The meet will be held at Villanova on this Friday and Saturday (May 8 and 9). Too bad it is not just track. But it is track and field, and we do not pick up a lot of points on the field. The outdoor meet is harder for us to win than the indoor meet, because of the addition of more field events (think javelin) and the lack of some of the middle distance races that they have indoors (e.g., 600m). Given that, we will be competitive in the track portion. The addition of the 3000m steeplechase to the outdoor meet helps the men as we are STEEPLE University. We may sweep the first four places in this event with Fahy, Gil, Howard, and Carpenter.

Apparently Matt Stainbrook is joining the Xavier Field team as a discus and shot put thrower. Apparently their only male field athlete to help them try and pick up some points. We should've tried to get Josh or some other big guys to help the team out a bit.

We should've tried to get Josh or some other big guys to help the team out a bit. It would be great if something like that worked out, but would require a pretty extensive background in the event before college (if a coach would ever let a player on a high-level team do both in the first place). A lot of the field events, especially shot put and discus, require a lot of precise technique; trying to muscle a 16 pound shot or torquing your shoulder improperly for a discus throw is a great way to end a career. A fan can dream though!

And I'd only recommend it for a player in Stainbrook's situation where he's done with college Basketball.

In all the field events both men and women the Hoyas have a total of 3 athletes, 2 men doing the LJ and TJ, and one woman doing the same events. I am hoping that the Hoyas have some good results in the running events; maybe they will finish in the top half of the field.

I bet if they put up a flyer in Yates they could get some people to come out and be willing to do some events. Heck I would've shown up if I had known there was no one doing this stuff when I was in college. No chance I would be competitive, but at least we'd have someone trying. I wonder if I'd be eligible if I got into residency at Georgetown?

In three meets as a college shot putter, Stainbrook has improved from 10.81 meters on 4/17 to 11.57 on 4/25 to 12.11 on 5/2.

I wonder if I'd be eligible if I got into residency at Georgetown? I remember when I was at Georgetown a long time ago, the track coach asked me to try out for the high jump. I never had done the event ever, but the coach had seen me playing basketball at McD and liked my vertical leap (I would say about three feet). So he had HJ standards and a "pit" placed in McD, and I did my try out. It was a total flop (definitely before the flop was invented as the main way to do the event these days) as I could jump high, but did not have any technique to get myself over the bar. Sigh! My 3 ft vertical is now 3 inches on a good day.

The first track event today is the 1500m prelims. The women have two heats, but the men have 14 men that they are running in one heat, and I assume the men will not have a prelim, but go straight to the final; they will probably run the final tomorrow. The two Hoyas in the 1500m are Amos Bartelsmeyer with a seed time of 3:43.82 and Cole Williams with a seed time of 3:42.05. Those are the fastest seeds except the two from Villanova. Additional one Nova has a faster seed time than Amos. The fastest seed is Williamsz with a z.

Four of our five runners in the women's 800m made it to the finals, so half the field is from Georgetown. Curiously enough, the only Hoya not to make the final is Sabrina Southerland, who has the meet record of 2:04.21. Sabrina is getting to be like Chelsea Cox, great one meet, not so great another. Sabrina ran 2:16.77 today. The four who did make it are as follows:
Heather Martin 2:05.4 Kristin Walsh 2:08.66 Emma Keenan 2:08.77 Piper Donaghu 2:10.05
I am particularly proud of Kristin, who made quite a leap by breaking 2:10 in a recent meet. She used to be in the 2:14 range, now it looks as if she is a consistent sub-2:10 800m runner. Also, Heather has made great strides this year. It is good to see Emma back and running well, and Piper, as a freshman, continues to run well.
