The good thing about the redshirt year is that Ewing Jr has a year to work on the skills that he is now lacking. Given the staff's ability to develop player's skills (shooting, passing, etc), my guess is that Ewing Jr will be an improved player by the time he is eligible to play.
"Some said we surprised some people earlier this year. I don't want that. I want people to see us coming, know we're coming, and us to beat 'em anyways. But don't worry, the winning is coming."
-III, last night
"I was sitting with Jeff (Green) at the BE Media Day waiting for Jeff's BE ROY award, and I whispered to Jeff, 'Don't get too tied with with this award; we have one on Saturday we have to win (BET Title).' Jeff leaned back and said, 'And one 3 weeks later? Don't forget about the one 3 weeks later', and he meant the National Championship. And I thought to myself, 'He gets it. He gets it.'"

He will also provide a step up in competition to Jeff & the other front line players which is key. I think this will be invaluable to the squad and in improving our depth overall, this is one area that is often overlooked. These guys are going to have people testing them everyday versus just on game day.

This is fantastic. It'd be even better if he isn't taking a ship, but in the larger scheme I don't think it matters a great deal. There's a limited amount of playing time available regardless of the scholarship situation, and I can't imagine a player as talented as Ewing playing less than 25 minutes a game as a junior or senior. The worst part is that he's EXACTLY what we need for next year, and it's going to suck seeing him on the bench while people grab offensive rebounds on us. I've seen this kid play in person twice and one TV maybe 5 other times, and he is a player. Throw in the name and the history and I haven't been this excited about a player since, well, Jeff Green I suppose.
I posted the above link a couple weeks ago, but I thought some may have missed it. Download the top 10 dunks for 2005 - PE Jr. is number 1 and 3. Now, I know there's more to basketball than running and jumping, but Pat does those two things better than any Hoya during my time on the hilltop. The kid is a pogo stick - he just needs to harness it. A redshirt year is exactly what the doctor ordered. Anyway, watch the dunks. He is an incredible athlete.
Good analysis, Cambridge. However, I'll wait for _way's "objective" analysis of Ewing Jr's game before I form an opinion. After all, that's the only opinion that really matters, right? Plus, its much more accurate than statistics or any other projections others are making.
I wonder if _way feels the same way about baseball stats and projections as he does about any work that's been done on the board. After all, what are batting averages, slugging percentages, etc. if nothing else than probabilities that an event will occur? GASP! Projections?!?
Anyone know what Pat's consensus ranking was coming out of high school? I would be interested to know...thanks - let's hope we get him - even if he isn't the second coming of his pops, we could always use about 6'8 body with hops that can rebound.
I have no idea whether this is true, but if it is I think it is a mistake.
1. DJ deserves another year, and if PE Jr. gets his scholarship I think it is showing loyalty to the wrong person.
2. This team has the potential to be very good next year if Bowman comes back, but they need help next year and PE Jr. cannot play until 2006-07. Even if DJ does not get the spot, then it should go to a freshman who can play right away.
3. I don't like taking on someone else's problem. Junior bounced around in high school, was ultimately found not to be a good fit for GU as a freshman, and is now transferring for PT after showing little other than some athletic ability at IU.

Hey Buff, statistics are okay, but they aren't the end all.A lot of times, they are misleading, rarely do they ever till the whole story. Projections in terms of numbers don't give you a clue about anything. You can't say a person is going to EXACTLY do in 20 minutes based on what they did in 10 minutes. Its inaccurate. Coaching and evaluating talent involves a whole lot more than just statistics. I remember Red Aurebach said when he evaluated players he would go to game with a cigar in his mouth, and watch a player play. He didn't need a pad, a pen, and a calculator. He watched what the player brought to the court and the team, which a lot of times don't show up on box scores. If that weren't the case there would be a lot of former statisticians turned coaches/GM's winning NCAA titles, NBA titles, NFL titles etc.

Yeah for anyone that's questioning Jr.'s ability or potential (which some people in this thread seem to be doing), I refer you to the link in NYC's post right here. Ewing or not a Ewing, Don't tell me the guy all over these highlights and so far above the rim is a guy we wouldn't want.
Welcome home.
"We talk about that a lot," Hibbert said. "All four of us together, including Tyler Crawford, we're a family, we go out together and everything. We have a bond that's special. And for four years, we're here together." - Roy Hibbert, on Georgetown's Basketball Class of 2008.

