Yeah look, I hate both of these teams like I hated Craig Esherick's play calling, but the Duke-Syracuse series this season has been the polar opposite of irrelevant. They've played two games that will easily be among the Top 10 most memorable of the season, if not higher, despite both being marred by questionable calls at the end. Put another way, Syracuse ain't gonna become "irrelevant on Tobacco road" any time soon because they're "relevant in Bristol". I can laugh at Jim Boeheim photoshop memes (and seriously folks, do yourself a favor and get on that) and LOLOLOLOL Tony Greene, and then I remember Fox Sports 1 pre-empted the first half of our game for NASCAR practice. It's unquestionably true that the omnipresence of Newhouse alumni throughout sports media in general, and ESPN in particular, creates a level of coverage 'stickiness' that has kept Syracuse's media profile at a high level, even when their performance on the court has not justified it. That stickiness isn't going to vanish the second Boeheim decides to call it a career, so outright "irrelevance" is likely not in the cards anytime soon. On the other hand... there are tons of Medill alumni throughout ESPN and sports media as well, and we don't see disproportionate levels of coverage of Northwestern. The Orange are a much more accomplished program, obviously, but nonetheless it's clear that sportscasters' alma maters only go so far in terms of coverage. They're all chasing where the fans and the viewership and the sponsors are. Consider also the case of Syracuse football. Does it get more coverage than its generally woeful record of the last decade deserves? Probably... but not by much. Considering the relatively limited number of games in the Eastern time zone, it's not surprising that Cuse football gets some extra play than they might otherwise deserve. Taken as a whole, though, Syracuse football is indeed effectively "irrelevant" when it comes to the football landscape. ESPN is high on Syracuse right now and has merged them into their premier ACC basketball product. That's not necessarily a guarantee of future privileged status, though. Compare how much coverage Memphis got with Calipari there to what they get now. Personalities count for a lot; Boeheim has been obliging enough, although he doesn't have anywhere near the level of symbiosis with ESPN that Coach K or Roy Williams do. I'm sure that having a good relationship with the press will be a top criterion for judging Boeheim's replacement, but as the Bernie Fine fiasco has shown, when the media smells the possibility of a feeding frenzy, loyalties go out the door. As for the Fox Sports 1 cutaway... I think we do have to grade on a bit of a curve right now, given that the channel is less than a year old. If our game were on ESPN and was bumped to ESPN2 for the first half hour, how many people would care? Not too many, since everyone gets ESPN2 (or can watch online). Fox Sports isn't there yet, either in terms of Fox Sports 2 penetration or online access. But that is very much the plan, and getting in on the ground floor should pay more dividends down the line. I hope. Not to mention the irrelevant-ness of other once strong ACC programs. Being in the ACC alone does not guarantee you insane media coverage on par with UNC and Duke forever. A few downs years once Jimmy B leaves and Syracuse could find itself in trouble. They don't have the same margin for error that Duke and UNC do or what they once had in the Big East for that matter. Any hole they get in (and most programs find themselves in a hole at some point) will be difficult to get out of.

Completely different note. I've got Butler over Provvy tonight. Yeah, that's a huge game for bubble teams. We still need to take care of business, but that would drop Providence behind us for sure.

As much as I hate Magoo too I remember last year when we were slaughtering them at Verizon Magoo made no effort to get back in the game via pressing or time outs or anything that might turn the tide. I remember thinking he wanted his kids to be humiliated by us since he knew we'd probably see them again in the BET. Sure enough they beat us in the BET and go onto the final 4. Magoo has his eyes on the NCAA prize right now and I would consider all his actions in that light.

Crap. BAD day bubble wise today so far:
Nebraska win (RPI 49) Providence win (RPI 63) Florida St win (RPI 66)
Everyone should be rooting for PAC 10 underdogs tonight USC over Cal (RPI 47) and Wash St. over Oregon (RPI 40). Utah over Az St (RPI 33) wouldn't be bad but their resume is solid even with a loss tonight.

