According to the Chicago Tribune, DeAndre Thomas is down to Georgetown and Kansas. Link below (registration required): www.chicagotribune.com/sports/chi-0504170173apr17,1,2394643.story?coll=chi-sportsnew-hed DFW, C86, and I saw bits of DeAndre playing on TV in an all-star game yesterday. DeAndre is, shall we say, strapping.

Yep, he's a big, big kid. And supposedly he has lost 50 pounds or so in the last year!
One thing I'll say for him is that he likes to throw his weight around in the post. When he was posting up Biggs (going to Pitt), who is very big himself, he just kept bumping him until he got some seperation. It was a litttle Sweetney-esque. But he is a major project until he gets in better shape. Seemed to have good feet and good hands, and his free throws looked good.
He reminds me a lot of Ellis Myles from Louisville. He used to be as big as DeAndre, but he lost the weight and by his junior year was an excellent player. Not an all-american, but a solid starter on a final four team.

Rivals list's him as 6'8'' - 270 lbs.
Are either of those measurements correct?? Posts on this board seem to indicate he's more like 6'6'' and 300.

I am waiting for RDF's rant...I mean is this a good move by us? He sounds hung up on Illinois, but it would be cool if he was extra fired up to play them next year I guess.
Also, where is this guy ranked by the recruiting gurus, if anywhere? the=way relax buddy, just want to have some sort of frame of reference...I know these people aren't infallible.

None of us knows if he actually has an offer from us, so this article may not amount to anything in terms of GU recruiting.

I read somewhere that he measured 6'7'' barefoot, so he plays at around 6'8''. He has adequate size. As for 270...I think he may have gotten caught on the towel rack, if you know what I mean.
In case you don't, there's no freakin' way he's 270.
He isn't a stiff - he is actually pretty intruiging with his post moves and physicallity. He can even jump pretty good - he missed a nice one handed dunk on the break, blocked some shots, that sort of thing. But he will be a project and a situational player so long as he's carrying all that weight.
I don't know if we've offered, but I don't think there's any chance that he gets an offer from Kansas, so he's probably ours if we want him at this point.

Hmmm.. let me see... so he would be playing "around 6'8" so long as the real 6'8" guys are playing barefoot? Last I heard, everyone's height was measured when they were barefoot, but what do I know.

If he was really 6'8" 270 he'd actually have some offers.

I have mixed feelings about this guy. If the decision is between him and that 6'7" Florida kid (Marvin Williams?) I would rather have the more versatile Williams who can do a little of everything over a very large center. I trust JTIII to choose the best fit for our system among the guys he is considering for the final scholarship. Personally though, I think versatilty does much more for us than a specialist.

HA! Great! I like that one! Hmmm.. let me see... so he would be playing "around 6'8" so long as the real 6'8" guys are playing barefoot? Last I heard, everyone's height was measured when they were barefoot, but what do I know. Usually when people say he "plays at 6'8" even though hes a bit shorter, that usually indicates the player has longer than average arms. At any point in the game where youre really doing anything significant, your arms will be up, so a guy who's about 6'7 but has extra long arms will have a standing vertical reach about equal to a 6'8" player. I don't know if thats what he meant though. A good thing about a 6'7 post player is that he's not likely to leave early for the NBA. It's just not big enough to play PF in the league, so you're likely dealing with a 4 year player, which I like, and 6'7 is large enough to be a productive PF in the NCAA. The key is that the player has to be a workhorse, someone with a lot of will, and it sounds like Thomas may not be that. I dont know enough about Thomas one way or the other to say I want him or we should pass, so I'm gonna defer to JTIII and staff and trust their judgment. But how many scholarships do we have left? If Thomas comes, that means Owens is gone and Wallace doesn't get a scholarship? If so, its a risky proposition. Also sounds as if Octavius Spann may be able to hold down the 4 over the next few years, and thus Thomas may not be necessary.

Octavious Spann is more likely to play 2G than PF. He's a definant SF and has some rebounding ability but this talk of him being able to play PF is a bit much. He's more like Bowman than he is Green. I think he's a versatile player and has some fantastic instincts to rebound, but he's not someone I'd say is a guy who can log a lot of time at the 4 spot against the type of competition he'll face.
As for Thomas, I've stated what I was told by many who've seen him and then my opinion after watching him play, so no need to go there again. I will say that this article makes very little sense to me. How can Thomas "eliminate Illinois" when they are "showing him no love"?? Wouldn't that indicate that Illini eliminated the option of him attending school there? If he does indeed become a Hoya, I'll wish him the best, but I'd rather see GU go in another direction.

"Illinois is in my back yard, but they stopped calling and weren't showing me any love. I know they've got a big man from Georgia (6-8, 260-pound Charles Jackson) coming in, but they are really missing out by not getting me. I hope to play against them someday, because none of their bigs can stop me."
If you come to GU you better get ready for them very quickly DeAndre.

i dont mind taking a guy who is overweight and undersized, as long as he has a good attitude and will work hard. look at craig smith who was chubby in high school and wasnt even getting looked at by top programs in his backyard. now he's possibly the best player in the big east due to hard work. im sure jt3 and staff will only take a flyer on thomas if they see in him the commitment it will take to improve.
though i thought someone said we had moved on from thomas?

"Georgetown has helped its players get to the NBA, and John Thompson Sr. still does a lot for the program in helping his son [coach John Thompson Jr.]."
An honest mistake I guess.

I know the quality of the broadcast was reported to be terrible, but I'm looking for a tape for a friend who wants to check out Pargo.

kansas has no scholly's to give, so i think thomas is ours.
KU gave their last scholly to Christian Moody a walk on and unless someone declares for the draft there is no way thomas comes.
hoyas should get him if they want him.

I like the sound of this kid. He seems to have a chip on his shoulder in a good way (like he has something to prove). I suspect that diet and exercise will do wonders for Mr. Thomas. A little 'tude and some bulk would do wonders for our front court situation.

My concern is that he will be too out of shape to contribute next year, and is actually less ready to contribute than the 2006 guys we are after. I could see him being recruited over before he even plays.
If Wallace gets a schollie and Ewing comes in 06, we won't have a lot of space. I'd prefer to pass on Thomas.

Too out of shape? Wha? Did I miss something? We don't need him to play tomorrow. He is young and the season does not start for many months. Puh leaze, the kid was the player of the year in CHICAGO. Too fat to contribute, gimme a break.
