But I still think James and Mac have a good chance to end up a historic Hoya backcourt; think the Pickett/LeBlanc frontcourt will be a nightmare for opponents next year, and think the recruits we have coming in will fix many of our defensive issues while getting tutored by a HOF big man. I agree with much of what you said. My one big hang up is Pickett. There's really no basis to believe he will be a nightmare for opponents. He's definitely shown some better defense this year, so that has been helpful at times, but his offense has truly been a nightmare (to use the same word). Except for Carter, who has seen limited time, Pickett is - by far - our least efficient player (82 versus..Akinjo with 98.2 is next). It's even worse in Big East play, where Pickett's efficiency is 74.1, he's shooting 18.8% from three, and his turnover rate is 27.3. In the last 7 games, his O ratings have been terrible, with only one game above 100: 27, 89, 114, 91, 28, 76, 28. I realize his defense might have some benefits for our team, and that cannot be ignored, but his offense must get better. If he doesn't get better, next year's team will struggle - or Pickett will have to sit if someone else steps up. If Yurtseven can step into Govan's shoes, there's a good chance next year's team can improve a good bit. If not, then it's unlikely barring unexpected jumps from other guys (or late recruit signings). Pickett’s offense has been the single biggest disappointment this season by a wide margin. If he had just given us the shooter he was last season, I have no doubt we would have beaten SJU, Marq and Cuse. I don’t think that can really even be debated. Let that soak in - 4-1 BE. Only losses I think are still losses with frosh Morko are LMU and at Xavier. His soph slump has absolutely crippled this team’s upside. Unfortunate that so much of our upside rested on one player, but that’s where we are right now from a talent and depth perspective. Jess and James have been what we thought they would be. Mac, Josh, Greg and Kaleb have exceeded expectations. And Pickett has disastrously underachieved. In my opinion, the others (Mourning, Jagan, Blair, Carter) don’t play enough to impact the formula materially.

Pickett will be fine.... Just needs to keep working. On Wednesday Simon shut Alexander down which really affected Creighton's flow, I'm hoping Pickett can do a similar job on Monday...

I'd go James on Zegarowski , Mac on Blalock & Pickett on Alexander... On edit: I forgot about Mintz, put Mac on Mintz & LeBlanc on Blalock...

Pickets "slump" comes down more to the fact that MacClung and Coach Akinjo are so ball dominant and then Govan is the 3rd option. Pickett is simply getting a lot less touches compared to last year. I do like the improvement from Picket in rebounding and defense. And he is really working on his handles and drives which is a weakness of his. Right now those things are hurting us but the only way to improve is to work on that. It will pay dividends in the future.

But I was thinking more defensive than offensive impact. If he can just hit a couple of threes or more a game, avoid being a zero and rebound and defend like he did against Providence, we have something.

Unfortunate that so much of our upside rested on one player, but that’s where we are right now from a talent and depth perspective. I think that's the key. Jessie has some defensive upside, IMO, but he's been inconsistent there. Jamorko is starting to realize his defensive upside, but needs to get back on track on offense. The freshmen have shown the typical freshmen play, except LeBlanc, who has been better than expected. The true core issue that Pat will need to fix over time is that you can't have this few players with the upside to be very good, and they really all can't be underclassmen except one. One of JTIII's biggest weaknesses was his inability to recruit a fundamentally deep team. Some of that was bad luck in injuries, early entry and flops, but too often he'd follow up a strong class with absolutely nothing. One of the biggest improvements Pat can do is bring in a class this year with 2-3 contributors. We haven't been functionally deep in a long time. Even the 2013 2 seed was super top heavy.

It will pay dividends in the future. For all the talk of a slump, Pickett had maybe 9 games at the end of the Big East season last year where he did better (which partially led to the higher expectations this year), out of 48 he's been on the team. Before that, he was much the same as he is this year on offense, though probably worse on defense. So, I am really beginning to wonder if it's a slump, or this is just what we are going to get.

Pickett doesn’t see the ball in the half court set because he either shoots a high rainbow three from five feet beyond the arc or does an uncomfortable high dribble drive to the hoop. The lack of a stud 3 is killing us this year. I like us at every other position. I am rooting for him to improve.

Before that, he was much the same as he is this year on offense, though probably worse on defense. So, I am really beginning to wonder if it's a slump, or this is just what we are going to get. With him I think it all comes down to his handles. They were really almost non existent last year. He puts the ball on the floor he turns it over because last year he had a very high dribble with those long arms of his. And because his handles are shaky he didn't try to drive much which makes him a pre NBA breakout Otto Porter who just sits in Otto's corner waiting for Beal or Wall to pass it to the side pocket. If he can improve his handles and drives then he can create more which will allow him to become more than just a catch and shoot spacer. So what I see this year is his dribbling has improved (lower dribble), and he's really making an effort to create, drive and and dribble more. He's successful only 50% of the time on his drives but 1) it opens up his game, and 2) it's skills development that can only happen in real game situations and will pay dividends either towards the end of this year or BET or next year. Sure right now it's costing us 4-6 points (through turnovers or failed drives/finishes) but in the long run it's good for the team and for himself (pro aspiration wise). It's really a skills development thing that guys like Pitino were good at. I felt that was the one thing that didn't happen as much with III's team cause they had to focus so much time on learning the Princeton System. There was simply less time to work on skills development. So guys like Lubeck would just remain the same for all 4 years.

The matter is heightened because most of our games have been close. We either play up/down to our level of competition. We are not far from being good.

Also he seemed to hang out on the wings a lot more then he has this year. I agree with the earlier point that a few great games maybe had us overestimate / overlook the many mediocre games he had last year.

LaBlanc is a 4 who is not a shooter, so it’s especially important that our 3 can shoot and drive.

I agree with the earlier point that a few great games maybe had us overestimate / overlook the many mediocre games he had last year. His shot wasn't this high even just a few games back. He's clearly experimenting because his shot has been off, and the new arc is absurd. I did go back and look at the stats from last year, and his shooting isn't really down as much as I had guessed. Yes, he's taking fewer shots this season in large part because Akinjo/Mac/Greg take more shots than Derrickson took, so his overall share is down. But it should be. He shoots the lowest FG% of anyone on the team who really plays. As someone said higher up in the thread, maybe he just isn't and won't ever be a very efficient offensive player. Pat should be scouring the planet for a three - because we'd be cooking with gas if we had a swingman who could contribute at all offensively. Kaleb took a turn against Marquette as a 3/4 contributor. But we need a true slash and splash three man. Right now you get neither of those things from Pickett.