Not to be overly speculative, but what does this mean for Guibunda? This could mean even less playing time for him in the future than expected if he were to stay.

I doubt that. Right now, we only have two proven legitmate frontline, power players in Jeff and Roy. Roy is still developing. If Cornelio can develop, thats 4 bigs at our disposal. That is enough depth for the power positions. If Cornelio doesn't develop, than PE2 is an even a more crucial transfer. Plus, with Jeff's potential, who is to say he may stay all 4 years. Jeff is better than a lot of players entering the draft right now. Wait till he improves on his already stellar game.
I don't think anyone who knows what the deal is with Guibunda is saying right now. I guess we just have see how it plays out.
Jack, I hear you man, and I always want to show loyalty to the players who are on the team. I know DJ and he's a quality guy. I'd love for him to be back. But I don't see how the Ewing thing really impacts that. Given the uncertainty about who will be back next year and who's getting a scholarship and what have you, there are many more variables at play than DJ or Pat. It's not fair to boil it down to that. Let's at least see how everything else plays out in recruiting and in player retention before getting too worked up about it.
Also, I think others have mentioned how the transfering and stuff wasn't of a Harvey Thomas/unstable sort of thing, but more the result of difficult family circumstances and some bad luck. By all accounts, he isn't a troublemaker, and transfering from IU right now is, well, what do they say about rats and sinking ships?

Like it or not, Jeff Green and Pat may never play together...I think JTIII is preparing for the -- hopefully unlikely -- scenario of Bowman graduating & Green going to the league after next season. PE2 would be a useful, experienced stop gap to plug what would be a sizeable hole in our lineup. Sure, we would have Doc Oct and Egerson to fill the 3/4 along with whatever other recruits we might snag, but we would loose our two most versatile players for those positions.
Of course, this is just speculation and Jeff may stay all four years, I just like the way JTIII is preparing for the possibility of that happening. Not like when you know who got "shocked" when Mike went to the league after junior year....cause that played out real well.

You think Jeff goes after next season? He'll turn some NBA heads and probably get drafted, but he'll be a lottery pick after his junior year if everything goes right.

I didn't say I thought it, but I think that it's a possibility that's in the back of JTIII's mind and worth taking into account when thinking about scholarships. I'm not big into waiting for "the next year cause that class is loaded" mentality, because it just never seems to pan out. Nor am I a big fan of recruiting by position, because I think you need to get the best players available regardless of positions. But, I am a big fan of realizing that certain things could occur, whether we like it or not, and adjusting your strategy to minimize the impact if it occured.
Would you rather have DJ for one year of potential zone-busting threes Or PE2 for three (only playing for two) years of rebounding, athleticism and increased involvement of PEsr?
Not to be cynical but we would definitely be helping any on-campus arena plans involving PE senior if we bring his son into the fold and turn his college bball experience into a positive one. Even if it doesn't pan out like that....the more contact with the past champions, the more overlap the better: for media exposure, alumni involvement, etc.

Alright, first, I'm really psyched, but I really need to do some work. But, before I go, I watched the Northwestern highlight film on that sight I gave you earlier.
Here's the direct link.
Pat is incredible in this game - blocking shots, stealing the ball, dunking - he's just everywhere. It's a 7 minute clip, so here are some particular standouts:
1:30 3:37 4:05 4:25 4:35 4:48 5:54
He's such a good athlete and such an active player. No, he can't really shoot at the moment, but I think he's a better defender (and certainly a more versataile defender) than anyone else on the team. He shouldn't have to be a star, but he's the sort of player who plays on great teams. And he's a ton of fun to watch. All you folks with mixed feelings about this, watch this clip and tell me again how we can do better.
And Cambridge, I think Ewing would be a great option even if Jeff were going to stay for 4 years. But you're absolutely right that we have to be prepared for the eventuality (inevitablity?) than Mr. Green will be a top 5 pick next year.
Awesome, just awesome. And now, I'm back to work, with visions of Ewings and Thompsons dancing in my head...
