It’s the last week of the regular season for mid-major conferences, whose post-season tournaments will begin next week.
There is a Jesuit school atop the Associated Press Top 25 for the first time this season. Gonzaga moved into the #1 slot after extending their winning streak to eighteen games with wins over Pepperdine (92-64) and Brigham Young (102-68); Duke fell two slots to #3 after losing to then-ranked #8 North Carolina, 88-72, and winning at Syracuse, 75-65.
There are now as many schools from the Big East Conference ranked as there are from the Pacific 12 and Southern Conferences. Marquette moved up one spot to #10 with a 79-69 win against Butler and a 76-58 win at Providence. Villanova plummeted out of the AP Top 25, falling from #17 after extending their losing streak to three with losses at Georgetown (85-73) and at Xavier (66-54). No other Big East Conference schools received any consideration in the polls this week.
The largest gains in the polls this week were by Kansas State and Maryland, each of whom moved up seven slots. Kansas State is now ranked #16 after a 65-51 win at West Virginia and an 85-46 romp at Oklahoma State, and Maryland moved up to #17 after a 66-65 win at then-ranked #21 Iowa and a 72-62 win over Ohio State. The largest drop by a still-ranked team was by Nevada, which fell six slots to #12 after a 65-57 loss at San Diego State and a 74-68 win over California State Fresno.
There are three additions to the AP Top 25. Cincinnati returns at #23 after a 60-55 win over Central Florida and a 64-60 win at Connecticut; Wofford is ranked for the first time this season at #24 after extending their winning streak to fifteen with an 80-50 win over North Carolina Greensboro and a 72-64 win at Furman; Washington returns to the rankings at #25 after wins over Utah (62-45) and Colorado (64-55). They replace Villanova (formerly #17), as well as Louisville (formerly #18) and Iowa State (formerly #19). Louisville lost at Syracuse (69-49) and against then-ranked #3 Virginia (64-52), and Iowa State lost against Baylor (73-69) and at Texas Christian (75-72).
