Count me among those who find Bilas to be an entertaining and insightful color commentator.
Rightly or wrongly, he's entitled to his opinions -- it's clearly what he's paid to provide. Don't see how his objection to VCU being added to the tournament can be viewed as unprofessional. That's what Selection Sunday is all about -- the commentators expressing their opinions on the tournament field. No one person has an exclusive, 100% correct perspective on what teams should be included.

It depends on whether the coaches are willing to stipulate to instructing their players to take 15-20 shot fakes per game.

Isn't Bob Knight going to be available? Hopefully not. I can't take anymore whining about the three point line.

John Saunders would be my first choice PBP target. He's terrific and a Georgetown fan to boot.
Really hoping Fox does a better job of staffing our games with legit on-air talent than NBC Sports Network did with that carrier game. Those guys were terrible.

The fact that Bilas thought VCU shouldn't be in the tournament means nothing. My friend, who follows the seeding really closely, also thought VCU shouldn't have made it that year. Sure, they beat us and they made a Final Four run, but that doesn't mean there were not more deserving teams that year.
I like that Bilas tends not to favor either team (at least not as much as other guys, like the Connecticut broadcast team), and he does have some good insights. Plus, he makes fun of Sean McDonough and Syracuse, which is always a positive thing.
If Fox Sports wants to make their name in college basketball, they will probably put the time and investment into hiring some new talent. They won't get someone like Bilas (who is already part of the top broadcast team at ESPN, plus he has his ACC roots), but that doesn't mean they won't get a big name, and possibly get Gus Johnson involved at appropriate times (like the Big East tournament).
Fox Sports has generally done a pretty good job with baseball and football, so I am somewhat optimistic.
How about the bigger issue nobody is talking about - does Fox Sports have any sort of online streaming capabilities like ESPN3? While some of our less important games will inevitably end up on ESPN3 anyway (especially in the OOC season), we are all used to having access to nearly every game available online. For the folks in DC and NY, there is MASN and Sports NY. Will any games not available on Fox Sports proper be available online?
It seems that Fox Sports will probably air a lot of the games, but I doubt all of the games will be on the national network. You need to have a place to stick the Seton Hall-DePaul specials.

I doubt more than 10-12 games will be on Fox. Most everything will be on Fox Sports 1 or 2. I was actually referencing Fox Sports 1 or whatever the new cable network is called. Will each and every conference game be on that network? I find that hard to believe, but if they need the inventory of programming, perhaps they will. If not, then online options or other options are important. I still imagine that Fox Sports will not carry many of the out of conference games, especially those with really bad teams.

This whole experiment was Fox's idea, not Gus Johnson's. They needed to find something for him to do--sixth-tier NFL games and Iowa-Northwestern games on BTN weren't really helping them get their money's worth. There's no reason to attack him for attempting to take on an enormous task for which he will be ridiculed for some time (and in some corners forever) for doing what his bosses asked him to do. The initial reviews of his debut put him in the B-/C+ range, which I think is pretty good given that he knew nothing about soccer 3 months ago. Given that Fox's World Cup isn't for five more years, he'll have lots of time to improve, and won't be so insecure about showing that he'd prepared hard for the gig. Now maybe from here the feedback will be so negative that they'll switch gears and bring him back to do their new signature hoops league, or maybe after this initial soccer run they can adjust his soccer schedule enough to allow him to do hoops next fall. But right now, Fox is devoted to going all in with him on soccer (and he was good enough the other day to justify continuing the experiment) so I think we're looking at other options. I just don't like it. It ruins the game for me to hear him speak. As a soccer fan you want the authentic thing. Not some guy who just picked up the game 2 years ago and knows less about the game than the viewer does. It would be like having a British guy who just started watching basketball a couple years ago announcing NBA or Hoyas games. It just wouldn't fly with the basketball fanbase. (In British accent) "That's a foul!" "Hoop and the Harm!" It would just be silly. I know less than nothing about soccer, but I'd like Fox to hire this guy to call some Hoyas games...

Could we pluck Laphonso Ellis somehow? He's growing on me. I kind of like him. I try to keep my posts positive, but I can't resist here ... I thought Laphonso was absolutely horrible calling the UConn game. His insight was laughable and he clearly favored UConn to the point of being obnoxious. Sorry, but my two cents. Wrong
