I was just watching some of the video from the Monmouth/Notre Dame game and let me just say that this Justin Robinson guy plays SUPER annoying. Literally flops anytime he gets scraped and the refs always call it since he's so much smaller than everyone else. I'm not entirely sure their team can do anything besides shoot the three and force free throws...

Yes, but Monmouth is the classic team we face in the tourney and lose to. Think Ohio U. Let's see if we can right this.

We cannot do that.

(Blood pressure rises due to flashbacks of Ohio debacle)...(considers putting head through computer screen)...(how many hours until the game tonight)... Does anyone think that JTIII purposefully scheduled teams like Monmouth during the OOC just because of games like the ones against Ohio, FGCU, etc??? Or is that too far fetched?

I think it's a combination. Generally, I do think John Thompson III tries to schedule mid-major type teams that are going to be near the top of their conference. However, my feeling is that when Monmouth was scheduled, it wasn't with the intent of challenging to team to this degree during finals week. This is the best Monmouth has played in the last several years - and it's not even close. Monmouth's KenPom rankings: 2016: 80 2015: 182 2014: 272 2013: 313 2012: 265 2011: 278 2010: 307 2009: 325 Their ranking of 162 in 2006 was the highest since KenPom started tracking in 2002.

Not far-fetched at all. The Elephant in the Room is the NCAA flame-outs, and he has gotta be aware of that. I assume he is at least partially trying to build his schedule to help survive past round 2 of the Tournament. With 3 losses already, though, it makes qualifying for the Tournament a bit dicier.

Starting to get annoying. If anyone wants to embed this properly so they don't get the views go ahead. I am on a mobile.

That game he didn't shoot the ball well and made his impact getting into the lane and drawing fouls. If we let them, monmouth will destroy us in transition. They finish well. Wasn't entirely impressed with their half court offense (outside of robinson). Stewart is money from 3 and Seaborn is a fairly good penetrator.

Yeah, Monmouth might have done us a favor with this bench nonsense and their good start. This is the week we are always sleepwalking, and you have to think they have our attention. I think this was intended as a finals week game like you said.

The best way to handle the nonsense is to get to a 30 point lead in the first half and not give it up. Easier said than done.

Another key for us would be to hit our free throws. Despite some late game misses, we are currently 28th in the nation in free throw percentage and Monmouth is 21st in the nation in free throw percentage defense. In their three big wins - USC, UCLA and Notre Dame - their opponents missed a total of 16 more free throws than they would have been expected to miss if they had made their normal percentage of free throws.

FT defense is essentially a total luck category, since there's virtually nothing a team can do to affect whether free throws are made. I suppose they can make a difference at the margins (whether you tend to foul good free throw shooters versus bad ones), but it's largely a random stat. It doesn't away your point, though, which is that we need to make our own free throws.

My implicit point is that if UCLA and ND had made a standard amount of free throws this game would appear less terrifying.

I'll still fall back on the other 999 examples to support my argument. At the end of the day, no matter what happens tonight, you can recruit all the 5'8" PGs you like. [desperately hoping our length bothers the midget...hahahaha]
