This is a good draw. They were 102 on KenPom last year, we were 94. On Sagarin, they were 87, we were 92. Both teams are similarly situated, so it's a very winnable game, and since it's an away game, a win would be helpful for RPI, even if Illinois turns out to be weak next year. We could definitely lose the game, too, but it wouldn't be a horrible loss, either.
I realize I took heat for emphasizing the schedule a lot (hi, guru) but this is really all we need. Games against high-major teams that aren't oppressively difficult. It's never been about schedule only the best teams; it's about avoiding the very worst teams.

Brad Underwood (Illinois coach) ran us off the court with his Ok State team in Hawaii two years ago. We of course now play a completely different style with almost none of the same players, and Underwood is at a different school. But he knows how to coach an uptempo, guard oriented style of basketball that we still have not really figured out how to defend even with Ewing replacing JTIII.

It’s not a big deal, but this isn’t really our scheduling. It’s given to us. Its too bad we couldn’t get a more high profile opponent and I’m laughing at the fact that we have to expect to play the worst team.

I just received a communication from the school regarding tickets for next season. A $50 deposit today per seat, reserves priority access seating for the coming season. Should have had a link to Ballislife. 😉

Should have had a link to Ballislife. 😉 The release mentions Villanova, Xavier, "and all other BIG EAST opponents". That's a better approach than selling "Howard, Coppin State, and plenty of other MEAC opponents"--but to be fair, the ticket office doesn't lay this egg. The coaching staff does.

What egg? The criticism of the schedule is beyond absurd and beaten to death. If you do not like the games on the schedule, do not attend. Can we at least wait until the schedule is released to go nuts over it?

Boy, I sure do wish we had played UNC, Kentucky, Arizona, and Kansas out of conference last year so we could have added those lopsided losses to our resume.

Can we at least wait until the schedule is released to go nuts over it? The last sentence raises a valid point. Query whether that overcomes what precedes it. The "don't go if you don't like it" card spoken to strong supporters of the program is pretty tiresome, as is knocking criticism of one of the all time worst schedules in college history.

Last time I checked, there was whole sea of teams between the top 10 and the bottom 50 out there. I don't know why people always treat it as a binary choice - scheduling isn't about picking the very best or the very worst. So far, it looks like the staff realizes this for 2018-2019, and it looks to be a better schedule than last season. (And yes, I realize hoyalove4ever is likely being sarcastic, but this sentiment has been stated seriously here many, many times.)

So we currently have at Illinois, at Syracuse, Richmond, and a tournament that (let's use Colorado State in this tourney from last year as a proxy for us) something like Winthrop/Tulane/Florida State level competition minimum for three games.
So...what's the issue again? We're halfway through the non-conference and we have six perfectly reasonable games. Does our RPI SOS carry over from last year now?

That tournament had teams from the ACC, American, MWC and A10. This was the inaugural year of this tournament, so the field could improve next year, along with the format. If the MWC were to be in this tournament, expect a team like New Mexico to be there. Nevada, Boise St, San Diego St, Colorado St, UNLV, Fresno St and Wyoming can't be in this tournament. In the A10 the only team possible is St. Louis. In the ACC, NC State, Pittsburgh and Georgia Tech can play in this tournament. In the American, USF and East Carolina can compete in this tournament. If this field is to step up, there are still some schools who aren't participating in an MTE. www.bloggingthebracket.com/2017/11/27/16671208/2018-19-college-basketball-early-season-tournaments-events-mte-neutral-site-showcases-thanksgivingThat's a link which has all the MTe's listed and who is competing. Teams that we could potentially play are listed in the Notable Teams Not Yet In An Exempt Event section.

Did anyone ever suggest that we should have played these types of teams? No. What we got was UNC Central, Kentucky Wesslyan, Eastern Arizona and South Kansas, and on and on. Is it too much to not want a repeat of that? And for what it's worth, it certainly looks like we won't be getting a repeat of that. So let's just let things play out.

If the schedule resembles last year’s we can all gripe. But it looks like it won’t. Yeah, we’ll probably have 2 sub-250 RPI teams and people will complain.
Here’s the thing about last year’s schedule. Setting aside the delusion that after getting a couple Big East wins the team would go 9-9 in conference and the schedule would “be its tourney death”, they finished 15-15. Articles talk about how “Patrick Ewing in his first year went 15-15”. The optics are ok. The 17-18 season is long past and the only people who remember the schedule weakness are everyone on this board, Jeff Goodman when he’s not in Latvia, and some 45 year old Syracuse fan whose response to anything Georgetown is to post a FGCU gif on Twitter. Ewing knew what he had last year. He also seems to know what he has this year. **
** Caveat that I don’t live in the DC metro so don’t feel the pain of low-major opponent home games. Only the pain of hearing LaPhonso Ellis call them on TV

Can we just let go about last year’s schedule? Last year was a developmental year for us, we we’re not making the NCAAs no matter who we scheduled and Ewing knew it. Now, a year later, the scheduling is a major step up and people are still griping about last year?

I disagree that last year's schedule was somehow an all-time worst. The schedule needs to be considered in light of what the team and program were facing at the time, and in that respect, as others have noted, there was a very reasonable basis for the schedule we had. I also have a fundamental disagreement with any fan whose temperature about the Hoyas is dependent on their schedule. My perspective is if that orange ball is bouncing and the Hoyas are playing, fans should be equally pumped up for St. Leo's in November or for Kansas in April. Fanaticism is not based on either schedule or performance.

Fanaticism is not based on either schedule or performance. The problem with your first sentence is that in the modern era, at least, various statistics show that it really was one of the worst, if not the worst, OOC schedules over the last 15 years. If you don't think it was an all-time worst, that's fine, but the facts say otherwise. On fanaticism, I agree that it means intense devotion to your team, against all opponents, in good times and bad. I love the team, have seen every game for years (including the very few that haven't been on TV that I've traveled to), and like watching them. All that being said, what fan doesn't get more excited about bigger games? I think it's fair to say you can be a devoted fan and get more excited about playing Syracuse than North Carolina A&T.

You are equating "least competitive" with "worst" and also doing so based upon statistics that are dubious at best and awful at worst. Obviously it was not a competitive schedule and was not designed to be so, but that does not mean it was one of the worst ever- far from it. Show me a team with an awful OOC record, and I will show you a team whose OOC schedule, for all practical purposes, likely was worse than ours last year. I want to see each Hoya team play the games that are good for that team, and I will always defer to the coach on that.
