Interestingly, no awards were given out this year other than the scholar athlete award. JT III said they had received enough praise over the course of the season.

Overheard -- Barker Davis was chattiing with a longtime HHC member at my table. Davis said Sapp and Eggerson "can play." He also said that Wallace will get a scholarship, and that while the coaching staff would love to have DJ back, there is no schollie available. Davis also seem to indicate that the staff wasn't that high on Thomas from Chicago, and that Thomas was overweight.
III made a big point about having the team hit the weightroom. Coach Broadus made a funny joke about when they first heard that BB was making himself eligible for the NBA -- Broadus joked, the "WNBA?"

Someone at my table said that he had asked Owens if he was coming back. Owens response was he did not know. I took that to mean that the staff has not told Owens one way or the other whether there will be a scholarship. They are probably waiting to see if Brandon goes out, any new recruit commits, and/or if any one else leaves.
I for one would have liked to have awards at an awards banquet.

I didn't mind at all that there were no awards given out other than scholar athlete.
It really gave a sort of complete team feel like the New England Patriots being introduced as a team a few years back rather than individually.
Interesting that DJ kept repeating that this was his first time in 4 years that he really felt like they were a team and that everyone was close.

Isn't DJ pretty well off? What I am wondering here, although it would be extremely unorthodox, is could he come back for a 5th year as a non-scholarship player?
This might even benefit him with another year of play and a better shot at a premier Euro team or something like that.

Where's HoyaRon? Those statements should get Barker Davis's stripes reduced.

He'd still take up a schollie spot though, b/c once you use a scholarship, you can't go back to being a walk on. So even if DJ pays his own way, he'd count against the schollie limit.

I don't think he or any other person with sense would spend that kind of money for a year, even if he is well off just to prepare to play for a Euro team the following year where he is good enough to go play for a Euro team now.

Would Europe be a real possibility for Owens? I don't know a lot about what the talent level is. I wouldn't think I guy who didn't start for a non-NCAA team would be that high on people's lists over there, but as I said I have no idea what the competition is like.

DJ does sound like a goner- and they had high praise for Cornelio as a teammate and person.
Amadou did win the scholar-athlete award.
3 also took a short swipe at those who speculate by "typing on a computer". But basically the point was to trust them, the fear and winning is coming.

I dont think DJ can comeback as a nonscholarship player. It's my understanding that once you're given a scholarship, it cant be taken back, so once you play as a scholarship player, you can never again play as a walk on.
I thought there was a possibility that Europe would be in the cards for DJ if he played again this year and consistently played as well as he did down the stretch this year. He may still have a shot at making a club somewhere if he can show the ability he did late in the year. If not, hes still got a degree from Georgetown, so its a win win.

Scholarships are renewable on a year-to-year basis, RB. You mat not be able to have a scholarship taken back once it is given to you, but they are only one-year commitments, so a player can be on scholarship one year and then not have it given to him the next.
I don't understand why we don't keep DJ on scholarship and keep Wallace as a walk-on next year. Makes no sense.

There are a lot of guys that play overseas that don't or didn't have the careers DJ had. DJ would do well in Europe. Guys like Byron Mouton from Maryland are doing well in Europe. So I know DJ could do well.

I'm speculating that maybe the staff promised Wallace a scholarship the following year if he walked-on his first year. This is a pure guess on my part.

If a player has ever recieved an athletic scholarship from a team, he will always count against the scholarship limit so long as he's on the team. If DJ comes back, he will count against the scholarship limit, whether or not he pays his own way.

As for "it makes more sense for Wallace to walk on again".... sense to whom? Just a guess, but I don't think Wallace's family and accountant would agree with that.

But basically the point was to trust them, the fear and winning is coming. Glad to hear the positives re: Cornelio. That's the first sign of anything positive on him that I can remember. As for the speculating... I guess that's a lot of us. On the other hand, the tenor of this board has been very supportive of T3 and the whole program. But speculating about and discussing the team demonstrates just how strongly people feel about the program. The number of posters and posts must correlate with interest in the team. Thanks to all attendees for your reports!
