The form on Mac's 3s is much improved. I would agree. He seems much less rushed when shooting threes last night. Last year, even when he was wide open, he seemed to rush his jump shot. Last night he got some open looks, set his feet, and looked really good releasing the ball. With Akinjo and Omer being the focus on a lot of other teams defense, Mac should get some open looks and hopefully his form last night holds for the entire season Most (maybe all?) of Mac's threes last night were open, "catch and shoot" shots. He did not take any 3's off the dribble, when tightly covered by the defender. He took a lot of these kind of really tough 3's last season. If Mac can improve his shot selection in this manner, he has the potential to be a very effective offensive player. he has the physical talent and skill level, he just needed to improve his shooting and his shot selection. He clearly worked hard on improving his shooting in the off season, based on reports that he worked with a big time skills/shooting coach. If the shot selection he showed last night holds up over time - he should have a very good season offensively. The defense is another story, we'll have to see how that goes with not just Mac, but with the entire team. Last night was not super encouraging on that point, although the D played well once we started pressing. But pressing is not going to be a winning base defense strategy against good teams. We have to be able to contain basic pick/roll based offenses far, far better than we did last night. Mac is not the only issue here, but he is certainly part of the challenge.

I got the sense that Mac got pulled for being out of control, more than for just questionable defense. The first benching was immediately after a failed drive into the heart of the defense ended with him tripping himself and losing the ball. Another came after a turnover, as well as some missed defensive assignments. My sense was that Mac is on a short leash when he tries to play too fast and doesn't think about things well enough. His game still lacks maturity in some ways and Ewing doesn't seem like he's going to tolerate much of that. When Mac plays hard and smart he'll stay in the game.
I agree that his 3 point shot looked better from the start. If he gets that going watch out, he'll be unguardable.

I'm mostly disappointed we didn't get any dunks. Had a friend that knew Mac from Instagram (he didn't even know he went to G-town last year until I told him). If we start performing, a lot of those Mac fans will become Hoya fans.

Mac missed the easy pass to Yurt for the dunk/oop on the second play of those highlights. Hope he starts to see it.

http://instagr.am/p/B4jnZL5gIde Re mac: Obvious change here is his shot is a lot quieter. He's basically shooting a set shot now and that should help with consistency I know this is Mac's thread but that pass fake, drive and pass to Mac for the 3 by Mosely was lovely basketball...

He has said a couple of times that he spent a lot of time reworking his shot during the offseason. You could easily see the improvement in the game. He also has said he is trying to improve defensively. Ewing is clearly emphasizing the latter along with being more under control and seeing the floor in transition. I've never heard Mac complain about that and hope that indicates he knows the intent.

Brown was quick and got some steals, but he was a terrible on-ball defender. I'd be absolutely stunned if 1) Mac left after this season; and 2) ever gets drafted, 1st or 2nd round.

Completely against this idea at this point. We need McClung to win. Benching him after only 3 games is not going to help us. It’s only mid-November.

It’s only mid-November. we need him to play defense..that’s what we need!!! Agree. Until he does, this team isn't yet capable of covering that hole he leaves on that end. Maybe things come together and that changes. But, without averaging 20+ on the regular, Mac's deficiencies on the defensive end are too glaring to cover when paired with Akinjo. And Akinjo has to start and play 30. It's not so much Mac as it is roster construction. If he were a prototypical 2, things would be different. Or, if we had a lock-down defender at the 1, it wouldn't be a concern. Right now, the team defense is bad. Really bad. That needs to be addressed ASAP and Mac is the odd man out in that regard.

I think just go back to last years starting lineup. Mosley is undersized at the 3 and can’t shoot anyway. Need to keep Mac in and let him work through his struggles.

We don’t need Mac to shoot...WE NEED HIM TO PLAY DEFENSE!!!!!!!! Last year Ewing bench Pickett for turnovers....Mac needs to be challenge in the same way.....

If Mac were replaced in starting lineup by Leblanc, then Mosley would play the other guard spot opposite Akinjo. To say Mosley can't shoot ad a defense of Mac being in the lineup is laughable at this point. You could say he isn't as big an offensive threat is factual but shooting isn't where that threat comes from.
