This will be a mental test for the Hoyas tonight. Coming off two great efforts on the road, and being rewarded by Big East scheduling with yet another road game against a less sexy opponent! BE needs to do a better job, 3 straight road games and home games? No need for that.
Anyway, can the Hoyas come out with another strong effort? And by strong effort I mean low turnovers, good shooting, attention to detail on defense, etc. - not physical effort. I expect the physical part every game from a Ewing coached team. Hoping Govan can put together back to back games and Derrickson can have a big time scoring game.

Your memory was correct, we won home at home in 2014, but this was the first year of the 10 team BEast. We have lost all games since and currently (1-7) since the reconfiguration. We did however own them for at least a 5 year stretch before that. Feast or famine. Sorry for overstating it. I think I blocked out 2014. That was the year Jabril broke his jaw (and yet was called for the foul) at the Dunk. It also seems to me that we've played them a couple of times when they've been on the bubble so that they punched their ticket to the NCAAs at our expense. For some reason our losing record against them irritates them more than that of Xavier, Creighton, etc. Probably because we did own them for a stretch there.

Yeah, I thought that we had a six game losing streak against them but at least put up one W against them since the new version of league started. Still pathetic either way and it was so frustrating that during the previous two seasons there seemed to be no adjustments to make us at least competitive against the Friars. The Friars have owned the Hoyas the same way Villanova has since the New Big East formed. I can understand Villanova but Providence? That was more about effort and toughness.

I could always get a barometer of the team pre 2014 when we played the West Virginia & Cincinnati's of the world. All about effort & toughness, hopefully Ewing can change our fortune in that department.

If we can go on the road and win this one against Provvy and then somehow finish the season 3-3 against a very tough remaining schedule, we get to 7-11 in the league, which I think probably exceeds most expectations.
If that be our regular season outcome, I think every team, outside of Villanova, will be pretty nervous to play us in the BE tournament.
Would be real fun to go on a surprise 3-game run in March in NYC as a preview for what's coming next season!
Let's keep the positive MO going! Keep it up Coach Ewing - you are doing great things!

Trying to keep expectations in check, one ugly loss could bring us all crashing back to earth. But definitely feeling more optimistic going forward.

Trying to keep expectations in check, one ugly loss could bring us all crashing back to earth. But definitely feeling more optimistic going forward. Agreed. To put it in some perspective, we've lost 5 of our last 6 (including a loss to DePaul). Our only wins are against St. John's and DePaul. We've been ahead of at least three opponents in the second quarter and failed to close. It's true we played better overall against Xavier, and if that continues, we can definitely win some games against better competition. But right now, I don't think we are making anyone remotely nervous about playing us in the regular season or BET.

Fair points. A clunker tonight and a weak 1-6/2-5 finish in the last 7 would bring most of us back down to "disappointing season" analysis territory.
But let's stay optimistic and applaud the advances. No sense in being negative in a re-building year with so much progress in last 4 games from Pickett and Blair.
If we can keep up the development, I think we have a legit shot to grab 3-4 wins in last 7 with 2 games against Provvy, plus Butler, SH, and Marquette (not counting Xavier and Nova).
We have lost 3 OT games, 2 of which could have been victories with slightly better decision making in the final minute.

Providence is a good team. They have big physical guards that pressure you and try to bully you for 40 minutes. This game is going to be really tough, they destroyed us last year with the same team.

Providence is a good team that is always very well prepared, but if the Hoyas can stay focused and not allow any big runs against them tonight they should be in this game right till the end and maybe the ball starts to bounce their way in a close one. Need to limit the turnovers and not allow a bunch of open 3's. Providence is a good, not great, shooting team so as long as you can stay connected and contest shots the Friars should not go crazy making threes tonight. Cooley seemed to have JT3's number the last few years, so it will be interesting to see how Coach Ewing fares tonight.

Not the same team. Providence is missing starting F Holt, who scored 17 and 11 points vs GU last year. Out for the season...

On the contrary, while no one would be SCARED to play us, I can think of at least 2 teams - who just struggled mightily to edge us out on their home floors - who would be quite nervous to play us at MSG.

When teams have been physical with our ball handlers and applied pressure, we've struggled. We'll see how it goes...

How did Mulmore get a 2nd foul so quickly?

Scoring wise the back court of Mulmore & Johnson are picking up exactly where they left off vs Xavier