And Hoyaholic - to my eyes, that was absolutely a terrible call. Everything about the new rules emphasis in college basketball this year tells us that is not a charge. That call was a perfect example of what the NCAA was trying to get rid of, but that ref just couldn't resist putting his own personal stamp on that game. How does the call represent a ref putting his personal stamp on the game? We can all agree that some foul was committed so a call needs to be made, right? It was going to be a big call no matter what. If the call had been a blocking foul, that's arguably even more significant, because it ties the game and puts CJ Fair on the line with a FT to take the lead with 10 seconds to go. The charge negates the basket and gives the ball back to Duke, but it's still a 2 point game with 10 seconds to go. Cuse can go for a steal or foul a team that was shooting sub-50% from the line. Boeheim ended the game, not the charge call. College basketball fans ascribe waaaaaaaaaaaaay too many nefarious intentions to officials. Help me out, which is it: was Tony Greene flashing his ego and trying to put his personal stamp on the game, or was he so timid and cowed by Cameron's history that he had to give that call to Duke? The reality is for the most part they're just trying to get by and sort through everything on the court. Tony Greene ended up with an incredibly tough call to make at full speed, and as I wrote in a different thread, he wasn't in perfect position either. Both guys--Tony Greene and Jim Boeheim--made snap decisions in the moment. That's it. I personally think college refs are ruining the game because they can't get out of the damn way. Yeah, I agree that play was likely something that had to be called one way or the other (although you certainly do see refs swallow their whistles with more contact late in games from time to time). Sure, it's a snap decision he has to make. But the NCAA (from everything we've heard from the outside) is trying to make the refs' jobs easier by making that type of call a block by default unless it's a really obvious charge, which it certainly wasn't. So all I'm saying is that there is an emotional element to it. No other call brings out so much animation from refs (and reaction from the crowd) than a charge call - like they think the fans pay to see them make these awesome, defiant calls. I definitely think ego plays a part in how some of these calls are made, whether it did on that play or not. That doesn't mean I think refs have nefarious intentions - they are simply human and have egos. And no other call allows a ref to make his impact felt more than a charge call, because it is by its very nature a defiant call that I would wager refs get wrong more than they get right per the rules.

agree with this. irrespective of last night, i would like to see more no-calls in general. too many plays where there's really no harm done with a little physical contact (some light hand-checking at mid-court comes to mind) are called fouls. honestly, unless a guy is truly impeded from making a move to the basket or is fouled while take a shot refs should let it go. these days everything is called though and it creates inconsistency with what to expect, slows down the flow of the game, makes it into a boring free throw contest and makes the stars sit on the bench instead of out on the court. i definitely agree too many refs don't realize nobody is there to see them.....

That's a problem with the NCAA rulebook and/or this year's Points of Emphasis then. I'll be curious if the NCAA (or some enterprising writer/blogger) takes a look after the season at the difference in scoring, fouls called, free throws, etc. under the new POE, and whether the new rules are revisited. But let's be clear: some officials may seem more flamboyant on the court, but it's not doing them any good. Officials are evaluated--for reg season and NCAA assignments, future jobs with conferences, ultimately their paychecks--based on how they manage games and adhere to the NCAA rulebook. It's not a celebrity culture, even though #WhereInTheWorldIsKarlHess is a thing and you can plug in anyone's referee stats on StatSheet. It's why Tony Greene was the one making the big call in a Duke-Syracuse game in the first place. And it raises an important point in the context of the NCAAs that I saw brought up on Twitter today. There's this idea that officials have relaxed a bit during conference season on the new Points of Emphasis. Be prepared during the NCAA Tournament to see those POE come back with a vengeance, because officials are going to get assignments/advanced into the tournament based on adhering to the rulebook. You know how we always seem kind of incredulous that Georgetown gets into foul trouble in NCAA losses? A ready explanation is the difference between the (perceived) looser officiating in the Old Big East and the NCAA standard.

What's scary is that we are 20th out of 345 in the country in most fouls per game. I cant even imagine what tighter called games would mean for us in the tourney I still think that is the most incredible stat, considering we have only lost 11 games. You have to figure there are at least 150 teams that have more losses than us, right? Just the volume of fouls those teams would have in end game situations...

I detest the fact that it's Monday, and Fox and the BE again scheduled no conference games. Big Monday spoiled me.

I would've loved for Cuse to make it three straight loses, but in the grand scheme of things it's probably better to have Maryland be denied even a whiff of an at-large bid. Also, I am enjoying the schadenfreude of all those Twerps fans coming so close... and having nothing to show for it but a misspelled poster. The Harvard of PG County indeed.

Don't jump too quick at that one. At either the Marquette or Seton Hall home game this year, we had a "sleeve tatoo" giveaway for students -- according to a flier on all the seats.

Tatoo is actually an accepted variant spelling of tattoo. Don't ask me how I know.
