All one needs to do to understand the terrible quality of refereeing is take a look at the travel/game schedules of these officials. Phil Martelli asked a few years ago what would be said of a coach who had his team play four games in six nights in four different cities. I understand that officiating is not playing but the schedules of these officials is a joke. There is no way they are mentally/ physically sharp for this volume of games. Agreed. People also need to realize these are part-time officials who hold down real jobs. It's not so easy to be calling fouls at 9:00 pm at Seton Hall or Villanova when you're still an assistant principal or a insurance agent in Harrisburg during the day. Which is really stupid for a multi-billion industry. Full-time officials would help a lot, especially because it'd give the officials the ability to improve in the offseason (and would encourage more talented people to become officials).

I know I have seen John Cahill, Big East supervisor of officials, courtside at one of our games. He was texting madly away on his phone. I wonder if he is actually watching any of these games and, if so, there is going to be any effort to improve the level of officiating in the conference I'd have to think not. The worst part is the amazing inconsistency within games and the frequency with which the one ref who is most out of position or cannot possibly see the foul he just imagined is the one that makes the call. I love that one of the worst refs ever failed upward to become supervisor of officials. Precisely. Cahill probably doesn't think anything's out of the ordinary.

Apparently we're planning to make the Johnnies feel right at home! I can't wait for the "Dress Like Your Favorite Blue Pirate" theme when we host Seton Hall!

Cahill was court side at the Prov. game. The play-by-play guy, Andrew Catalano, lives in the Albany area (was a sports reporter for local TV and married the news anchor). He was on a local radio show the next day and said he and Cahill were on the same flight back that morning. He asked Cahill about the "post-whistle technical" on DeRosiers, Cahill said it was absolutely the right call, hard contact after the whistle. So he st least saw that play.

Transition D is going to be important in this one and, as much as the Johnnies need to run to win, the Hoyas should run with them well. And they should encourage it. St. John's has zero depth and picks up stupid fouls like our guys do at times. The war of attrition should favor the Hoyas in a huge way. We don't only have depth. We have quality depth. And the ability to match up in many different ways. Harrison is overrated and we have multiple guys that can ruin his day if need be. I'm fine with letting him try to win it. He's a horrible decision maker. And, as far as I can tell, it's a bit of a contest on that squad as to who "the man" is and that works for us too. Get Obekpa or Pointer in trouble and then focus on Jordan. Harrison will make enough poor decisions to even out the shots that he makes. And when he misses a few in a row, he'll just stand in the corner. If they're losing by a little late and there is a possible momentum shift, Harrison is always good for an ill-advised 3 early in the clock or from NBA range. If he makes it, they have a little spurt. If he misses, they're done.

Halftime in St. John's vs Xavier. St. John's actually looks pretty good today. It seems like they recognize that they are fighting to get on the right side of the bubble and are playing more in control than I have seen them in a while. Jamal Branch is playing very well, with a senior sense of urgency (as is Pointer and Harrison). Georgetown needs to match St. John's intensity from the outset and take advantage of those terrible mistakes that have become the hallmark of St. John's basketball in recent years.

St. John's does a lot of driving into traffic, throwing up a prayer and hoping it goes in or they draw a foul. We match their length and athleticism this year but we have to be disciplined in defense. Don't bite on shot fakes and none of that matador D that Tre plays when he tries to go for steals or is overly aggressive.

Enormous win by the Johnnies at Xavier. Our guys better be prepared for a fight on Tuesday, because SJU is riding a wave of momentum coming into town, and I'd have to imagine they know a win at our house will go a long ways on Selection Sunday. We need all hands on deck for this one (students, it's time to redeem yourselves).

I think this game will go a long way towards whether we are going to be a Xavier-like seed (10-11) or a Butler-like seed (4/5/6). We are still teetering a bit. We've taken care of business against the bad BE teams, but we really need some more top 50 wins.

This game is an opportunity for Josh Smith to contribute on offense. His play has really fallen off as of late, and though he has been called for some very marginal fouls, he has to be more of a factor for this team to succeed.

His play has really fallen off as of late, and though he has been called for some very marginal fouls, he has to be more of a factor for this team to succeed. Josh needs to kick the ball out more quickly for open perimeter shots; if we hit a couple of those, the double team hesitates and Josh has more time to be effective down low. Obekpa does not have the strength to stop him by himself.

No excuse not to take this one at home. Let's get it done. We haven't won a home game in forever. 3 home losses in conference play would be a disgrace. Have to hold serve.

D'Angelo Harrison has been bothered by a calf injury over the past few weeks, and has had difficulty hitting the outside shot. Rysheed Jordan and Sir'Dominic Pointer have stepped up in his absence. Chris Obekpa's minutes have been reduced, and he hasn't been as effective as he was earlier. They are not made for comeback wins; if the Hoyas can get out ahead early, this may not be much of a game.

St. John's win against Xavier is very significant, since we lost to Xavier twice. The Johnnies are a manic team, high highs and low lows. And right now they are on a high and feeling very good about themselves. According to stats they are 0-3 against top AP25 teams and are 3-4 on the road. That's the good news. The bad news is we get them next and we'd better be ready. We have to come out firing early and not turn the ball over, giving them fast break opportunities, which will kill us. Let's defend home court. Go Hoyas.

Just want to be sure this isn't all a hoax and that we really missed on a chance to do a Fat Tuesday thing against another Catholic school and are still incorporating the opposing team's colors.

Quick question -- with 4 - 8 inches of snow expected in the District, any word on whether the game will be on? I'm assuming they will play the game, just wondering if anybody has heard anything definitive.
That being said, even if there is 4-8 inches, that should shut down the region and give students, and fans plenty of time to get to the Verizon Center.

As long as St. John's is here today, like they should be, there's no reason not to play. Still remember the snowmagedon Villanova game. Had have a friend with a big 4x4 jeep give us a ride into the city. Was totally worth it though.
Already nervous/excited about this game. I think it's mostly because we've had so much time off. Need this win. Have to sweep these two home games.
