahy. The four BYU runners could only achieve one point in 8th place. Steven won even though he fell on the last barrier. Funny, the last time I saw Darren run at the 2016 he was in a position of qualifying for the next round at the Olympic Trials in Eugene when he fell over the last or penultimate barrier. He wasn't so lucky as his brother as he did not qualify.

Ok! It's showtime for the Hoyas representative at outdoor champs! Josette Norris is set to go in the 5,000m; let's see how much of this is actually shown in the ESPN broadcast.

First and most important she scored points for the women, which had been blanked for a few years. Secondly, and almost important, she beat the Nova runner Alcorta. Thirdly, she beat Weini KELATI from New Mexico and Eritrea. Kelati was one of the stars of the West Region as she won the 5000 and 10000m at Sacramento, with little competition. This final meet Kelati won the 10000m and was considered one of the favorites. The fact that Josette beat her by over two seconds means that Josette ran away from her or outsprinted her at the end. Fourthly, she beat Allie OSTRANDER, who won the SC by about seven seconds. But of course, she won the SC an hour and a half before the 5000. And lastly, Josette was only 1.4 seconds from first and she was within seven seconds of her PR, and to run that time in a championship race and probably in hot and humid conditions was just amazing.

Neither Sami nor Cathilyn advance in the women's 800m Today Sami is running at the USATF U20 track meet in the 1500m in Miramar, FL.
