Unlucky? Free throws and rebounds make luck. Refs may make or break those, but having a serviceable center goes a long way.

Had no problems with Jabril taking that shot...none....he was wide open, and that was the best look we were going to get with seven seconds remaining...also he's a tough player...tough players make those shots...remember Jessie Sapp against West Virginia? Agree with this. Credit to Otto to find Jabril recognizing he had a much tougher chance with 2-3 defenders on him. Also credit to Otto on finding Whit after his drive to the hoop for the 3-ball attempt, too bad GWhitt couldn't get that 3rd FT down.

Somebody outside of the 5 that played down the stretch has to become a productive part of this team. 2 players doing so would be great, but I'll just take one right now. Agreed Allen... Unfortunately it doesn't appear anyone will get the chance besides Hopkins & DSR. I really thought DSR would be much better than this, he's a non factor out there

DSR would be the obvious candidate since he's usually the first or second player off the bench, but he's been almost invisible on the floor for over a month. I'd give Bowen a look. He can't possibly be that much worse of a shooter than the guys we're putting out there and he's not shy about attacking the basket.

Tough loss that easily could have been a win. Agree with the above post that we need at least one guy beyond the final 5 today to step up and be solid for us. Hopkins was terrible today and DSR did nothing off the bench. Despite Moses not being the facilitator JTIII may want in there, I would have rather had him in there than Hopkins today.....at least for a stretch. While he is not a big play maker, he doesn't mess up too much on offense and he would have been a good matchup for Gardner. Need to beat Pitt.....can't start the season 0-2. Hope the guys learn something from this one, make the necessary adjustments and keep getting better.

DSR is not good enough for this level...at least not right now he isn't...he's an unathletic tweener...yes he can shoot...problem is, he can't get his shot off

Pitt lost to Rutgers. They're gonna be hungry. We lost to Marquette. We're going to be hungry. Oh and the only place more negative than Hoyatalk right now is Pitt's board: pittsburgh.rivals.com/forum.asp?fid=538

I too believe that in the circumstances at the time, you cannot blame Jabril for taking that shot. My point is that of the players on the floor at the time he is no better than the 4th option. Porter, Whittington and Starks would all have been preferable. What Jabril brings to this team is great energy and toughness. He still needs to work on his shot though. The offense is just not clicking yet and other teams are dictating our offense by their defense. I believe the problem is in the middle. Without an offensive threat in the post other teams can play further out and shut down the open looks. I like the fact that Hopkins has confidence but his skills clearly do not yet warrant the playing time. The drop off to Moses must be enormous.

Good to see that John Cahill is in mid season form. I want two typewritten pages from Mr. Cahill on my desk by tomorrow at noon explaining the rule (with appropriate citations) that allows Buzz Williams to be 3 feet out on the floor and set a moving pick on Markel Starks and get away with it. Fortunately I had a couple of hockey games to attend that prevented watching most of the game but I caught that gem on my cellphone live.

Jabril had a great look. Absolutely has to take that shot. Is the first or second option given the choice? No. But, in that situation, that's his shot to take. And it wasn't dictated by the defense. Otto found him wide open on the perimeter.
I agree that Hopkins was bad. Bad enough to give Moses some time just to give Nate a break. He was getting assaulted all game with no calls whatsoever. The grabbing, pushing, over the backs.... it was brutal. Nate has to be absolutely drained after that game.
DSR needs to do nothing but fighting through screens set by Moses in practice while trying to follow Markel. His effort in "fighting through screens" was, to be kind, really bad.
I agree 100% with idhoya on Otto and Greg being more aggressive. Whitt especially today.

Jabril's 35% from 3 isn't horrid; Mikael - just try to dunk every play until you can finish the bunnies; why not TRY to put other players in for spot duty; IS GU a great shooting team as JTIII says? prolly, but perhaps some of it is on the bench...
Quote from JTIII on FB:
John Thompson III A clear reminder not to underestimate any team in the Big East, ranked or not. We will grow from this. We are Georgetown Unlike · · 181 · about an hour ago ·
Not sure he was talking about the team because I didn't sense they underestimated MU at all.

I think we were lucky to be close at the end. No one seems to want to credit Marquette's defense but I thought they were terrific, at least as good as we were. The failure to call the fake FT is annoying, but otherwise I thought the calls and no-calls went both ways. We were playing very physically and seldom got called for it; a lot of refs would have looked the other way (wrongly) on Greg's attempted 3. Marquette made the shots they needed to make down the stretch and we didn't.
I think Mikael is limited as a player but I also suspect he is attempting those shots because that's what JT3 has been coaching him to do. I'm ambivalent on whether we're better when he sits. Our lack of size creates problems, and I agree with JT3's apparent judgment that Moses is not the answer. Every time I see him on the court he looks athletically awkward. That disappoints me because I honestly thought he would be farther along by now. But despite his strength he may be just too limited athletically.
Maybe our lack of depth at the 4 and 5 is because (as it turned out) we wasted a roster spot and recruiting energy on Adams? Surely the school could find a way to continue his scholarship if he wants, but it's all too obvious he doesn't have a basketball future at Georgetown.
I agree with everyone else that Markel was very good today. Honestly, he's the only Hoya I can say that about.
Teams can continue to focus their D on Otto because it's very dicey whether someone else will be able to step up or not. IMO, we lost our two most important players from last year and a third guy that would have been just as important or moreso if he hadn't played half the season with a broken freaking foot. Our returning veterans other than Mikael - Nate, Markel, Greg and especially Otto - all improved, I think, but none made the quantum leap that Henry did last year. Perhaps more importantly, none of the new guys appears genuinely ready for BE play - they certainly aren't as good as last year's new guys. So we probably suffered a net loss in talent and it may be unrealistic to expect a top-10 or -15 season out of this team.
The upside is that all we need to beat almost anyone on a given night is for someone to get hot. We just can't count on it.

Time will tell. Based on JTIII's own words I'm not sure all of that is accurate, but again. Time will tell
