This will be an important game for GU. Blowing out SC Upstate is what we are supposed to do. The pressing and running was new and effective - against an undermanned opponent. Hey, we were all delighted to see it. Portends well. But performing at top level against a pretty good team as UMD is this year? Another level. If we play that style and beat UMD, GU will have made a major statement about who is the top dog in the DC area. Time to reassert the GU Brand!
The team seemed so excited and energized yesterday. Last year we came out flat as a pancake in too many games, especially early. I don't think these kids -- with 24 year old Rodney Pryor on the team and determined to make the most of his last chance at major college success -- are likely to suffer the same fate. Furthermore, coming out in last year's O - heavily dependent on DSR and his slow-paced offensive tempo, and our far less aggressive D were not conducive to generating energy. Starting the game in a full court press? Running at every opportunity? Those two factors guarantee the Hoyas will be operating at a really high energy level right from the get go.
Clamping down on 3 pt shooters and Defensive rebounding are two areas in which we need improvement.
LOVE the new guys - Pryor is a star, Mosely was a steadying presence at the point. He looked solid out there, poised. No TOs. How will he look vs Melo? We will see. Mulmore -- exciting, but not really enough minutes to judge as yet. Agau still recovering. Hope to see him do well v. UMD.
Net net? Very impressive opening game that showcased an exciting new style from the old dog, JT3. Optimism surrounds the program. Gotta build on that. Hence a VERY important game. Must win? Not really, but a confidence and momentum builder - for credibilty, fan appreciation, putting the media on notice and getting off to a solid start to the season. Here's hoping!

Get this win and I think we should be ranked. Need a better rebounding game from our bigs if it's gonna happen though. Without checking, this week GU will play the most ranked teams in a one-week span in its history. If we only lose once this week, we will be ranked.

There's no excuse not to win this game. I get that they are ranked and may be perceived as favorites by some, but that's a team in transition. We have a big edge in experience and motivation. If you saw them play AU, they struggled a bit. They have talented young freshman aside from Melo but they aren't up to speed yet and their big men are not good. Our weaknesses inside won't get exposed until later on. I think we should win by 10. We will not have a weakness inside once Bradley comes back. It will be less pressure to perform for Govan overall.

Yesterday was very encouraging. However Maryland is a major step up in class and its guards are clearly superior and may not be phased as much by our press. Half-court defense and post play must improve. No way to judge off of one game but from what I saw, the Terps did not shoot well from distance against American and did not defend their Princeton-style offense well. Govan and Agau are critical on the boards. I hope that there will be a large Hoya turnout even for an early game. It would be a shame if this turned out to be another 50/50 gate.

Jagan Mosely tweeted that his grandmother passed away yesterday. It's a tough blow. He may not be available Tuesday. And, if he does play, it's liable to affect him. Regardless, peace to his family.

Very sorry to hear that. Always tough. And yes, thoughts and prayers for Jagen and family. I imagine he must have been pretty close to his grandmother if he's tweeting about it. Hope support from team and staff will be helpful to him. As for when he'll play? Take whatever time you need and come back when you are ready.

This is a huge game , in my opinion. Twerps are the big dog in town right now, after being a notch below us for a few years. This can be a boost in recruiting, especially if we actually get out and run a bit. I think the Hoyas have more talent, top to bottom. I also hope that Pryor brings something that has been missing for awhile...an alpha dog with real talent to score from outside or by slashing. Jabril was that alpha dog, but not the talent needed to dominate. I do worry about missing Hayes...love Jessie's ability to score, but not his defense or passing. Think we can win this by 10.

Need to improve getting back after press break as well as defensive rebounding. Both were flawed against USC Upstate. Trimble & Cowan aren't going to have the same types of issues with the press but it can still be effective at speeding up the game which I think benefits us. Good early test for us.

I'm reminded of Big John's comment about Patrick covering the back of the press better than any big man he ever had. Govan and Agau did not distinguish themselves in that regard Saturday.

Teams would break presses against Ewing's teams and have 2 on 1s to the hoop -- and many, many times would pull the ball out and reset, rather than challenge. That's how intimidating he was guarding the hoop in the press. Was awesome to watch.

I haven't watched the first half of Saturday's game yet, so take this with a nod to the fact that I saw the half with an eight minute span where we scored about six points...
Maryland's not the team they were last year, but it's a great test for us in the vein of the USC-Upstate coach's comments. I know a few people were annoyed with his seemingly doubting comments, but he's right. The pressing, running style works great to blow out crappy opponents, but if you aren't talented enough and don't execute well enough, those blowouts dry up quickly. If a team doesn't turn the ball over and gets back on D, you have to play more half court offense.
In the second half, that half court offense wasn't reliable.
In addition, the rebounding was pretty terrible and our centers, in particular, couldn't defend without fouling. Will those weaknesses crush us again when we don't have the fast break points to cover it up?
That said, I'm excited to watch the first half tonight and see if the defense and offense was just so good it'll likely work against better teams, and I may order a Jagan Moseley jersey right now. Big win, but Maryland will answer a lot of the questions above for playing against major conference teams. And then next week, we'll likely get the answer against pretty darn good teams.

If a team doesn't turn the ball over and gets back on D, you have to play more half court offense. I agree. Count me among those who are skeptical we can use the press effectively against a better team. USC Upstate clearly was not prepared and/or talented enough to deal with our press. And that's great, and definitely a tactic we should employ against poor teams. What concerned me is that in several instances, USC did beat the press and got relatively easy layups. And there were multiple instances where our guys were not where they were supposed to be on defense, either. So, I know many people here want us to press everybody, but I am just not certain it will work against a better team like Maryland. If USC Upstate can beat the press on occasion, you'd expect a team like Maryland to do it more effectively, especially since they will now go into the game expecting it. I have always been a skeptic of the "pressure all game" mentality, though I do think our team is athletic enough to do it more than in past years. I am just not sure it'll be good enough against better teams.

I am just not sure it'll be good enough against better teams. I think pressing can be an effective tactic. I think running any time you can is smart. And I think we'll probably be good enough at the latter that it should be a key aspect of the team. Like you, it's hard to tell on the former until you see it. I think part of our team is well suited -- Moseley, Mulmore, Pryor, Peak, Kaleb. And the rest is not so much. But it can't be the only aspect. Running can't be the complete offense. And that's what I think we still have to wait and see -- when the fast break isn't 50%+ of the team's possessions, can it still score and defend?

Bummer that Maryland just dropped out of the AP rankings. Our victory will miss that extra coverage that the Top 25 games get.

Maryland turned the ball over 19 times against American to only 7 assists. Why are we assuming they'll handle the press better just because of the name on the front of the jersey? Cowan had 4 turnovers and no assists. Why are we assuming he'll be able to break the press easily?
Yes they know it's coming now, but they still will only have 2 or so practices to prepare. Maryland turned it over on 29% of their possessions. They also were 233rd in offensive TO% last year so its been a problem for them before.
Maryland did great on the boards but don't have any good low post scorers. Dodd isn't good and Cekovsky is injured.
