This move seems to make sense. Their stock in trade at this point, as with every sports network (outside of 30 for 30 type productions), is live sports. Not that it ever seems like a good idea to put more emphasis on Skip Bayless but they have to fill the time with something between events. There are enough sports-dedicated podcasts and radio shows such that seeking out articles on a major network seems, mostly, superfluous. For the really good writers, there are plenty of avenues/outlets for them to continue to put out their own work without needing to be employed by any major network. One of the good things about how fractured the outlets have become (not just for sports but for TV in general) is that quality is more important than ever because the competition is brutal. Good sports writing still has a place. Hopefully, much of the crappy writing will be weeded out.
