How long has Qudus been playing basketball? He looks to really be improving each time out.

EJ Jarvis, who is a Yale commit and about 6'7, ate him alive in that game.

EJ Jarvis, who is a Yale commit and about 6'7, ate him alive in that game. His mobility and ability to step out seemed to give him trouble. But tbf looks like Q was in foul trouble for most of the 1st half when Jarvis went for 20 (Q had 4 at half). The second foul, that he picked up early in the 1st, looks to be questionable imo. It looks somewhat even the minutes they were on the court together based on this vid, but didn't see the full game..

It looked like Wahab was a little tentative on some defensive plays because of foul trouble, but he was clearly the more polished offensive player and was a horse in the post. Give the Jarvis kid credit for making some tough contested shots but I did not see anything in the highlights that made me any less excited about Q being a really good player for the Hoyas.

I'm just saying, Jarvis isn't a high major talent, so we just need to temper our early expectations for Wahab. He doesn't really see many high school bigs with skill sets like what he'll have to learn to defend as a college player.

No doubt Q will need to adjust to the size, quickness and skill level of the bigs he plays against in the Big East next year, but he looks to have the physical tools to do that, and I am more impressed with his offensive skills he seems to be developing and how active he is on the offense end.

If you're local, Wahab is playing at 5 PM at GDS today.
They're not playing a team with any big men, though.

Flint Hill handily wins the MAC tourney with a 63-47 win over a small but very fundamentally sound Sidwell Friends team in that game at GDS yesterday. Qudus with 13 points. I speculate (but do not know/anyone out there who does?) that given the timing of this game (5PM scheduled start) vs. timing/start of the Gonzaga/Paul VI game yesterday (about 6:30 in fact) that a chunk of our coaching staff that appeared at the latter game may have gone straight from this game in NW DC to AU for the Gonzaga game (Ewing, Orr and Kirby all appeared at Gonzaga game right as it was about to/had started). Qudus has at least one and likely 2 or 3 more games to play: Flint Hill is the #4 seed in the VISAA state tournament (comprised of many private schools in Virginia in Northern Virginia, Richmond and VA beach areas). Top three seeds in the tourney above them are Paul VI, Bishop O'Connell and St. Stephen's/St. Agnes. Flint Hill will play at home Wednesday night in the quarters (but of course all of us local will be at Hoyas hosting Depaul), against the winner of #5 Episocpal (who Flint Hill beat 85-81 in early December) vs. #12 Norfolk Academy, and then would probably face Paul VI in semis in Petersburg VA Friday night (that could be a heckuva game). Brackets linked below. www.washingtonpost.com/sports/flint-hill-is-all-smiles-after-beating-sidwell-friends-for-mac-boys-basketball-title/2019/02/24/75aea7a6-3879-11e9-a06c-3ec8ed509d15_story.html?utm_term=.60bb0152a341www.visaa.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/2019-visaa-di-bbb-bracket.pdf

Again, not a great game to watch Q because Sidwell had no size at all. It was like playing against a little kid on a hoop that's too short. You hold the ball over your head, they can't reach it, and you drop it in the hoop. He has nice touch from 10 feet in. Just needs to put on some weight. He's wiry strong, but way too skinny to play in the post (he's not a stretch anything) for us right now. Just eat all summer.

Turns out the Flint Hill vs Episcopal state tournament quarter-final game tips today Wednesday, Feb 27 at 5pm at Flint Hill. So a doubleheader to see Q (in his last area game before Kenner /rest of state tourney is in Petersburg) and the 7pm Hoyas/DePaul game is possible (missing first 5 minutes or so of Hoya game in all likelihood). But who would be crazy enough to try such a thing/schlep? 😀

So Qudus's high school career ended tonight, through no fault of his, 85-83 as Episcopal beat Flint Hill in the state quarter-finals. Q had a very efficient and fundamentally sound 35 points (incl. 9 of 10 from the line/see box link below). Tied at 38 at the half (and I think Q had 18 at that point), the game turned in the 3rd quarter when Flint Hill's guards (and this will sound painfully familiar) stopped looking for him down low and stopped getting back on/playing sound defense. Down 13 at one point, Flint Hill fought back -- through some big 3s and a lot of clean up work down low by Q -- and even had the ball at half court/8 seconds to play, with a good chance to win (or at least tie). Instead, one of their guards dribbled the ball ineffectively on the perimeter and then didn't even get off a shot in time when he tried to force his way through the lane (and the shot after the buzzer was an airball anyway), as opposed to trying to feed it to Q (Episcopal has no one of comparable size/skill). I came away as impressed as I have been before this year about Q's game: stays home at both ends and plays fundamentally sound/not flashy ball (all his points where from 5 feet at most; on defense, he just held his ground/no showy swats or runs across the lane, etc.) He is exactly the kind of clay that Patrick has needed to work with (but as Problem of Dog noted, he needs some more weight/a little subject to getting pushed around). Also of particular note tonight, the guy just has the best demeanor: worked his tail off on both ends, absorbed the punishment of undersized guys doing what they could to take him out of his comfort zone, and just worked harder/didn't get outwardly mad or thrown off his game. As the saying goes, he doesn't get mad, he gets even... www.washingtonpost.com/allmetsports/2018-winter/games/boys-basketball/111475/?utm_term=.382877972261
