I think it's pretty obvious that, no the students don't give one iota of a crap about this year's team. The more appropriate question to be asking right now is: Should GU students care?

Man, last night was about as awful as I've seen it. One side of the student section couldn't even get the first row filled up. Yeah sure boohoo Wednesday night late game whatever but we should be able to get a solid four or five rows filled up every game even if it were against a borderline d2 game in the non-con.
Games like last night need to be played in McDonough. Theres no reason for us to be paying so much to the Verizon Center for like fifteen kids to uber to the game and leave at half-time.

Last night was a conference game, not some December game against a "borderline d2" team. "Games like last night"--a bad Hoya team playing an unremarkable (but better than the Hoyas) team in mid-February, shouldn't be (and haven't been) a regular thing. Is the AD supposed to decide midseason "the team sucks this year, let's move the rest of the BE games to McDonough"?

Games like last night need to be played in McDonough. Theres no reason for us to be paying so much to the Verizon Center for like fifteen kids to uber to the game and leave at half-time. Repeating: 1. Big East games must be played in arenas of more than 6,000 seats. McD does not qualify. 2. Only four DC-area facilities exist of more than 6,000 seats: - Verizon Center (20,500), Washington DC
- Xfinity Center (17,900), College Park MD (It's occupied.)
- EagleBank Arena (10,000), Fairfax, VA (George Mason's home court, 21.3 miles west, no Metro access)
- DC Armory (9,000), Washington DC. (10 miles east, built in 1948, now decrepit, no air conditioning in the building.)

So there it is. We are in Verizon for the foreseeable future. It is incumbent upon the Athletic Department to place a product on the floor that will place some asses in the seats of an oversized (for us) venue.
As to whether the students should or do care, the answer is they should care and hopefully will demonstrate it better as the product improves.

Does Carnesseca Gym at St. Johns have 6000 seats? They have played some BE games there.

Per its webpage Carnesecca holds 5,602. Close to 6 K and much more than the 4K tops we could cram into McDonough

Finish the multi-sport and football field, you then have room to place athletes while construction is happening. Renovate Yates. Once that is done, knock out McD offices and drop court down, BOOM, 7500 and a great gameday experience. Until then, suffer. Here we come in ....2050.

Does Carnesseca Gym at St. Johns have 6000 seats? They have played some BE games there. Nope - 5,602 When the Big East made its 6,000 seat rule, St. John's basically made up the 6,009 number, so they're great-grandfathered in. The active on-campus facilities which are effectively barred from games would be: 1. McDonough 2. Walsh Gym (Seton Hall) 3. Alumni Gym (Providence) 3. Al McGuire Center at Marquette (photo below) 4. McGrath-Phillips Arena (DePaul) 5. Ryan Athletic Center (Creighton)

During my junior and senior years in 2007 and 2008, if I remember correctly, around 1/3 of the student body had season tickets. And even more came to games. Why? We won.
And why SHOULD students care anymore? I don't remember a time in my life when I have been THIS disinterested in my team, and in college basketball in general.

That's a good point about lack of interest in college bball in general. I am in the same boat, personally. Don't know whether that is mostly a function of the Hoyas' suckiness this year, but I find a lot of the game unwatchable lately.

Our brand of basketball is virtually unwatchable right now ...can't blame the students here.

Don't know whether that is mostly a function of the Hoyas' suckiness this year, but I find a lot of the game unwatchable lately. Regarding college basketball in general, I've historically focused on Big East games but I've found them generally brutal to watch this year. The quality of play, athleticism, foul calls(!)...just terrible. ACC or Big 12 games have been better...probably in part because I'm only watching top match ups with better teams, but generally the play is much better quality. The games seem to get called differently too...I watched the tractor pull that was UVA vs. Louisville a couple of weeks ago and I think Peak would have fouled out if he was in the stands. Yet, they let them play. My sample size might be too small (I don't get to watch as many games as I'd like), but is the freedom of movement nonsense ruining every game or just the ones in the Big East? Or does the Big East just have more teams (Butler, Creighton and yes, No. 1 Nova, for instance) that constantly run plays and have players looking for calls? It is just unwatchable. The first game I saw Brunson play he did a whiplash head jerk move on a drive when no one touched him. And I prayed that he blew up this year and was one and done because I can't deal with that bull for 3 more years. Big East be damned, I'll root for a 16 seed against Nova. hm

So I ask you, is the fact that this "brand of basketball is virtually unwatchable" recognized and/or acknowledged by anyone directly involved with the basketball program?

But I can see how the distance to Verizon and the lack of affordable, easy transportation plus the time spent getting to and from games may be keeping students away Speaking for the alumni of the 1980's and 1990's...well... 1. Verizon Center is all of three miles from campus. Three. Forty minutes by foot, 20 minutes by car, seven minutes via Metrorail out of Rosslyn. This isn't sitting in a rickety school bus ride on the road to Landover, without a restaurant or gas station within miles of the arena. 2. Lack of affordable transportation? Metrorail is $1.75 off-peak. Uber is less than $7.00. Cab fare, guessing under $10.00. 3. Time spent getting to games? Not an issue. Short, three word answer: They. Don't. Care. Agreed. Travel time or cost is nonsense. Win and put a good product on the floor and people will show up. Even millenials.

I'm watching the end of the Minnesota-Maryland game, at Minnesota. The Gophers have been terrible this year (no big 10 wins before tonight) - but the arena is still packed with a deeply engaged crowd going nuts as they upset Maryland. Such a far cry from our experience during a bad season this year.
Of course there are huge differences between U of Minnesota and Georgetown on an institutional level - but the dramatic difference in crowd size/energy is pretty amazing. Minnesota stormed the court after the win. I doubt we'll have nearly enough students in the crowd on saturday to storm the court if we beat Xavier! The courtside alums/fans would have to join in to bolster the crowd, and that still probably would not be enough people for a decent court storming.
Also - the down side to playing maryland, syracuse, and UConn is that it helps our NCAA tournament chances when they win. So it is kind of freeing for us to be eliminated from NCAA consideration (absent a BE tournament win) - we can now freely root against those three teams. So it was fun to see Maryland cough up their second game in a row. Maryland had won a ridiculous number of close games over the past two seasons i think they are "reverting to the mean" in terms of close game luck. Hopefully that results in a quick NCAA tournament ouster. Maryland has a lot of talent, but they just don't seem to quite be in synch a lot of the time, performing a bit below their talent level. But since they have managed to win so many close games, they give the impression of being a top team. I won't be surprised at all if they lose their first or second NCAA tournament game.

Was just about to post the same thing. I totally get the fan apathy this year (and the last few), and we are a small school without a huge alumni base. But Minnesota was 6-19 coming into the game, and they have very little good history in any sport. But my God, that is a different universe in terms of crowd support. Wish we had anything like it.
