Actually the first FOUR baskets for UNC were all on goaltends by Patrick, as well as a fifth later in the half. Sent a powerful message that came oh so close to bringing us the title. Except Georgetown lost by 1 point. Who knows what would have happened without the goaltending, but if someone on our team did that in 2016-2017 and we lost a championship by 1 point as a result, I'd be pretty annoyed.

Certainly true, but it also affected everything UNC did inside the rest of the game, whether it was Perkins or Worthy, or a guard going to the rim but looking over his shoulder for Patrick.

Not to mention that UNC was gifted a free throw when that fat turd Chris Brust traveled and the got a bs foul call against Eddie Spriggs. Not that I am still bitter or anything...

It was coach mandated strategy. JT told Patrick to block everything and don't worry about goaltending.

Really only one of those shots had to be a miss and we might have won the championship. But this was 30+ years ago. I doubt anything like that would happen today anyway.

I think Big John discusses in one of the recent documentaries- perhaps the one about Patrick and Zo. He basically said, guys like Worthy, Perkins, Jordan, etc. don't miss many of those shots, so what the heck, he told Patrick to go out there and block as many as possible. Hard for me to disagree, and impossible to say that if Patrick does not go for those blocks that the Hoyas win. Obviously, one different play could change the whole game for better or worse.
Also, at least two, and perhaps three, of Patrick's blocks were NOT goaltending...refs got whistle happy after the first couple.

My recollection is that UNC's first three or four attempts were all pretty easy shots in the lane, and were pretty good GT calls by the refs. I could re-watch the video I made of the game to be sure, except I threw out my Betamax VCR about 25 years ago.

I've watched that game a few times over the years, always turning off the tv for the final 10 seconds or so.
