Mere speculation on my part (not that mere speculation ever stopped anyone on this board before): DePaul administrators insisted that the new coach keep Billy Garrett Sr. on the coaching staff, so as to keep Billy Garrett Jr. on the roster. Both Bobby Hurley and Bryce Drew refused to commit to keeping a coaching slot open for Garrett Sr. Dave Leitao, who is obviously thrilled to be in the running for any head coaching job at all, agreed to this precondition. Leitao gets the job, and keeps the Garretts in place.
I fully expect Leitao to bring in Jerry Wainwright on the coaching staff. Why not continue with the Back To The Future blueprint?
If nothing else, DePaul won't have to worry about another school poaching their head coach, like Virginia did with Leitao a decade ago. What a horribly disappointing decision.

Leitao was Calhoun's lead recruiter at UConn before he took the DePaul job the first time IIRC.

A couple rumors we will find out if there is any truth to fairly quickly
1) Says Chicago HS coaches aren’t exited by the hire
2) They think they can land Lovette and Leitao puts them in good position to do so…
We will see

Brendan Prunty @brendanprunty 6m6 minutes ago They used a search firm. /passes out from laughter RT @bydavidgardner: To be clear: That Dave Leitao to DePaul news is from today, not 2002
Remember, this is the same search firm that brought Julie Hermann to Rutgers as the athletic director, which has been reviled for the better part of a year-plus in New Jersey.

Leitao reportedly received a five-year contract. That means that DePaul will have three years' worth of excuses as to why they cannot eat Leitao's contract and bring in a new coach.

Chicago Tribune reporting its a done deal. I might have to renege on my recent pledge to get season tickets when they finally move to south loop. We'll see how he recruits CPS. It all depends on that. Seems like half the kids in the Sweet 16 are Chicago kids, much to the chagrin of U of I and Depaul.

DePaul has even abandoned the pretense of trying to field a competitive program.

DePaul has even abandoned the pretense of trying to field a competitive program. Does seem like the affordable move, doesn't it?

Let's just say that the posters at bluedemonsnation.com aren't exactly doing cartwheels with the news of Dave Leitao's hiring:

depaul2003
Re: Dave it is « Reply #1 on: Today at 04:44:03 PM » As a depaul grad, I'm done with the school on every level. I graduated in 2003 and enjoyed few good years of basketball while at Depaul. What has transpired since is a total joke. As for tickets, myself and ten of my close friends from Depaul used to be season ticket holders. We all purchased two tickets for the season. We cancalled in 2012. It's terrible!

It's just mind blowing that they had Leitao as one of their top choices. Even if both Hurley/Drew said no, there's no reason to rush to hire Leitao. He's not going anywhere. There are tons of mid major coaches and assistants who should have been ahead of Leitao.

Just spent about ten minutes in the chat section of bluedemonsnation.com, communicating with DePaul fans. They are incredulous and disconsolate. They cannot believe this hiring. Seems that the AD has greater juice with the administration than we can imagine. The DePaul board is advocating dropping down to the Summit or Horizon leagues, rather than continue to be embarrassed in the Big East. I didn't tell them that we've been debating that issue ourselves.

Can we get rid of Depaul now and replace them with a school that gives a darn about its program? Like say Dayton who just resigned Miller?

Non rhetorical question because I'm too lazy to Google: has any conference ever actually booted a delinquent team? In the last 30 years?

Idk.. What about his background makes him such a terrible hire?
Seems like he did pretty descent there his 1st time around. I don’t remember the last time I heard about Depaul making the Tourney let alone winning a game. Lead recruiter at Uconn means he can boast getting a lot of guys in the league, some probably NCAA legends. He landed top talents for Depaul also in Wilson Chandler, Sammy Mejia and Dorrell Wright (signed LOI but opted to go Pro). If he can get some young recruiters on his staff maybe he can do something.
Definitely like that defense is his mantra. Don’t remember the last time I saw Depaul play D either

Temple was booted from Big East football for failing to meet attendance minimums--the Owls once drew as few as 4,045 per game at the Vet, which is about 2,000 more than the Hoyas draw at unfinished Multi-Sport Field. I am aware of only one school who was dismissed for all sports within a conference - Texas-Pan American, who was told to leave the Sun Belt in 1998 over NCAA violations. They now compete in the WAC, which is actually still around.
