To warm up for trip to NYC today, I caught Paul VI vs Gonzaga last night, and saw Reaves just dominate at both ends in little more than a half of playing time in "name your margin of victory" win. He had 17 points, about 5 assists, 3-4 blocks, maybe half dozen boards and numerous quick release fast breaks . But stats don't really tell the tale. He had 3 alley oop baskets on explosions to the rim, and woulda been 4 if he'd been able to complete the 270 spin move ("too much french pastry" to steal an old school line). The blocks were both down low quick off his feet leaps and one flying in from the wing eye-catcher. He started the game with a feathery 3 to open the scoring. And that was after he jumped center. I hadnt appreciated how long his arms are, which lets him play on the baseline on defense like he is a big man. Had nice chemistry with Derrickson too, on some feeds to one another in the half court set to try to get lay-ups. I think he'd like the JT IiII offense, and maybe the idea of playing with Derrickson will have some appeal (says the cock-eyed optimist). Anyone local should try to see this kid play (next Friday is a rematch with O'connell, and sunday at Dmatha). Seeing how/if he matches up with Trimble will be especially interesting/maybe telling... Thanks for the report JMW, My list above has not changed at all, T. Mann is the only guard I have above Reaves on my board.. Reaves is getting better & better and I'd expect his recruitment will take off this spring.. The staff is on an impressive amount of talented kids but in my opinion they have to know they can't slow play anyone..

Seems liek we are on a TON of two guards -- Trier, Reaves, Bacon, Mann, etc. How many of them qualify as combos/want to play the point?

The Washington Post beat writer (Brandon Parker) for high school hoops a couple days ago had a "mid-season report" on the "most impressive" local players he's seen in the past couple months. Full link at bottom; his short report on Reaves below... G/F Joshua Reaves, Paul VI, Jr. If the DMV had a “Most Improved Player Award,” I’d have to give it to Josh Reaves. His ascension from seldom-used reserve to the high-energy starting small forward for the Panthers has been fun to watch. He reminds me in some ways of the NBA’s Shawn Marion with his leaping ability and versatile play on both ends of the floor, serving as the sparkplug for Paul VI. His emergence has helped fill the offensive punch some thought the Panthers would lose with junior Frank Howard sidelined by a knee injury www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/recruiting-insider/wp/2014/01/31/all-met-boys-basketball-midseason-report/

Multiple reports that he was seen behind the bench at last night's game.

The reports are definitely accurate. I didn't notice him at the time, but on the video highlights last night saw he was there first row middle, sporting a Paul VI basketball sweatshirt.

Reaves with another game last night in WCAC semis that impressed with his athleticism -- three blocks on the perimeter/timed perfectly -- and his passing sense in particular (great, quick release on the fast break) and nice court vision for bullet passes fron the wing down low -- whipped one to Derrickson for a lay-up that was beautiful, and Derrickson returned the favor a few plays later for a dunk that was gorgeous. I can see, though, why there is hesitation about him, as I'm not quite sure where he plays in college. Ball handling isn't (yet) up to point gaurd; definitely not a "2" in shooting; too small to play the 3. Truth be told, right now he reminds one of Aaron Bowen (but with way better basketball instincts/passing ability). It does seem he could be the defensive specialist that you use to get in the grill of a big gaurd/small or even big forward, and just let what he does on offense work itself out... The summer will be big for him, in terms of seeing what kind of growth (skill and physically) he has -- imagine he'll be playing with the Team Takeover 17U EYBL team (along with Derrickson).

Reaves with 19 in signature performance in Paul VI's romp over Dematha last night for WCAC tourney title; article from Wash. Post this AM below. JTIII (in his Stonewalls' scarf again) and asst. Kevin Sutton courtside to see the show... Play of the night was first quarter when Dematha had a fast break down the wing and hoisted an alley oop to the basket -- which Josh leaped up, grabbed with one hand out of the air, and started the fastbreak the other way (basically epitomized his timing, leaping, passing skills all in one play...) He had a pair of early perimeter blocks that rather set the tone as well (Dematha hit all of one three on the night) and generally played lockdown D on the wing against DJ Harvey (very talented small forward for Dematha). A nice drive/circus lay-up early, follow-dunk after a nice feed he made to a teammate clanged off the rim, Markel-esque teardrop floater in the lane and an alley-oop dunk to put the exclamation point on the win late among the highlights. Numerous fast break outlets to boot. I fear our game and his will not match up well (the kid REALLY loves the running/fastbreak game), but we'd be fools not to stay on him like wet on water. Paul VI plays tonight (Wednesday) I think 7pm at home against Potomoc in quarters of the VISAA tourney, in case anyone wanted to see the show (including Marcus of course) for themselves. Potomac will get crushed (they're tiny and its pressure D/ability to hit free throws which got them handily past a gassed/no depth Episcopal last night will be no match for Paul VI), but semis are in Petersburg VA so this will be last chance locally I think to see them... P.S. All WCAC team is now out. Reaves, Derrickon and Tre Campebell (St. John's) all on the rather bloated ten player first team; O'Connell's Melo Trimble Player of the Year. Bryant Crawford/G at Gonzaga that we have offered and who is the subect to some debate on this site, named third team. Link to those teams below as well. www.washingtonpost.com/sports/highschools/paul-vi-beats-dematha-behind-to-win-second-wcac-boys-basketball-title-in-three-seasons/2014/02/25/d46283d2-9e4e-11e3-9ba6-800d1192d08b_story.htmlwww.dcsportsfan.com/posts/331022-wcac-basketball-all-conference/

Are we talking about the Potomac team that Big Q plays on with Dion Wiley and Randall Broadie?

Sorry, no (so many "Potomac"s in this area). They'll play The Potomac School of McLean (plays in the MAC), whose biggest kid is 6'4" (if that). Lost to Maret in the MAC semi's on Saturday... Sure WISH (along with you I know) that it was Big Q's Potomac though, in light of his leaving Paul VI to go to Potomac earlier this year...

Will be attending his 4th game tmrw. This is the type of high level athlete that could mesh well with some of the other studs we have coming in.

Just to confirm, Josh indeed was behind the Hoya bench last night to see us beat Creighton, as were Marcus Derrickson and Tre Campell. Others on our radar (e.g. Bryant Crawford) may have been as well, but those three I recognized for certain. To say this was a great game for recruits to see -- esepically the emotion Markel showed for his love of having been able to play here as a local kid -- rather understates things...

Lets just take Trier and Reaves. Both seem like good kids that want to be here. Trier can probably split time between the 1-2 and Reaves can split between the 2-3.
I havent heard much about Bacon recently except for him transferring HS.
Crawford is the tough one. If he pops first, obviously take him, but it seems like his recruitment is going to be drawn out with Indiana and others in the mix. He would be a nice addition too but hard to know where he fits with Campbell being a year above him. With DSR leaving in '16, maybe some minutes open up. A lot would depend on whether Peak is the type of guy that turns out to be a 2 year player or a 4 year player. If he leaves you can slot a couple players up to take minutes between the 2 and 3 positions. But, I really think there's only room for 2 guards among the '15 scholarships if we're being realistic. Who we end up with might just depend on the timing for who wants to pop when....
