While this does make me feel better about the whole Williams recruitment and how it all went down, it also makes me feel worse that Ewing didn't do better with initially putting together his staff like Howard apparently has. A guy like Martelli would have been a fantastic hire and I'm sure beyond even helping to land a guy like Williams, he's probably also had a positive impact on player development and in-game X's and O's. The NYTimes article this week made it pretty clear that Louis Orr is our Martelli. Ewing gives him a lot of credit for the coaching success he has had at Georgetown. www.nytimes.com/2020/01/03/sports/ncaabasketball/college-basketball-assistant-coaches.htmlWait did I fall into a coma and miss this “success”?

We have the following: 10-time NBA All-Star Coach TAC (with pro teams practicing) Big East Jordan Brand DMV area Top-10 basketball budget Capital One Center Yet, we can’t land/keep top recruits, finish in the top third of the conference and make the NCAAs. These kids do not know Patrick Ewing. They barely saw Juwan Howard play. Pro teams practice at schools all over. It's not a draw. These kids are already friends with pros and rappers on social media, so seeing them in person doesn't wow anyone anymore. The Big East is a good conference, but its quality outranks its perception, particularly outside of the Northeast. Every school has a big time shoe contract. Jordan Brand doesn't draw kids moreso than just a regular Nike deal. Maybe even less so. We may have a nice basketball budget, but I wouldn't bet kids get that impression. TAC is nice, but is it one of the top 10 facilities in the country, when you consider the auxiliary dorm/strength/nutrition facilities that other schools have? Cap One is the single worst venue for basketball on the planet. It is truly awful. 100% spot on accurate.

Here’s the quote:
“Louis Orr has been an integral part of our program and our success,” Ewing said. “All of my assistants have been in college sports for a lot of years, while my background is more in the N.B.A. So I can lean on them for the things that I need to learn about the college game, like recruiting, even though on the court we run more N.B.A.-type stuff.”

That has become a core principle of the NBA and there are multi year NBA vets that never shot 3’s before who now it’s a big part of their game. He also most recently coached for a team that shot a lot of 3’s and let their big shoot. He really seems to hate that’s how the game has gone though.

Well, if our big men can't shoot threes, they probably shouldn't shoot threes. This may be a matter of personnel this year, rather than philosophy. Jesse took 114 threes last year, which is a decent amount. Yurt is 1/7 this year (small sample) and Wahab almost broke the backboard the other night with a launch.

When hiring people, you want a person that is first described as having a specific skill and not one that’s just a “nice guy”

Williams is getting recruited over already, even within his own class - coach's son plus 5*s Greg Brown and Josh Christopher... "Jace Howard, the son of Juwan Howard, is planning on committing later this month. Unless something changes, look for the versatile forward to commit to his father and the Wolverines. Next, they will bring Greg Brown to campus on Feb. 7 for his final official visit. Michigan’s involvement with him was not widely known, and while the Wolverines have a small chance, it is still difficult to see Brown suiting up for them next year. Memphis and Texas have a better shot. However, I'm betting that Josh Christopher, a five-star guard from California, chooses Michigan. I changed my FutureCast selection for Christopher over the weekend, thanks to various sources that I have spoken with regarding his recruitment. Nothing is imminent and Arizona State, Missouri and UCLA remain in the way, but Michigan has the momentum, which could create a six-man class and one of the best groups ever assembled in Ann Arbor." basketballrecruiting.rivals.com/news/twitter-tuesday-michigan-will-jeffress-jalen-johnson-more

Probably true, but do we think some of our more recently successful Big East brethren are dirty? Look where our guys went. Will Wade LSU = $$$$ Shawn Miller Arizona = $$$$ I don't dispute that either Wade or Miller are dirty, but I don't think either LeBlanc or Akinjko voluntarily left Georgetown to go to those schools because of money.

Michigan is over the scholarship limit by 1 already, without having any sure-fire underclassmen pro prospects on the roster. Austin Davis will probably leave as a grad transfer but Juniors Brooks & Livers are 2 of their better players. Add to that Howard recruited the frosh class, it should be interesting how he creates room for others.

So how do we think Howard will manage this. His son is non-scholarship I assume.
Either way if I am Terrence I am probably not happy.

I don't know coach Howard personally, but I am putting heavy odds on the fact that he disclosed to Williams all of the things we are seeing now, as part of his recruitment... Not doing so seems absurd Ship has sailed, kid is not coming here - I wish he did but any time we spend gloating/speculating/rooting against kids that choose to go elsewhere (See Seventh Woods, Whitney, Baker etc just recently) is time wasted and a knock on the quality of our fan base... Not aiming this at you directly Metaphor, just feel like we can collectively do better than this...
