If they are going to expand you have to think that the conference, and Fox, will want them to enter into large media markets. Even as bad as they have been for a few years, BC is a logical choice for a few reasons. Catholic school, similar size school and a large TV market that the conference is not in at this point. The problem is that they chased the football money and absolutely stink at this point in both football and basketball. The football money is why they left to start with, although you have to think they are having some second thoughts (except for all the ACC football money they get!!!) Would they move to a independent football schedule? Doubtful, but they have another few years of zero conference wins and that might change. UConn would fill the CT TV market but they are a large state university and have invested a lot of money into football. St Louis would not be an awful choice, good sized TV market, similar sized private school and some basketball history. Being part of the Big East might help them recruit. If you are going to expand you have to think it will be two teams. Adding Boston College would be a horrible idea. First, they are in the ACC and get a significant paycheck as a result of football. Even with a horrible team, they are not going to give up that contract. There is absolutely no reason why moving to the Big East would help them, and they would then have the problem of where to place the football program. Second, as noted in my other recent post, any addition MUST be a high quality program in basketball. We already have DePaul as the hopeless program at the bottom of the conference. We do not need to add another. Third, the fact that they are a Catholic school, similarly sized, and in a large TV market is really irrelevant. The first two factors are really irrelevant, and I think a "market" without a quality team is counterproductive. A market for the market's sake is pointless. Lastly, the UConn being a "large state university" is exactly why they would be a great addition. They are a historically very good program and they have a very large fan base that would not only increase attendance for the BET, but also all the schools, as they would draw interest among fan bases. No thank you to St. Louis. Adding a large state school would also help end any attempts to describe / limit the Big East as the Catholic school league.

But from the BE POV, they'd be perfect. - On 95, between Boston & DC (which I believe should be a requirement for all future adds - yes I know this is very limiting) - A program w/ great history with the conference & its members - A great school that raises the bar academically and athletically for the entire conference Being another Depaul? That's rubbish. John Bagley, Dana Barros, Howard Eisley, Bill Curley, Danya Abrams, Troy Bell, Craig Smith, Jared Dudley, et al. -- all in 25 years of BE play. They're down right now. But put them back in the BE and they'd be a perfect fit. But for now... those traitors can rot in their winless abyss.

BC is a hot mess right now, to the point that I've heard BE nostalgia voiced around here. For the BE's purposes, UConn >>>>> BC. UConn's football program is a joke and could be jettisoned with only a little embarrassment as the side effect. BC can't get rid of its football program, ever; the alums would riot. And since BC is the only thing keeping UConn out of the ACC, the status quo is preferable. Let UConn come to the sorely belated realization that bigtime football has been an ill-considered quest and they might be able to rejoin us in the BE. They instantly raise the caliber of BE basketball and delight all their alums. And even if in some bizarro universe BC left the ACC and petitioned for re-admittance, they'd be top target for the B10 or whoever is looking to expand their Power conference with that football program in place. (Personally, I enjoy the 10-team home and home and the flexibility of private school independence, so I'm cool with no expansion at all.)

Yeah - I'm very cool with 10, and I like what the league has been able to accomplish in a short time. GU success & league-wide NCAA tourney success would be nice to add. But in a vacuum, I'd think an unattached Boston College would be a no-brainer add for the conference. And UConn, too. With football driving things, I realize that's not happening.

The energy was awesome - even the Wed night doubleheader had a lot more electricity than the last couple years... as far as expansion targets let's not steer away from what we know 1) Non Football and 2) Private and 3) Urban/bigger city UCONN would need to KILL their football program and commit to keep it dead for a long time - if not, starting the day they join we will talk about which conference UCONN will try to jump ship to... I know Villanova will fight tooth and nail but Temple/St.Joe fit the bill, St.Louis fits, Detroit Mercy fits... The latter two deliver TV viewers in parts of the country where the BigEast brand is not as strong... I think our partners at FOX will certainly have a say St. Louis had a few good years during and immediately after Majerus. They were hideous this year. Has Detroit Mercy ever been good? I hate the idea that we need "big" market teams. DePaul is in a big market, but that doesn't mean anyone cares about them in Chicago. Most big markets are dominated in college sports by near by huge state schools, and by expats from other areas. Unless the big city private schools have recent success and tradition, they won't provide a thing to the BE. Dayton may be a smaller market, but they are similar to Creighton in that they have a rabid fan base that fills up their fairly large arena regularly. Dayton is also a school with plenty of tradition beyond the Archie Miller era. Although most of their big time success was some time ago, they seem to be a program with aspirations. Dayton would be a risk, but more of a mild one. VCU remains to be seen for me---they did have a few good teams under Capel and Grant, but they really are the Shaka program, and in time we will know whether they can be more than that. I don't see them as a risk worth taking at the moment. The only slam dunk is UCONN. I think that 12 works better than 11, which is why I'd be in favor of adding an extra in that circumstance. 10 really is a great number though (any way we could dump DePaul and replace them with UCONN?), so I see no need to rush into anything that could be seen as risky.

By the way, unless something drastic happens, I don't expect UCONN to dump their football program (bad as it is).

The Big East should not expand until the football conferences are all stable / unlikely to add any more schools. We have a good thing going now, and we can afford to wait to see what happens to UConn and the Big 12 (as well as post-Shaka VCU and post-Archie Miller Dayton) before we make any more decisions.

I agree that there is no rush to expand. I don't think that any addition of UConn would necessitate going to 12 teams just to get an even number. Scheduling might get tricky with 11 teams, but I don't see much value in adding a team unless that team itself brings something to the table.

BC and UConn would both fit well within the conference -- if they are willing to give up on big time football. As Catholics, aren't we supposed to forgive?
I suspect they would also be strong adds for the other sports we play.
Uconn could just be too big, though.
