Amazing that we've never had a Wooden Award winner.

Amazing that we've never had a Wooden Award winner. Suprised that Patrick Ewing did not win 1 in 4 years at the Hilltop

Ewing won the Naismith Award. As someone explained to me previously, there are 3-4 national player of the year awards. The Wooden Award is just the one that ESPN has partnered with.

Wow! We finally get some love from ESPN Uh, not really: Editor's Note: Over the next three days, we’ll be making the case for each of the top five finalists for national player of the year. Coming Tuesday: Gonzaga’s Kelly Olynyk and Creighton’s Doug McDermott: Wednesday: Indiana’s Victor Oladipo and Michigan’s Trey Burke.

Didn't know this nugget: "When Porter grabs at least seven rebounds, Georgetown is 17-0 this season. "
Go get'em, Otto!

Katz picks Oladipo. For now. QUOTE:Well, I waited until the final day before making my decision on how I'll vote on the Wooden Award final five and in our ESPN.com straw poll.
Victor Oladipo's 14 points and 13 rebounds in a winning effort for Indiana at Michigan on Sunday in Ann Arbor pushed him over Michigan's Trey Burke and Creighton's Doug McDermott. Oladipo made the winning plays when the games mattered most for a team that has a chance to be the No. 1 overall seed and won the toughest conference in the country.
Victor Oladipo has been the best player on the team that won the top conference.
So here is my ballot:
1. Victor Oladipo, Indiana 2. Trey Burke, Michigan 3. Doug McDermott, Creighton 4. Otto Porter Jr., Georgetown 5. Kelly Olynyk, Gonzaga

Not sure if he made a shot outside of 4 feet all night. I haven't watched all of IU's games but my understanding is that's mostly what he does offensively. He's obviously not the focal point of what his team does offensively. To his credit he's a very good defender and exciting player to watch. He's just not what i typically would consider a national POY.

He jumps out of the gym, gives it his all on every possession and has 2-3 "wow" plays per game. but the dude is averaging 13.7 ppg and 6.2 rpg. Obviously coming from JTIII's program, I know not to inflate the importance of stats, but I just do not understand the oladipo NPOY talk. I really don't. By all accounts an excellent kid and a diehard competitor who has a lot of raw talent, but NPOY? Come on. Just stop. Burke and Porter are 1a and 1b because they are keyed on EVERY SINGLE POSSESSION.

On the other hand, since he "shoots" so many layups and dunks, his shooting percentage is ridiculous for a guard, at 61%. The three threes he took and missed against Michigan yesterday dropped his three-point percentage from 53% to 49%. Really, it's a race between a guy in Porter who does an amazing array of things well, and another in Oladipo who does only a couple of things, but each amazingly well. And one of the things Oladipo really excels at is not doing things he can't do amazingly well. In that regard, he's not a typical player-of-the-year candidate, because it's the other great players around him that gives him the luxury of playing his game. You left out Burke, who is probably going to be the one who gets it. I guess I can't get over my pro-Hoya bias, but I just can't see how Otto is not the best choice. But I don't think he is going to get it.

Part of the problem with Player of the Year is that it will be hard to gain momentum if you're not hailed as one of the frontrunners all year. While Porter has gotten plenty of press recently, he still hasn't had nearly the buzz of everybody else.
A Big East run plus an NCAA run would raise Porter's profile even more, and could help, but I think it will still be tough for him to win the national awards. The same would also improve his draft stock - if he does go into the draft, I want him to go as high as possible.

You left out Burke, who is probably going to be the one who gets it. I agree he probably gets it. But Burke is the one guy I don't understand how he fits. Is he a great player? Sure, definitely. But he is the point guard, and leader, for a team that has lost almost every game against a top team that it has played this year. The exception is a ONE point victory at home against Michigan St. Michigan does not deliver in the biggest games. That has to be an issue for Burke. In the last, and most important of those games, the guy misses TWO 1 and 1's to salt the game away. Not one, a mistake. But TWO! A full choke job. And that's the player of the year?
