Ewing won the Naismith Award. As someone explained to me previously, there are 3-4 national player of the year awards. The Wooden Award is just the one that ESPN has partnered with.

I haven't watched all of IU's games but my understanding is that's mostly what he does offensively. He's obviously not the focal point of what his team does offensively. To his credit he's a very good defender and exciting player to watch. He's just not what i typically would consider a national POY. |

On the other hand, since he "shoots" so many layups and dunks, his shooting percentage is ridiculous for a guard, at 61%. The three threes he took and missed against Michigan yesterday dropped his three-point percentage from 53% to 49%. Really, it's a race between a guy in Porter who does an amazing array of things well, and another in Oladipo who does only a couple of things, but each amazingly well. And one of the things Oladipo really excels at is not doing things he can't do amazingly well. In that regard, he's not a typical player-of-the-year candidate, because it's the other great players around him that gives him the luxury of playing his game. You left out Burke, who is probably going to be the one who gets it. I guess I can't get over my pro-Hoya bias, but I just can't see how Otto is not the best choice. But I don't think he is going to get it. |

Part of the problem with Player of the Year is that it will be hard to gain momentum if you're not hailed as one of the frontrunners all year. While Porter has gotten plenty of press recently, he still hasn't had nearly the buzz of everybody else.
A Big East run plus an NCAA run would raise Porter's profile even more, and could help, but I think it will still be tough for him to win the national awards. The same would also improve his draft stock - if he does go into the draft, I want him to go as high as possible.

You left out Burke, who is probably going to be the one who gets it. I agree he probably gets it. But Burke is the one guy I don't understand how he fits. Is he a great player? Sure, definitely. But he is the point guard, and leader, for a team that has lost almost every game against a top team that it has played this year. The exception is a ONE point victory at home against Michigan St. Michigan does not deliver in the biggest games. That has to be an issue for Burke. In the last, and most important of those games, the guy misses TWO 1 and 1's to salt the game away. Not one, a mistake. But TWO! A full choke job. And that's the player of the year? |
