Don't know if this was mentioned in the butler thread, but Josh was playing with the flu. As a result, he was more gassed than usual. Hope he's feeling better. Tmrw is going to be a war. I am assuming Nova will play mostly man, so we'll get to see our offense in action. It was discussed on the broadcast quite a bit. I thought Josh played quite well under the circumstances.

He's going to struggle to hang with Ochefu running the floor even if he's completely healthy. Hayes has five fouls to remind Ochefu not to get too comfortable. I expect an old school BE game.

I have not seen Nova play this year, but am familiar with the guys they have..Ochefu, Hart, Jenkins, Ennis, Hilliard, Pinkston, and Ryan A. Are these guys really that much more talented than what we have on our roster? I admit wearing Hoya colored glasses...but it just surprises me that they are considered such a juggernaut, ranked #5, 17-1. Not sure why we don't stand a good chance to beat em, especially at home. IF I am wrong...would love to get some information from the experts out there. No. They're less talented. But more experienced. And they play great defense. Wright is getting the most he can out of his squad. I'm not saying they're not talented. They absolutely are. But our guys have a higher ceiling (the freshmen). The Ochefu/Smith matchup will be fun to see if the officials let them play a bit. I'm concerned about Joshua being able to get up the floor in this one and Ochefu is a lot to handle for Hop. Should be a good one. Ennis has stepped his game up. They are tough because they have played together for 2 to 3 years now.

The Hoyas need to play very smart and tough. One key is to limit the really bad turnovers that lead to points and fouls. Another is to win the foul war. Another is to hit free throws.
I have the feeling that we need a pretty big game from at least one freshman to win. Peak needs to drive and draw some fouls. I am not sure who Nova has to match up with Copeland. The question there is whether Nova will identify and abuse Ike on defense. He needs to position himself well, talk, and make his fouls count.
Finally: as to Nova's "fake the three and jump into slightly elevated defender" garbage- just once I would like a defender to realize he is going to pick up the foul and just let himself land on the Nova player. If they want to do that crap, they should pay the price.

One, if they've scouted Georgetown at all, they'd realize we're much less proficient against zone than man. Secondly, they don't have much behind Ochefu, so in a road game up against Josh Smith, my guess is they won't want to leave Echefu exposed one-on-one vs. Smith very often.

In many ways this Villanova team could be us in 2-3 years if everyone stays. I would hate to play us when Peak, White, Copeland, and Campbell have a few years playing together. Add in a few new recruits and we will be very dangerous. As for tonights game, I predicted that if we beat Butler the mojo would carry over to this game. I still feel that way. Our guys are pumped. I would hate to be guarded by Traws right now. I also think DSR is poised for his best game. And one of the Frosh, my guess White, will be huge. Look, we have 12 games left. 6 at home and 6 on the road. If we win 5 of the 6 home games and 3 of the road games we finish 12-6 in the BE and 20-9 overall. Good enough for NCAA and this year I think (unless we play Kentucky) we will make the sweet 16. Okay Hoya colored glasses. But this team is peaking and the game tonight will prove it.

I don't know if we are peaking just yet based on that first half, but I'm not scared of 'Nova. Seton Hall beat 'em, we will too.

My biggest concern is that it gets passed around the team over the next week or so.

Looking forward to the game tonight. Should be fun. To this comment, I can almost guarantee that Villanova will play exclusively man-to-man. Jay just doesn't use the zone hardly at all, and it shows when we try to roll it out. Expect a lot of 1-2-2 34 court pressure, falling back into a switching m-2-m. I will say that our defense, in particular 3-pt defense, has been markedly better this year than in previous seasons. As someone said above, this is an experienced team, and it shows.

Two random stats:
--Since Villanova moved up to #4 in both polls this afternoon, they'll be the highest ranked opponent to visit Verizon Center since...Villanova, when they were #2 on Feb 6, 2010. The weather in the DMV right now (50 degrees and sunny) is considerably better than five years ago.
--By my count, under JT3 we're currently 45-44 against ranked opponents, so it'd be nice to keep that above .500.

In the past Jabril has been way too hyped up for this game and has subsequently played poorly if memory recalls. Hopefully he'll be fired up but more in control of his emotions and carry over what he had from the last game. We need two of the seniors to play well and two of the freshmen and we win. Let's hope it happens. Hoya Saxa!

Should be a great matchup. Lots of intrigue.
1) as our Nova fan here states Nova really only plays man-2-man. They'll probably try some zone, but will mostly play man more than likely. Which obviously helps
2) Ochefu. He's been great this year, but in his 2 match ups with legitimate back to the basket centers in Christmas of Syracuse and Stainbrook of Xavier he got dominated 18pts for Christmas vs. 6 for Ochefu and 17pts for Stainbrook and 6 for Ochefu. That bodes well for smith especially Stainbrooks numbers.
3) Villanova's 3pt shooting. They're very streaky. Hilliard's % is down to 35.3% from 41.4% last year. Archidiacino is down to 29.9% from 34.5% a year ago, Jenkins has a mild down turn to 36.6% from 37%. Meanwhile Hart and Ennis have improved their shots. But game to game their 3pt%s are: 24.2%, 33.3%, 22.7%, 38.9%, 30%, 40.6%, 50%, 39.1%, 33.3%, 60%, 25%, 44.4%, 25%, 20.8%(their one loss), 43.5%, 44.8%, 44.1%, 33.3%. They've taken between 12-34 3s in games. Them being off from outside would be a big help.
4)Free Throws. Villanova is the worst in the league at hitting FTs. 64% in conference 69.5% on the season. Funnily there's no one of the team that's super bad: Ennis is at 60%, Hart at 62.7%, but they also don't have anyone over 80% highest is Archidiacino at 77.8%. Most players in the low 70s on the season. Just have been hitting slightly worse in conference play. But then again they hit 89.5% of their FTs in their big win over Xavier also when they hit 44.1% from 3.
5) In relation to the last 2 points, they're getting less of their points from 3 and from the FT line than they did last year. They've made up for it by scoring more from 2pt. Also 9th in FT defense. So hopefully we can win the battle of the line. We're also drawing fouls at a better rate than they do. But they "don't foul" much.

We need desperately to stay out of foul trouble early.

We need desperately to stay out of foul trouble early. This would be a good reason not to start Hopkins, but I realize that's very unlikely to happen. Still, JT3 has generally avoided playing Smith and Hopkins together except the first few minutes of each game. We really need Josh Smith to be an offensive force for us this game if we are going to get anywhere. Given Villanova's good defense, Smith is likely to be our most potent weapon offensively.

This is yet another chance for us to beat a highly ranked team. We can't blow this one. We need everyone from the coach on down to step up and win a big one.

If the Hoyas can hit some 3s early I would be very comfortable that this will be a big night for Smith. If they don't, it could be a very long night. For those who note that Nova plays man it is going to be an interesting coaching battle. Do you go away from what you do best to take advantage of another team's weakness? I believe that if Nova plays man and we can avoid turnovers or limit them to under 10 we could win this comfortably. If they go zone, then I fall back on my belief that it comes back to our guards hitting their shots.
