Nolan Smith was a nice player, but if he played 40 minutes of pressure defense he would be worn out by February and March.

[Cue the off-base, off-topic discussion about Nolan Smith]

Game Day. Marquette favored by 4. We can do this; as always, need tight defense, limit turnovers, get at least a little production from the bigs. This is a big one, Billy Baroo.

It could be the sunny skies. I just have a good feeling about tonight's game.

So conventional wisdom = win tonight, split final two and we're in? Or would we still need a win in NYC. (Not putting tonight's game in my pocket by any means...)

I know you're not so this isn't directly in response to your post, but how can anyone be optimistic about tonight? Hoyas haven't shown any life on the road this year, and a late weeknight game in a hostile arena doesn't bode well even putting aside GU's lackluster performance at the Bradley Center. Color me extremely skeptical on tonight. Hope to be proven wrong. And yeah, in my opinion, 9-9, 1-1 in BET puts us so squarely on bubble but i think we squeak in as one of last four in based on non-con wins.

Brasky, there is always hope, I was at the only win at Bradley for III, JWALL made three free throes to force overtime for a win. I can picture the same thing for Markel tonite.

We all know this will be a war, and a very difficult road win. But Marquette is favored by 4, not 24. If we play a solid game, battle on the boards and limit our turnovers, we will be right there. Maybe "hopeful" is a better term than "optimistic". But we can certainly win this game.

Vegas has us roughly winning 1 out of 3 based on the odds so let's just hope tonight is our 1 because we really need it!

Not at all optimistic, but hopeful. I think that we are the better team. I just hope that tonight we are the smarter and more disciplined team.

If Markel and DSR want to both get really hot tonight and the next two games, well, I'm sure I wouldn't mind.

DSR and Markell went for something like 22 and 28 in the last game. we will need production from Jabrill who didn't play and maybe some offense from Hopkins. Can't give away a seven point lead in the last 3 minutes. If not will be drinking for old Tim Finnegan.

When Gardner steps out to 18 feet, please guard him this time.

If Caprio doesn't foul over the back on a missed Georgetown free throw with 28 seconds left and Hoyas up by 4, giving Marquette two free throws to cut it to two, I think we win. Oh wait, that was last game.

There are a few things that I think will go a long way toward telling us how we do in this game:
Marquette's Free Throws / Hoyas' Foul Trouble: If Marquette gets into the bonus with 10 minutes left in either half, that will be a major problem. We have masked our frontcourt problems by playing smaller lineups against some teams, but Marquette is not the type of team where we can do that.
Turnovers: As JT3 has said repeatedly, this team cannot afford to turn it over. Expecting 3 turnovers isn't realistic, but we need a low number.
Guards Need to Succeed: We need either DSR or Starks to be hot, the other one to be very good, and Trawick to play up to his recent level of success. Getting hot from three wouldn't hurt, either.
Defend, defend, defend: When we are out of sync on defense, it's usually obvious very quickly. If we can stay focused, I think we'll be okay. Since it's a very important road game for our team, I think we'll be up for the challenge.

We need one of our lesser lights to give us an 8-10 point contribution - Aaron, Hop, Nate - Reggie?

First five minutes of the halves will be critical and telling. If we keep it close (like we did against MSU), we have a really, really good chance. But if we fall behind (like we did at SHU and SJU), we do not seem able to overcome those early deficits. We really need to be very good, very early.

Oh wait, that was last game. I just died a little. For some reason I had completely blacked out that ending, even with us playing Marquette again tonight. Why oh why oh why JTIII - Caprio in crunchtime experiment FAIL.

A complete joke.
