Didn’t play his best tonight, but man is it nice to have a closer like James on the floor at the end of the game. A guy who can get to the line and keep the momentum going. Grinder, and played a key part in getting this W.

James seems off so far this season. Not as quick, not as confident. Maybe he is just holding g back while he tries to work everybody in,but we need more attitude from him. He clearly needs to come off the bench...

Loved our closing game strategy of having James dribbling up top and Quadus setting a screen at about 10 seconds remaining. That is just pure gold.

So great that he's that clutch from the line. His 2nd half FTs made a close game out of reach.

He wasn't shooting well last night, and I didn't remember any specific plays where he seemed to connect on a "wow" assist. But his clutch foul shooting (10-10!) put the game away (and got him to 14 points) and apparently he had 6 assists along the way. I think he'll be OK.

He played a solid game. He didn't force anything. He had pretty good defenders guarding him so he let the other players do the bulk of the offensive work.
Pretty decent team effort last night.

Truth be told, he was sensational last night. He read the court well. Saw Mac was going, saw that Pickett was in rhythm so played through them. No bad shots. Managed the court and ran every facet of Coach Ewing's offense. Prefect example, Coach Ewing started the 2nd half making a concerted effort to getting the ball to Yurt7 on the block. There was a play where Akinjo passed to Mac on the wing with Yurt7 on the box & Mac didn't get the ball into Yurt7, instead passed back to Akinjo. In the past Akinjo may have just tried to create for himself, instead he waved Mac to cut through to the other side of court and dribbled over to the wing to make the pass into Yurt7 who scored on the play.
Ackinjo has earned Coach Ewing trust, so much so he basically went to 1/4 flat sets the last 5 minutes and ran PnR off of it for Akinjo to do his thing drawing foul after foul, making every free throw to put the game away.
Akinjo has really shown tremendous maturity. Remember there were times he was calling off Coach Ewing's plays last year.
Several individual matchups wrapped into the team matchups are going to tantalizing. Akinjo's matchup with Tre Jones is must see tv. I assume Duke will put Jones on Akinjo. That matchup along with Yurt7 vs there freshman big is going to be fun. Quietly the matchup of Jagan Mosely vs. Casius Stanley is one to watch as well.

It is early morning and I haven't had my coffee. I picked up the tablet and started reading. I thought I was on the most current page for Akinjo. Want some funny stuff? Start reading page two on James like it is current. The team and our expectations have come a long way.

I realize the most important stat is a win, but he had a very nice line against Duke. He stood toe to toe with arguably one of the best PGs in the country.
I realize we can't stop these other top flight guards, but if we can contain them and Akinjo continues to work his magic and limits his turnovers, I like our chances.

Dear James,
We get it. You are a tough guy. You take no crap from your opponent. You are going to show them that size means nothing.
Now how about being a smart guy? How about not forcing one on three situations. How about taking good shots, not trying to play hero ball, forcing shots over and over when you are ice cold, turning it over trying to dribble through multiple defenders.
A real tough guy that the real way to prove how tough you are is to win. Period.

Period. good post - James is one of the best ballhandlers in the Big East and can shake nearly any defender to get into the lane, and he's got the heart of a lion. But he's got to realize that he isn't a good enough finisher to call his own number as much as he does now. If the Hoyas are going to take the next step, Akinjo is going to have to learn to be more of a facilitator and trust his teammates more often.

Tough game for James. We’ve all seen him make better decisions and take better shots. At the same time, he has used this mentality to get us out of trouble more often than not. It didn’t work today however. Today was bad.

We all appreciate the mentality to try to will the team to victory. But he has to be able to recognize that when it just isn't working, he needs to be a distributor and not a black hole.

I remember this board crucifying him after the home Marquette loss where he tried to win it himself. He improved from that game forward and almost single handedly won us the game at Marquette.
IMO he isn’t the problem. Today wasn’t his best game but we have many larger problems than James right now.

Thoughts on why his shooting has declined, assists are down and turnovers up? Coaching? Played better teams so far?

It will eventually come but will take time. There’s no reason to cover him from 3 when he can’t hit 3s. Defender can sag off him and use length to cut off passing lanes.
