We always play them close and have done well at Hinkle. I expect Hoyas to surprise with the W.

This is the Big East game where we serve notice to the rest of the conference...that we're claiming our rightful place at the top of conference. Players have stepped up, our team has depth, defense can always improve sure...but we need to recognize that we are an inside/outside offensive juggernaut.

Like a lot of you all, I am have uncertain expectations for this team. It doesnt help when I come to this site and read all the negative nonsense from the color of the unis to Coach Ewing’s decisions, to our teams awful defense. The thing is there were alot of expectations that Patrick would be a defense first kind of coach. Reminds me of when Patrick first went into the NBA, there were all kind of expectations that he would be the next Russell, primarily defense. Did not happen, he became an offensive force, first and foremost. What I am getting at is that I think Patrick wants to outscore the opposition. I know, I know, it’s the Big East, it’s all about defense. Maybe not so much. For all the pessimism around the team hereabouts, Coach Ewing seems optimistic, especially after the Howard game. The only way Butler wins is if they shoot the lights out. Possible, but....

Of our 10 wins in only 2 of them did we score less than 80 points and through 13 games we've only held our opponent to less than 70 points 3 times. Like many of you I have no idea what we will do in the BE this year but I'm pretty sure that we will only win games in which we score a ton of points. So buckle up.

Agree completely.....and my point is that this is exactly Patrick’s plan.....”score a ton of points...” and hope it’s enough. After all, after JT3, isn’t that what we wanted? I’ll take a whole bunch of Illinois games....because we have the closers. And we may lose a few because the other team e.g. Syracuse has a better closer. But it will be fun

The only way Butler wins is if they shoot the lights out. Possible, but.... I believe Coach wants to turn the culture around and win. He also has to use the tools he has. I truly believe in his mind, he thinks this is basketball, no matter what level, the hoop is 10 feet tall and the object is to have more points than your opponent when the final horn sounds. He knows there are several ways to get there. Until LeBlanc, Pickett, Carter, Mourning and Carter prove they can score consistently on the low box, he only has Govan and guards. This maybe his entire game plan, but I don't believe it is. Wait until he has more pieces to work with. On defense, we don't have the bodies to press and defend. Not a lot of college players breaking the press and taking 3'ss. If he pressed, the last line of defense is Govan and we can't risk losing him to fouls. Next year will be completely different. Our guards can take more risks with the passing lanes and on the perimeter. The team will have rim protectors. We can't ask for much more defensively from LeBlanc this year.

The beautiful thing is that we have some depth. We also seem to be improving and gelling better as a team. Quite frankly, I like our chances in the conference this year. After checking out our competition, I predict we will have problems with the Johnnies and Creighton. The rest are beatable.

At home? Both at home and on the road?

At home? Both at home and on the road? Well, you and I both know that a win on the road in the Big East is almost enough to catapult a team into the top 25. On the road--in this league, anything is possible on any given night. The key for us is to be locked in. I am not too concerned about our three leading freshmen. Govan, Mosely, and Johnson seem to lack, sometimes, that grit and killer instinct. Similarly, we have to adopt an attitude that we are going to defend our home court. We fight, claw, and hustle--stay in the moment, play smart and we will be fine.

This year, I doubt that anybody is. Again, have not seen Marquette.

Isn't it exciting to go into this part of the schedule feeling good about our chances? Last year we entered league play with a 10-1 record and a home game against Butler, lost by 2. I feel better about this team. Anyone hear if McClung is going to play?
I don't believe we have started with a win in our conference opening since 2015-2016.

Not sure what we're going to do about Markus Howard. Akinjo is actually a capable on ball defender and if you make Howard work on defense he sometimes struggles more offensively. He’s also not a guy that I think can be contained for 40 mins. He had a bad half against Buffalo early this season and still went for over 40 in the second half. This SJU- Marquette game might give some clues as he’s been limited thus far, 4 minutes into the second half.

It starts with great defense. Butler (and most of our opponents coming up) shoot way too well to just give them wide open threes. We need to defend much better than we have to have any chance at improving on last season's Big East record.
