Hoping for a great season but a note of caution: the team competing for playing time has 3 freshmen, 5 sophomores, 2 juniors (one of whom has barely played and the other with very limited minutes) and 2 seniors (one of whom has barely played). Young is an understatement! Be prepared for some growing pains, particularly at the outset.

I agree this team may have some growing pains, especially with the tough early season games on the schedule. However, I think it may be a tad overblown. The group of sophs. got a lot of PT last year. Add in Peak's experience with Team USA plus the Italy trip and you have an experienced 2nd year group, not to mention a very talented group to begin with. I also think having DSR's leadership is huge. This being his 2nd full year running the point, he'll be much more comfortable getting others involved as well as getting his own shot.

That used to be considered a young team, but I'm not so sure these days, with the most talented guys skipping out after 1 or 2 years. I actually think we have a pretty nice mix this upcoming year, although on the "youngish" side.

We need to remember that the sophomores played a ton last year, so they're far more experienced than your typical sophomore class would be. I think it's quite likely that the vast majority of the time we have four guys on the court that played meaningful minutes last year (every spot but the five). Sure, there are going to be times that Derrickson is on the floor together with either Hayes or Govan , and there may be times that Johnson gets some meaningful minutes, but that won't be the majority of the time, and even then it's still only two spots out of five. Also: Agau is "new," but by the time he's eligible, he'll have practiced with the guys for a long time. We have concerns -- the five position is certainly one -- but I don't think our overall experience level should be.

Our early big time opponents will mainly be younger too. Cuse will be very young. Duke will be very young. Wisconsin will be inexperienced but I think Maryland brings back a nice group of upper classmen and transfers/freshman. Carter/Sulaimon is a nice addition along with the Stone kid. I like our chances early to pick up some big OOC W's as White, Campbell, Peak, Copeland, & DSR all have played major minutes. Hayes, Agau, Mourning & the freshman all will have some bumps.

Leak? Are we doing that? Is it Leak and Sivera and Tampbell as our rotating backcourt?

Leak is our new secret weapon. No one is going to know what hits them.

I wish she would stop calling him Leak. It's an objectively terrible nickname. The only players I do that is with Justin and Melvin Upton. As a Padres fan, I get a tremendous amount of joy out of saying 'Jupton' and 'Mupton.' Especially since Mupton is such a Mupton.

That's horrible if its an attempt at a nickname

That smells a lot more like an idiot than a nickname.

We're developing quite the Misspelled/Pronounced All-Star Team of this millennium between Rivera-Smith, Tror/Trout-Wick/Wig, Leak, Shomnick, and Michael Hopkins. Yet somehow we managed to make it through four years of Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje relatively unscathed--the worst people seemed to do was spell his first name like the sandwich once in a while.

I think Burton changed his name from Nat to Nate and back 57 times during his GU career.

Not the first time ESPN has made a mistake and called LJ "Leak". I recall watching high school games of ESPN with Paul White playing and the announcers made the same error when referring to Paul's future teammates. It's not a nickname.

To me this is an even bigger revelation than all the program excitement regarding Govan. It is a small sample size in terms of the pickup games Rothstein was able to watch, but I've been hearing myself from other corners that Derrickson has been really impressive in these pickups and that he can really, really shoot the rock. But if he ends up being better at long distance shooting than guys like Copeland, Paul White, Campbell and an improved LJ (heck, throw in Cameron too) then this team, which in my opinion was already on track to be III's best offensive team, will be a headache to guard.

Agree with offensive potential but, as stated in another post, I still have rim D and rebounding concerns. These early tough games may give us a little idea of what is in store when we get to BE games.

These early tough games may give us a little idea of what is in store when we get to BE games. ahoya, Duke couldn't defend in the paint last year but they got enough stops and out scored teams. We have good perimeter defenders and great scorers. That's a recipe championship teams have used in the past.
