JT Jr used to play a lot of 1-3-1 in the old days..late 70's/early 80's. 1-3-1 can be a monster defense if you have Patrick Ewing or Alonzo Mourning as that back "1" -- the other guys can gamble and fly all over the place, and the rim is still protected. Or Bradley Hayes.

Funny that everyone always talks about how Duke doesn't play good defense. I missed the first 5 minutes, but since I have been watching I don't think Utah has had a single good look from 3 - compared to the dozen or so uncontested, wide open looks from 3 we gave them.

Wright in foul trouble doomed them

Tournament Notes: Tom Izzo can coach his balls off I find it funny that when people suggest changes to our team to do better in the tournament, it's almost never (or really, never) to become like the ultimate tournament overachiever in Izzo. Tough D, grind it out, don't turn it over, lots of rebounding. Although this team actually has three pretty good shooters.

Pitino, Izzo, and 6 of the best 9 teams in the nation later, this "crapshoot" is doing an awful job of doing an awful job at picking a champion.

And yet a cautionary tale - I was at the East Regional last night, sitting in front of 4 or 5 MSU fans in their 20's. When they fell behind by 8 in the second half, they were all grousing about how Izzo can't recruit any more, his schemes are too old fashioned, the game is passing him by, etc. I asked one of them how they felt after they came back and won - one of them just said they were lucky that Buddy Hield had an off game.

Great post. Fans will always find something to complain about. Watching this tournament (like all NCAA tourneys) just impresses me on how far we have to go to get elite 8 or final four level talent. There are guys out there with skills (especially big men) that we haven't had since Hibbert and Green. It's not rocket science. Give us an Okafor or a Harrison twin or a Harold and we make deep NCAA runs. Seriously, can you imagine what would happen if Josh or Hop had to play against some of these guys?

Of course, though K's teams really don't outperform in the tourney anymore. He just tends to outrecruit everyone at this point. Pitino, sure, and of course, Izzo. But that said, I think you missed my point. There's tons of ways to win, period, whether in the regular season or in the tourney. There's no one way to be good. But when people make their regular complaints, the solutions they propose always fit their aesthetic wants -- they aren't factually based on teams that actually do outperform in the tourney.

Pitino and Izzo deserve tons of credit, but I would have KILLED for Louisville's 4-seed draw to the Final Four. Irvine, Northern Iowa, NC State, Michigan State. It helps to be lucky, like we were in 2007 when Green and Wallace's shots went in at the right time.

I love Dekkar. Can't believe how lightly regarded he was.

I love Dekkar. Can't believe how lightly regarded he was. His RSCI was 13 and most recruiting services had him top 20. Most mock drafts have him first round. Not high profile but the opposite of lightly regarded.

I love Dekkar. Can't believe how lightly regarded he was. Dekker was the #12 ranked player in his HS senior class in the 247 sports composite ratings (they average all the major rating service rankings). He was also reported to be the best player at one of the major camps last sumer, which included both big time college players and (I think) some young NBA players. he really just started to fully reach his potential for Wisconsin consistently over the past couple of weeks. He has been a monster in the tournament, the best athlete on the floor in pretty much every game. It woudl be interesting to see how his athleticism plays against Kentucky.

If only he'd lose that Keith Van Horn haircut.
